782 won't go
I have a 782 (new to me). When I push the hydro lever to forward .... nothing. Pull to reverse... nothing.
Another time I started it and pushed it all the way forward and it went (pretty fast, not slowest speed). Then another time I pushed all the way forward, it paused a few seconds, then made a screeching sound and took off. Pulled the fender and the hydro linkage appears to be working as it should. The trunion is not worn at all (first one I have had that didn't have the trunion worn). I took the tunnel cover off the the drive shaft is spinning. While the fenders were off I pulled the top off the rear end and its plenty of hydro fluid (not horribly dirty). Lift doesn't work either. Could a filter clog and do this? (filter looks old). I do have a spare hydro, but wasn't planning on using it for this one (just gave one away as well, dang, maybe should have kept it). A bad hydro seems to be a rare occurrence. Whats next to try?? (Filter I know but I don't have one, maybe time to go get some....) But most likely the experts here will sort it out quickly. |
Me thinks your issue is an air leak draining hydro fluid out of the lines. Is why after some time your tractor shoots off after you engage the hydro.

Change the Hydro Fluid and Filter.

An air leak is a new one - an air leak where? |
Here is a long shot to check out but worth checking. Make sure the rear pin is good on the flex coupler to the hydro shaft. If a pin shears off the drive shaft will be turning but the hydro may not at times and may turn at times.

While you have the rear end opened up, here is a real good opportunity to clean it up. Get a new cover gasket and then install you new Hydro Fluid and Hydro Filter. |
I agree with the guy above-sounds like a driveshaft pin wore through or broke.

I say fluid and filter. If that doesn't fix it, come back.

Im guessing fluid and filter as well. Had a 129 that would do this as well as randomly stop moving and it had a clogged filter

So far in the pool we have:
Fluid/filter Drive pin sheared Other Put your bets in, we will know which of these three a little later this morning... (oh, the suspense!!) :coffee: |
And the winner is......
Fluid/Filter. :beer2: The fluid was pretty dark. Some clumps in the bottom but not as bad as the last one I did. The filter seemed to me to have been changed approximately..... never. (rusted can, and stuck on there good). It was a red filter and hard to make out the writing - possibly Case? (will inspect this a little closer) New filter, new fluid, and it runs/drives as smooth as anything. :biggrin2: |
Dang,! Lol....glad to hear its going again
|
Hmmmmm....... yet another fix with fluid and filter.
Red filter= Baldwin |

Thanks to everyone here for some great insight/advice. I feel like I am learning some things.... :beerchug: |
You should also clean all the hydro pump fins while you are In there.

Glad to hear ya got it fixed. Them clogged filters can cause all sorts of headaches. Mine would run good and strong for about 50 ft then slow down and stop. Let it sit over night and itd do the same thing...this is a great site filled with many knowledgable and helpful people. Tis the reason I keep coming back

When my 782 first had problems, it would sometimes not roll forward when I wanted it to. I couldn't figure out why. I'd try it forward, then reverse, then forward again and it would work. I assumed it was purely mechanical and while it was annoying, I could live with it. Then, I decided to change the fluid and filter. I was adding a hitch and since I was back there I figured I'd just get the job done. Never had a hiccup since.
