Why did my deck drive belt break?

This is my BIL's deck from his LT2180. I hooked him up with this tractor only a couple months ago after the Snapper ZTR that he bought new a couple years ago was turning into a POS. Looking back at it now I'm surprised the Snapper lasted as long as it did. He has only put 28 hours on the Cub, at the rate he's going I'm not so sure it will survive a couple hundred. Told him to keep it dry and to blow the cuttings off after mowing, guess that is never going to happen. Grass on the deck was starting to rot. This is the third belt in less than 30 running hours. Pulleys are perfect, spindles are nice and free. My guess is it's run WFO all the time and what ever they hit with it who cares. Man I hate it when people just flat out abuse nice stuff. I'm done hooking him up next time he should get a walk behind. Rant over.

I'll post some before and after pics of the hood of this tractor tomorrow. Just shoot me for trying to help this moron out.

I have never seen a deck with that much accumulated grass before!! :bigthink:

Then, again, I never looked!!

:LMAO1:

I agree, that kind of person needs a walk behind, mine is rather indestructible!!

Look at the torn up steel lip at the front of the deck. Ya think that could have made any sounds as the blades were hitting it or maybe stopping the blades from turning? He needs a goat. :beatdeadhorse:

The stories that discharge chute could tell,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

:biggrin2:

Wow, sure looks like Cub abuse to me. Make some rubber blades then they would just bounce around instead of destroying stuff. I doubt if a good cut is much of a concern. :bash2::bigeyes:
I'm guessing that you won't be loaning your equipment to him.

No kidding! Anyway the torn lip has been removed, it has a new OEM Cub belt on it, I ran it and it works just fine. No more freebies for this guy, he can start paying for his stupidity. Maybe when his wallet gets banged he'll wise up. Can't wait till he finds out what a deck shell will cost him. :biggrin2:

They are great exercise machines, and they do work, too!!

Better than an hour on a "Stairmaster" and an hour on a Cub Cadet!! :biggrin2:

BUT, Sam Mac has that covered, an hour on a Cub Cadet, and TWO hours fixin' what the BIL breaks!! :ExtremeFunny:

That's what my Dad tells me. Even with the sulky! :biggrin2:

Man I hate seeing grass built up like that. Mine get a minimum blown off after every use. Bout once a month I give em a good wash down and scrape the junk off the bottom... that reminds me I havnt taken the top cover off my 1450s 50 inch deck since I got it back in Feb.

Well between the BIL and his 10 year old son they are doing a serious stress test on this poor critter. Guess these 2000 series tractor are pretty tough after all. Forgot to mention they also bent the lift lever. Oh you have to push the little black button it when you pull up on the handle? Thing even has the spring assist so it takes like 2 fingers to lift the deck. I had to put a 2" pipe over the handle to straighten it. Give me a break. These 2 stars could probably bust a Cat D-11.

Leadslingingdaddy 09-14-2014 08:34 AM

Get him an old reel mower and tell him to have at it next time...good for his heart too!

cubs-n-bxrs 09-14-2014 08:56 AM

Sam get him a scythe. Couple days of swinging one of them maybe the butt crack will appreciate power equipment and how to run and maintain it properly.:beerchug::beerchug:

jimbob200521 09-14-2014 09:06 AM

What in the world is this guy mowing that could damage a deck like that?! Yeesh, tell him to pick the bikes and garden hoses up off the lawn before he mows :bash2:

CADplans 09-14-2014 10:43 AM

Sam Mac, I think you should re-title this thread,,,, :bigthink:

The word "my" denotes ownership of the problem, Hmmmmmmmmm,,,,,

Change it to the word "the".... then you no longer "own" the problem,,,,,, :Choke:

:High5:

Todd

It had 132 hours on it when I bought it. It now has 160 on it so the Cub wrecking team has beat it up pretty good in just 28 hours.

I guess the silver lining in this deal is when they trash the tractor I may be able to pickup a good Vanguard for a re-power for cheap. :biggrin2:

When you give the mower back to him, hand him a bill for the work. ( tell him this is the value of the work you did) Let him know the next time he brings it to be fixed, he will have to PAY for you fix his carelessness :bash:

Maybe you better make sure the engine is topped off on oil too if you might end up with it.
