2072 getting gas in oil

Hey guys,
My 2072 is getting gas in the oil and when I removed the air cleaner I noticed oil on top of the carb. What's That about? Is it a bad fuel pump or bad needle and seat in the carb? Thanks.

Shrewcub 10-21-2014 04:18 PM

Sounds like it is time for a new fuel pump and maybe a breather valve too.

j4c11 10-21-2014 04:26 PM

Check the carb, I had the same issue and the carb I had just rebuilt 4 months ago was full of brown gel-like beads of crud from moisture in the fuel. But it could also be the needle valve is not sealing. If that's not it maybe the fuel pump.

cubcadet 10-21-2014 04:30 PM

Ok, I figure the same thing, thanks guys.

cubcadet 10-22-2014 02:41 PM

Am I better to get a carb off a kt17 or rebuild this one? It's a walbro.

ACecil 10-22-2014 02:57 PM

Nick, you can also put a #26 carb on it.

:IH Trusted Hand: I second that motion!

jimbob200521 10-22-2014 04:58 PM

I think the consensus is; ditch the Walbro. :beerchug:

Probably have to swap the throttle shafts.

Ok thanks.

cubcadet 10-22-2014 07:08 PM

On guys,
I changed the needle in the carb and changed the oil, got to replace a fuel line, but let's see what happens.

darkminion_17 10-22-2014 09:42 PM

Keep us posted on your progress.

Not yet sam, I will be because it is still mixing.:bash2:

Oak 10-23-2014 06:42 PM

Nick bypass the pump for now and see what happens.

Thanks Todd, Sam told me the same thing , will do.:beer2:

cubcadet 11-06-2014 06:43 AM

Hey guys,
We got the new fuel pump installed, also installed new intake manifold gaskets, and we put the carb back on, the oil looks good and I started it up and let it run then shut it off and checked it and it still looked good, hopefully the problem is fixed.

Sam Mac 11-06-2014 07:28 AM

Sounds good. I'd run it for a while and do an oil and filter change just to be sure you got all the gas out of it. :beerchug:

the oil was changed already before gas got in and the filter is brand new.

Oak 11-06-2014 07:40 AM

Nick, did you change the filter and oil after you put the new pump on and test ran it?

No, this is the 3rd time we have changed the oil, the filter is new which we put on after we bought the tractor. We did not change it again because the oil is clean and does not look over filled or smell of gas.

Sam Mac 11-06-2014 08:50 AM

Just my 2 cents, but an oil filter and a couple quarts of oil are cheap compared to the cost of a Mag. Your $$$ your tractor do as you wish. :beatdeadhorse:

I totally agree with Sam, Nick. Easier/cheaper to change oil and filter rather than rebuild or repower.....................:bigthink:

darkminion_17 11-06-2014 01:47 PM

What they said!!!

cubcadet 11-06-2014 03:11 PM

Ok guys I get it, I just drained it out and am flushing it out, will refill it and then see what happens.

darkminion_17 11-06-2014 03:30 PM

Don't forget to change the filter, make sure all the oil is out by looking in the drain hole NYUCK NYUCK

Glad to hear you are doing it right. Something for you to remember as you grow older "You can always afford to do it right the second time" I was taught that many years ago. :beerchug:

Thanks Sam, I agree.:beerchug: and it's all done and seems to be ok, I hope.

Better to be taught that lesson that learn it the hard way :bash:

Hey guys, I'm having the EXACT same problem! Oil smells like gas and the top of the carb/bottom of the air filter is covered in oil. I priced a fuel pump at $80 at my local cub dealer... Runs bad and hard to start also... New fuel pump or bypass and what else?

Sam Mac 12-23-2014 12:44 PM

I'd bypass the pump to test that it is in fact the pump and not the carb. Drain the oil refill and replace the oil filter.

Just Googled the Kohler part number for the pump (52-559-03-S) they are priced all over the place looks like from $35.00 and up.

Sam, when I do get it running, a very small amount of oil will come up through the small tube that is under the air filter... Breather tube?

I think you will get that if the oil level is too high, which, if you got gas leaking into the oil, it's going to be higher than normal because of the gas.

Yes, that is the breather tube. When the oil gets thin with fuel it will puke more oil. Get the problem fixed first, then see how it acts. It's normal for a small amount of oil to come into the housing from the tube, but minimal.

IliketheRedcubs 12-23-2014 03:06 PM

Thank you all for your prompt replies! Thanks Johnathon, I really appreciate your reply... BTW, I really enjoy some of your replies to the knowledge challenged!!

Sam Mac 12-23-2014 03:15 PM

What ever you do, don't continue to run it with gas diluted oil or it will go bang and you'll join the see through block club. :beerchug:

IliketheRedcubs 12-23-2014 04:21 PM

Yeah, the 2072 was taking a break from lawn mowing duties and the other day I wanted to get her out to stretch her legs... She really didn't want to! :BB&YS: She's in the shop now with the hood up and ready to get a fuel pump bypass. Just have to let my back rest a day or two :bash2: so I can make the diagnosis! :biggrin2: :beerchug:
