hey guys so on my last haul I had picked up three tractors 2 being cubs . I had free time today and started to mess with my 71 will start with the shape its in which is rough I think, gonna need some welding as the tower has some rot from the battery rubbing and I wouldn't doubt acid. So here are pics when I got it

the air cleaner is very special it was the first Ziploc clear cleaner , you could watch it clean as it ran :biggrin2:. I bought a cover on ebay and it just came in so I put it on. she gonna need some new exhaust id say the rusty muffler special is toast . anyone have pics of a nice stack setup on a narrow frame cub , do you need a muffler for the back pressure on these or is straight fine

jeepchicken5000 10-12-2014 07:02 AM

Alvy 10-12-2014 08:29 AM

I purchased the same one and couldn't get the fields compressed enough to get the armature to spin freely. What did you end up doing?

jeepchicken5000 10-12-2014 07:02 PM

I had to clamp them in with a C clamp to get them In enough then tighten the screws

jeepchicken5000 10-13-2014 06:57 AM

I hooked up the starter gen on the 71 and rigged the wires to the on off switch someone installed little carb clean in the carb and fired right up turn it over good now . Ill be taking it apart fairly soon to be painted but not doing a complete tear down , I will need some parts for it but not to many ill post in the wanted page if I cant find what I need

darkminion_17 10-13-2014 09:56 AM

Glad to hear it runs,
is your garage heated to paint in?

jeepchicken5000 10-13-2014 07:43 PM

the only heat is body heat unless I grab the propane but ill be ok , suppose to be warm here next couple days and idk how far I really will get . I got a couple pics of it right now looks about the same but I did get it running, it has a walbro carb on it which id rather have the carter but it must be a rebuilt engine or a new one cause its pretty clean looking and don't smoke one bit but I cant seem to get it running with out choke then it gets to choked then I take it off and it dies, whats the settings on the walbro carb for a 8 HP?

started to sand blast and clean up some parts, the implament handle was almost wore right through I was surprised must have had a lot of use maybe the reason to a replacement engine , it has the walbro carb and newer black sheet metal . well any way hope to get more done today will see how it goes more pics to come oh and I did drive it before taking it apart pretty nice ride haha

pretty much done need a choke cable and a clutch hoop cover , some reflectors would be good or tail light even .

Alvy 10-16-2014 09:59 PM

Looks great Mr. Chicken. Quality work and very fast. You still using the majic paint? I mixed mine 4:1:1. Can you elaborate how you mix yours? Do you use the hardener? Or clear afterwards?

cubcadet 10-17-2014 06:25 AM

Looks great.:beer2:

jeepchicken5000 10-17-2014 07:06 AM

I still use majic paint, I did go over to the school bus yellow in a gallon, its the same as cub cadet yellow but you need to buy cub cadet yellow spray cans because school bus cans are the wrong color. I mix my majic paint when doing a hopper ful 16 ounces paint 2 ounces reducer and 3 caps full of hardener idk what that comes out to be but it always works great and I can assemble next days for my majical restorations . now what do you guys use for primer, you have to have a good base for the paint I always use rustoleum white primer never failed me and works great gives a nice true color , don't spray this paint over none primed surfaces it wont come out that good .

Alvy 10-17-2014 05:31 PM

I used school bus yellow in the gallon, and you're right, the spray can school bus yellow comes out very dull, seems cub cadet yellow is much brighter.

put her to work today did pretty good but I need to get a choke cable and throttle cable since I don't have a choke and throttle don't have enough travel to work the carb, its not a cub cadet throttle cable. other then that it did great looks great matches my 102 nice ill pos a pic in the pictures thread

darkminion_17 10-17-2014 07:25 PM

you don't f around when it comes to painting and restoring these.Nice work

jeepchicken5000 10-17-2014 07:41 PM

nope my schedule is I have to have them done in as little time as I can , never know who needs the garage would have been an extra day if I had to work but 3 days is good about the quickest I can do think my 70 was the same

Alvy 10-17-2014 08:08 PM

Btw unless my eyes deceive me you used a more correct white for this model instead of the "IH white" that you spoke about and used on the others. Can you tell us what white you used? Again, like everyone else says, you really did a fine job.

jeepchicken5000 10-17-2014 08:13 PM

I used IH white I don't change paint except I went to the school bus yellow but no one would notice the difference
