Cub Cadet Repower?

Has anyone tried one of these engines in their cub? http://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/...tegory=1709753

besides looking like crap its kinda pricey, i can rebuild the original engine for less than that provided there was no major failure.

J-Mech 07-31-2014 09:38 PM

I haven't.

Why? I'll sell you a rebuilt "K" series for $675 plus shipping. Why wouldn't you go with Kohler?

garnold 07-31-2014 09:42 PM

I guess since I'm still learning about engines and how to rebuild them, other options might be go to know about. Though I didn't know I could get one rebuilt by someone for that price range. So you feel that a rebuilt kohler is still a better choice then a new engine with no hours on it? Does this engine offer anything over the stock?

olds45512 07-31-2014 09:47 PM

i would go with a rebuilt kohler hands down. the motor you linked will look terrible in a cub not to mention you'll have to get creative with the wiring harness to make it work.

Oh, interesting on the electric. I thought that would be plug and play but no luck huh.

nope, it will require cutting and splicing the factory wiring harness to get it to start and charge.

darkminion_17 07-31-2014 09:54 PM

hands down with the kohler, tecumseh was not meant to be in a cub cadet

garnold 07-31-2014 09:59 PM

Guess sticking with a kohler is the way to go.

CubDieselFan 07-31-2014 09:59 PM

I agree with everyone else. You would never be happy and it would look like crap in a 102. Plus you will spend more money and the Kohler is better. No reason not to rebuild it.

J-Mech 07-31-2014 10:13 PM

Kohler all the way. :beerchug:

Buy the Tecumseh! They make excellent boat anchors! i agree rebuild the Kohler or find another Kohler out of a similar tractor that is still good.

I haven't had any experience with 'new' Tecumseh engines; only the old one that's on my Horse Tiller and it runs great. Looks like the new ones are built in WI, not sure if it's still an in house design. Their headquarters are still in Ann Arbor, MI for whatever that's worth. I can't find any negative reviews of them that would point out they are junk. 2 yr warranty isn't bad either. You could probably disguise the engine as well so it didn't look like a repower if you are worried about looks.

I guess it depends on what you want to do. Are you doing a restoration or is kohler just getting a little tired? Or are you looking for a little more hp/torque? One trade off I can see is that old kohler is way heavier than the Tecumseh so you'll lose a little mass there. If it were me, I'd do a compression check on the old Kohler and price out what it is to freshen it up before repowering. :beerchug:

:Morning: Like stated, Kohler is the only way to go. Why degrade a CC with one of those Tok-cum-see's. But its your tractor, so you can do what you want with it. :American Flag 1:

I agree 100%...I have an old Troy Bilt Tiller that has a 6hp Tecumseh on it and it is a pile of crap compared to its counterpart Kohler. At some point I will be looking to swap that motor off of that, but for now the CUB had my full attention.

cubcadet 08-01-2014 10:55 AM

Stick with the kohler.:beer2:

but it does fit the very rare and elusive 103.

there's no reason why a "properly" rebuilt K series can't give you another 30 - 40 years of service. there are allot of hack job rebuilders out there so find a guy that knows what He's doing. Jon's price's are very good for the quality of the overhaul you get and you know He knows the product .

Besides tecumseh is out of business, kohler is still at it making motors and bidets
