Rebuilt K321 14hp First Run Video

Well my first attempt at rebuilding an old Kohler single-cylinder seems to be a success. New Kohler pistons, rings and rod and bored .30 over. Fired off almost immediately and is purring like a kitty.

another great video. great work on the engine. I really liked the rearend video. it was very helpful.

Nice video! Always a great feeling to fire 'em up the first time after major engine work or a rebuild. Congrats! :beerchug:

Thanks guys, and yes it's a great feeling when they come to life. Of course new parts and a new bore make a lot of difference, but it definitely runs smoother with the balance gears out.

I think I may just make it before winter.

Runs great, nice work.:beer2:

Sounds excellent. I have one in my 149 if you would like to do another. Should be a snap for an old pro like you!:biggrin2:

Is that the gas tank with all the pin holes you had to repair?

Alvy 09-17-2014 07:27 PM

Nice job Saturn. I like your paint work too. You're getting there. Takes time but it pays off.

Calvins66Cub 09-17-2014 07:46 PM

Good work!! I like the video.:beerchug:

Lookin' good! Keep up the good work.

OldCubby 09-17-2014 10:02 PM

Nice job, Saturn! Looks good!

TheSaturnV 09-17-2014 10:23 PM

Thanks for the kudos guys, helps keep the motivation going. Bolivier, yes shortly after this video was taken I noticed the tank cradle was soaked in fuel. I must have mixed my paint right, because the gas didn't affect the paint at all. I've since soldered it and am prepping it for an inner tank cote.

i dont think you can coat the inside of that tank because of the baffles in it, coating it may ruin the tank.

sounds good from jersey, how are you going to break the motor in?

Good point. Anyone here successfully coat a older Cub tank?

Edit: The baffles don't appear to be an issue when sealing:

Years ago I bought a 78' Kawasaki 750 motor cycle and the PO left alittle fuel int he tank, well it caused condensation in the tank and it rusted inside. I was pointed towards a product called POR15. But it was specifically for gas tanks. It was a two part process. Check out the link....

I would assume this would work for your cub tank.

I've used Red Kote on two tanks with pinhole or seam leaks. Worked like a charm. Bought a quart from O'Reilly's and barely used any of it. Just followed the instructions. I think the qt can was about $28.

Ok thanks guys. I had already picked up a container of sealant from Eastwood just for small fuel tanks. I hope it's as tough as the red stuff. As far as ruining the tank, if I can't fix the leaks then it's useless anyway. Sounds like prep is the big key, starting off with the cleanest, driest surface possible.

I use acetone to clean tanks when I coat them, just pour about a cup in and swish it around and then drain in. The acetone will evaporate pretty quick leaving a clean and dry tank.
