My only Cub

First off, welcome to the forum! Second, what you have there is a Garden Tractor, not a lawn tractor. I'm sure a mod will be along shortly to move this to the appropriate section.
Third, what you really have there is the potential for a great machine. If the hours are actually 444 (which is near impossible to tell since the hour meters can roll over forever), you got a rare bird. Either way, though, that could be turned into a nice worker. Do a search of the site and you'll find loads of info on the Quietline Series. The biggest thing you're going to run into is the motor mount bolt rubber absorbers (called ISO's, makes looking them up easier) are probably shot. You can replace with stock new from Cub Cadet or replace them with solid mounts sold here on the site. Have you tried firing it up yet? I'm sure it's going to need a carb rebuild and some fresh oil/trans fluid. Good luck with whatever you end up doing! :beerchug: |
Welcome to OCC!!!! Nice find in the weeds...as said with a bit of work it will be a good strong worker for years to come!!!

Welcome to OCC!! :Welcome2:

from my understanding the only thing it was used for was to mow the lawn. so i believe the 444 is correct, assuming it rolls over at 1000 hours. i can grab the engine and move it wherever i want so i know the motor mounts are shot, and the bolts are probably gone. it was parked due to a "major rod knock" that i believe is due to the mounts failing. it will be a while before i try to start it.

Those hour meters roll over at 600 hours.
:Welcome2: |
Man, do I love the Quiet Line series garden tractor. Even when it needs a little work they still always catch my eye! Nice ride you have there, bud. I have the 1250 that I am adding Hydraulic lift too.

Man, I've been looking out in the weeds for years, and all I find is junk:bash2: You got the makings of a good tractor, if.......you want to put the time and money into it.
Congrats on a good find, and welcome to OCC:beerchug: |
I have a 1975 1450 that I bought the beginning of the year and got running. It looked in worse shape than yours.
These are great tractors worth fixing. That one looks complete. I would go through it and see what it needs. What is your serial number? I am curious to see how close it is to mine. The nice thing about the early QL tractors is they have the cast iron lower grill. My 1000(August 1977) has a cast aluminum lower grill. |

the 1450 I got for $150 with snow blower I am in south center Michigan

A 1450 was my first Cub Cadet and I love it. Plenty of power for the 50" deck and good handling all around tractor. Some elbow grease and a few dollars and you'll have a good machine.

Or if you want to part it out i would buy the rearend pump, lines lift cylinder spool valve and lever??? Or how much would you want for the whole thing, IF you decided to part with it???

according to some charts ive seen it puts it at a build date somewhere around July of '75. |

as for selling it, thats the overall plan as of now. i want to give it a chance to live again before i cut it apart though. as for pricing i havent a clue what they are worth, im a gravely guy, i know gravely prices. i might get it running and use it as a tractor show runner being a quiet line it may be quieter than a gravely and not disturb as many kids:biggrin2::BlahBlah: |

can these be used as ISO mounts? they are the same as the MOOG ones ive seen being used in place of the factory. and they are quite a bit cheaper than factory too. i dont want to put a lot of money into it until i know it runs, and i dont want to destroy anything because the engines loose. |

im going to see if this tractor will start here soon. i want to know if it will run before i put too much into it. now, some if not all of the engine mount bolts are gone, you can slide the engine around with no effort. is there a grounding cable for the engine, or does it use these bolts as an engine ground? i had an old rubber mounted honda that had a grounding cable that rusted off and it grounded through the throttle cable and welded it together on the next hit of the key. i dont want that issue. the oil is clean and full. ive got to see if its got compression. looking in the spark plug hole i know the valves move. it was dark in there so i didnt see the piston, but i got my trusty flashlight some new batteries. ill run it with some carb/choke cleaner so i dont have to pull the carb and clean it to run. ill do that when i know it runs. if i get it running i may decide to keep it, see if it fights with my gravelys. so far it has one flat tire, the gravely might cause more with some yellow moving in...:bash:

If you want to sell it, ask us what it's worth and mark it for sale. Don't be a C-list jerk just trying to see what kind of offer you can get. You want to sell it to the highest bidder, but it on E-Bay. |
Exactly what I was thinking. I'm all up for giving advice to someone that wants to get something running to use it but I draw the line at giving free advice to a flipper.

my apologies to all ive offended. my daughter has since taken a shine to the tractor, so it will probably become the runaround vehicle at the tractor shows. im in at least 3 per year with the gravely. i was trying to judge interest in the tractor and had a sale lined up, but he backed out. im going to have my daughter help me fix it up and install a secondary seat on it, or build a mini hay wagon and use it to play with. i love seeing my 6 year old get excited about a tractor, shes not into the 2 wheels because "its not a tractor if you have to walk behind it." again im sorry guys, your not giving free advise to a flipper, your helping a guy who was in a tight spot when he got a good deal on a tractor. wifes working as of today, so i dont need the money as much as a bonding experience with my little one.:beerchug:

Good job taking it off craigs list. You have a good tractor and it all there. I don't think it's in bad shape at all. Always a good idea to spend some time with the kids and why not expand your collection? Gravelys are cool (cue the CAD pics) but great idea to give the cubs a try, you'll be hooked in no time.
PS your 1450 would be a great find around me condition wise and it sounds like you got it cheap :beerchug: |

update time... started pulling the engine panels off before i attempt to start it. i filled a grocery bag with the mouse nest i took out of the flywheel and muffler housings. very little rust. everything looks good now. hooked a battery up to it and turned the key to on. no smoke, and the hour meter turns. is the white arm supposed to move the whole time the battery is hooked up, regardless of key position? turned the key to get a no fuel crank to see how the ignition system works and BANG!!! sounded like someone hit the side of the block with a hammer. i thought the worst until i looked into it further. the starter magnets are loose of the housing and broke. so the starter would start to turn and jam the stater into the rotor. fun fun. its two big pieces so im going to see if i can epoxy the pieces back into place, i dont want to buy a $65 dollar starter to see if the engines any good.:bash2:
|
The white hand is the second hand like a clock, so yes it'll always move

It should only finish its cycle and quit moving in a few seconds.
|
ok, ill fool with it tomorrow. i had to glue the starter magnets back on and we try to start it tomorrow.:beer2:
|
some success today, got the magnet epoxied back in place, and it turns the engine over. never done that before, but if it gets me closer to show time without spending money im happy.:biggrin2:
|
cranks over real nice now ive got to diagnose the next issue, whatever that may be. ill clean and set the points, then try for spark. the carb is super clean too! pics next time i can get home during daylight hours!

big update tonight fellas! ill start from the beginning... when i got the tractor the PO which was also the original owner said that it developed a "violent rod knock" and major hard starting back in 1994. in 1999 the knock was so bad that he parked the tractor at the edge of the swamp and never looked back. fast forward 15 years i was the first to ask about it, so i was the winner and got to drag it home. i did little petty stuff with it here and there, but it mostly took up space on my trailer. tonight i decided to roll it into the shop to make or break its future. so remember, this a 39 year old tractor left untouched for a decade and a half to rot away in the swamp over a dead engine. tonight was an ok night. figured first i would deal with the loose engine. everyone says the rubber mounts give out and makes a loose engine. so i looked underneath. well ill be, all the rubber mounts are there and boy, they look good. engine still rocks like a drunken college kid. i looked some more, and ALL 4 engine mounting bolts were GONE! luckily i had 4 bolts that matched in my bolt bin. next problem. no spark, 12 volts into the coil, 12 volts out, still no spark. little sand paper later and we have a little blue lightning storm as my daughter calls it. cool, repaired starter, mounted engine, ignition, compression, next we need fuel. poured some in the tank, discovered it has a fuel shut off, turn the key and.... nothing, just cranks. damnation's. fiddle with the choke, fiddle with the points, fiddle with the plug, fiddle with the radio. try the key again... purrs like a kitten with a hair ball, but shes alive!!! a little smoke later and some sea foam and the hair ball is gone. man does this thing run nice! dosnt skip a beat, NO KNOCKS!!! what the PO was calling a developing knock becoming a violent knock was the engine coming unbolted from the cradle! i havent tried the hydro yet, i wasnt in the position to pull it off the trailer, but to bring the swamp thing back to life was good enough for tonight for sure! sorry for the long post, but i wanted you guys to live the moment with me.:beer2:
|
So the "swamp monster" is alive :beerchug:
Congrats on getting it running Jeff |
You'd think you'd notice the engine dancing around independent of the rest of the machine....:bigthink: great that it's running again.
