86 taillights

What's everyone use for taillights on 1x8/9 & QL tractors? I was thinking 82 series tails or truck lite model 18s, but I didn't realize I'd have to drill through the fender. Is there anything low profile that's a flush mount ? I'm just concerned about my fenders rusting if I drill them. Anybody have a good source for a headlight switch? Thanks

If you drill a hole just put a little grease or never seize on the bare metal and the will keep it from rusting. I used lights from tractor supply for mine and they look great and I think there brighter than the headlights.

I used LEDs from Grote on mine, lined up exactly with existing mounting holes but had to drill the center hole to clear the raised backside, they are Grote #47732.

I looked at the 47732s too, are they bright? How thick is the assy, could it get knocked off easily? Or broken?

They are plenty bright, and are not much thicker than the OE reflector. Very low amp draw.

I use these from Harbor Freight. The price is right and no need to drill any additional holes. I have also seen the lens caps at various tractor shows in purple, green, pink, blue, etc. if you want a more retro '60's look.

My 86 (all original) doesn't have rear lights, just reflectors. It's yours to do with as you please but the 86 had limited production so not many of them in original condition out here. Guess there might be one less soon?

If it came with out headlights it would have reflectors, If it had headlights it would have taillights.

I found these from a member here on the forum. Got them from eBay.

TS price is for 1. HF price is for 2. I actually like the Blazer light/ reflector better. I think the oval shape looks better. 1 bulb tho vs 2 bulbs.

That's understandable, I got factory lights and I wired them myself without splicing anything into the factory harness. I'd like flush mount and low profile tails but doesn't seem to be possible. Secondly I really don't want to saw a 1-5/8 hole in the fender.

Actually I kind of like the idea of the armored lights in the one picture above. I kind of wish there was someplace I could go that I could browse a bunch of different lights, like a heavy truck center, but there isn't anything like that close.

Finally, I saved this 86. Pretty sure it would have been a) scrapped or b) chopped up into a puller if I didn't get it. I rebuilt the engine, fixed the steering, I'm adding the lights so I can plow snow with it and I just picked up and installed a new 6 pad seat for it today. I'm kind of attached to it so I want to set it up so I can use it.

Harbor Freights are the ones I used.

64fleetside 10-30-2014 10:20 AM

Biggest reason I went with the Grote LEDs was the flush mount, anything else is too easy to knock off-I got a 14 y/o boy that's kinda rough on stuff ya know....

IHCadetCollector 10-30-2014 11:01 AM

Drill the holes and paint them. Then it won't rust.

OldSkull 10-31-2014 12:43 AM

I already found the perfect fit replacement for really cheap and they work so well I can even use the base with OEM 378 Bargman lens! here the thread...

Well, stopped at Napa the other night and picked up the LED version of the Tractor Supply/Harbor Freight lights shown above, and looked at them against the fender, and I didn't care for the fit. Took them back this morning and browsed Napa's light catalog, I really like the Truck Lite model 18 LED's but I'd have to drill a big hole in the fender for clearance. I ended up buying 2 of the Peterson marker lamps on ebay (I got them real cheap). I know they aren't flush mount but hopefully they fit nice without needing any holes added. I'm curious how this lamp is assembled as well, maybe I could put some reflective tape under the red lamp (I don't know if that would be effective or not?) Anyway hopefully I'll have them midweek next week and I can get them on & get some pics up.
