My 147 (pic heavy)

About 3 years ago I got the itch for a small end loader and started searching around the internet to see what my options were. Buying a new CUT tractor was out of the question. Even used ones cost too much and would be bigger than I need. Then I found the YouTube video of a 149 with a loader & backhoe and the itch turned into a “must have”. With a little more research I narrowed it down to using a 127 or 147.

Shortly thereafter this 147 came up for sale on craigslist. After making a 1-1/2 hour drive I was somewhat disappointed that the description didn’t match the reality. It had been sitting outside uncovered for around 15 years, long enough for two 3” trees to grow up between the frame and foot rest. Ugh! I was about to walk away when I decided to reach down and try to turn the engine over with the starter pulley. The engine was free and I could feel some compression. It came with a snow blower, a rototiller with both extensions and a mower deck. I figured if nothing else it would be a good parts tractor if I found something else in better shape.

After giving it the usual maintenance she fired right up and has been running great since. It has a fairly good oil leak but that will be taken care of when I get around to going through the engine.

All I have are before and photos. The paint on the loader, hood, dash and fender pan were done right but the rest is a quickie job.

Video coming soon.

Really Nice!

No way that is the same tractor, that is phenomenal work. What made you lock on to a 127/147?

TheSaturnV 09-29-2014 10:43 AM

Thing of beauty. That is one tough looking Sub-CUT, well done. The custom spindles look strong, tell us more about the PTO.

:beerchug:

DoubleO7 09-29-2014 11:15 AM

Impressive all around good job.
Well worth the effort I bet.

Second on pto/pump details.

I decided on using a narrow frame partly for the looks and partly for it having a frame that runs straight through without the bump out that the wide frames have. And the 127 or 147 because of the hydro and bigger motor, not knowing exactly how much power would be needed.

:beerchug:

The spindles are a bit overkill. They made with 3/8" steel and 3,500lb trailer spindles.

The pump is a Northern tool .388" unit, http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...9706_200329706. One thing I liked about it is that it can be used in either direction and with a pulley if needed.

Originally I was going to run it off the back of the motor but saw a post somewhere of someone running theirs off the back of the hydro. It's a close fit. I had to rotate the upper lift bracket and cut out a little for clearance.

Very nice machine!

cadzag72 09-29-2014 02:26 PM

Did you build it off plans? It certainly looks great! I really like that pump idea, I may try that on one of my 125s for a hydraulic lift setup. I have one with the factory auxiliary pump, but I could transfer that to my 72... :bigthink:

Not really, I designed it in Sketchup using various design ideas from photos on the internet. Since it was a few years in the planning stage I was able to tweak a lot of it before starting to build.

Over the weekend I was able to get the foot control made up. It is linked to the bottom of the hand control with a cross shaft running just below the filter.

Here's a video of it doing its main purpose, turning compost. This is my first time using the foot control so it's a little herky-jerky at times.

Very impressive build. :beerchug:

One word of warning, I notice that you are traveling with the loaded bucket in the raised position. That is a recipe for flipping it over. Always travel with a loaded bucket as close to the ground as possible.

This compost is pretty light and fluffy. But yes, with a bucket load of dirt you can feel the rear-end is pretty light and then I keep the bucket lower.

That brings up one design flaw, the bucket doesn't curl up as much as I'd like with the arms down. If it had about 10 more degrees of rotation it would be a little better.

Alvy 09-29-2014 07:51 PM

Great work Rob. Always have seen the output shaft on the hydros with the hole in it, looks like it needed something and you hit the nail on the head. I've hauled a couple that I need to bring the ole Echo with me just to get out of the woods, awesome job with before and afters, I'm sure you get a headache counting all the hours you have in it.

Question, do you have a float function with the hyd. Control valve?

Lew already asked this but looks like you're in Zippy land, you guys should compare notes over some coldies. :beerchug:

Rob_M 09-29-2014 08:15 PM

The control valve doesn't have a float function that I know of.

I have Zippy's phone #, just need to get around to calling him.

zippy1 09-30-2014 12:13 AM

That tractor came a long way from where it began:beerchug:
Nice job on the FEL, and hydraulics.:beer2:

drglinski 09-30-2014 11:27 AM

I could've used that during the winter of 13/14. I like where you mounted the hydraulic pump. Yay for videos!

Great looking machine, though! I'd love to have a loader on a Cub one day.

thanks

I can take a few pics of the subframe tomorrow.

The pump is a Northern tool .388" unit, http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...9706_200329706.

I couldn't get any pictures that show the subframe very well so these are screen shots of the 3D model.

So hey Rob_M, You have any long term reports on that pump that you spec'ed? :bigthink:

Oak 01-17-2018 10:37 AM

That is a good loader pump and lots of people are using them. I have one on my Kwik Way loader and it works great.

OP, nice build.:beerchug:

It has been trouble free. I use this thing about once a week and haven't had any issues other than one of the compression fittings leaking.

Size-wise it seems to be perfect. The lift speed could be a little faster but safety-wise it is probably good that it is slower. If you go to lift something too heavy it will pop the back wheels off the ground before you know it, LOL
