1863 with 48"GT deck. Belt too long

The belt on my 1863 with 317-48" deck broke. I ordered a 5/8 x 92" replacement belt but it is to long. I measured the old belt this morning at 88". I took the old belt to my cub dealer this morning and he said the 5/8x92 belt is what it calls for. The 88" belt has been on it since I got the tractor and has worked OK. Something must be screwed up about the deck attachment but I have no idea what. Picture of the mule drive pulleys almost rubbing with the 92 inch belt installed.

Don't know what happened to the picture.

According to the Cub Cadet parts look-up site, it calls for a 954-3001 Belt, which is a Section B x 91.68" long (or 5/8" x 92").

A better picture of the Mule Drive Assembly would be most helpful.

I made some more pictures but it's so humid here the lens kept fogging up. I don't have a lot of room between the back of the deck and the wheels, maybe 2 inches. I figure I would need to go back at least an inch to get close to the belt adjustment notches. I was hoping this was a common problem. Does anything affect the front and rear position of the deck other than the hanger to mule drive attachment point?

I was hoping for a better shot (or wider angle) of the top picture. I suspect the arms to the Mule Drive maybe mounted in the wrong spot.

I believe this is the hole the 317 owners manual shows.

Perhaps mounting the arms in this location....

With the proper mounting and belts, you should end up with the Mule Drive Pulley alignment like this........Belt Alignment

If the 88" belt worked fine for a long time, I probably wouldn't worry about having the "right" belt.

That said, my 48" mower mounts in the same holes as the OP's and the belt fits fine. I believe you could move the deck back to the aft holes on the carriage with a 48" deck. No way on a 54".

(A) There is something obviously wrong.

(B) The pictures presented, do not reveal the whole condition or situation.

So, we can only speculate as to what is the problem.:Unknown:

A. I agree
B. We know where the hanger is mounted to the mule drive, the spring latches are connected to the deck on the other end of that arm. The deck will hit the rear wheels (deck all the way up) if I mount the hanger in the rear most holes. I don't know what else to take a picture of.

With the deck up a 1 inch board is tight between the wheel and deck, I can't go back 2 inches to the rear hole. The ruler is center of the rear spring pin on the deck to center of hanger to mule drive attaching bolt.
I'm probably going to pick up a shorter belt and not worry about it.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm:bigthink:

Bearing in the center of the deck isn't bad is it? :bigthink:
Is the center deck pulley the right one?
Is it worn out and the belt deep in the groove?
How about the PTO? Is the PTO pulley wore out and the belt deep in that groove?

It is also entirely possible, that the parts book is wrong. We've seen that more than once. If everything looks OK, I'd just run the 88" belt.

UNDER EDIT: I guess if the book was wrong, we would have heard about it before, and I'm sure the dealers would have known by now..... probably not the case.

You have it mounted in the correct hole, the rear hole is for the Supers.

Am I just looking for a 5/8 x 88" (5L88) or is this a "d section" belt that will have another number?

I thought it was a "B" section belt...... :bigthink:

If you aren't going to get it at CC, why not just take the old one to a parts store and have them match it up......

Your right it is "B" section.
This Tractor supply belt is marked B85K/5L880K. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...5-8-in-x-88-in
Is it the same profile as the 954-3001 or are all 5/8 wide belts the same profile.

R Bedell 08-21-2014 05:41 AM

There is a difference between a "5L" and "Section B" belts. Section B Belts are heavier construction designed for heavier loads.
The correct size in a B Section belt is - B85

Cannon51 08-21-2014 03:49 PM

I ended up with this 5/8 x 90" belt from tractor supply. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...5-8-in-x-90-in
The 88" belt was to short. The 90" belt is hitting the adjustment notches on the mule drive as shown in the 317 Manual. I mowed about 20 minuits with it without any trouble except the belt felt a little to hot after I got done. Thanks for everyones input.
