20 Horse Gear Drive?
 

First time post. This is a fantastic site information-wise.

Under either the International or MTD banner, did they manufacture a wide or spread frame tractor with a 20 horsepower engine that was gear drive, not hydro?

If so, what model was it and what engine did it have?

As far as I know the 1535 would probably be the highest HP gear drive. It was rated at 15HP but supposedly it was actually 18. I'm sure others with more knowledge will chime in on this one.

Sam the 1806 was a 18hp magnum gear drive with a creeper. They are a pretty rare bird.

YUP, and there is nothing to say one couldn't drop in a M-20 in the 1806 too.

Think it's the same deal as the 1541 with the Mag18 that they called a Mag15. Interesting topic. :bigthink:

This is from the service manual. Looks like the 1535 is just a Cyclops version of the 1806 to me.

Yeah, We seen it before. They take a 18HP engine and de-tune it (Carb) and make it a 15HP engine.

Both those tractors are pretty rare.

The 1535:
*Last 3 speed trans GT made by CCC.
*Only gear drive Cyclops

Thanks for the replies and I looked through the Repair Manual for these machines and see it was available in both gear (1806) and hydro, the hydro being an 1812.

I found this one to be interesting. I've never paid any attention to the later gear drive stuff. Now I want one. Love to find a 1535 with a blown engine and drop a CH22 in it.

Good luck. They don't come around very often. You can use any wide frame gear drive as a base. They are all the same. Or, convert a hydro.

A 582, 1050, 1606, 1806, 1535 (cyclops), were all the same base tractor as far as a platform for the motors, and frame.

Or, you can get a hydro frame and just put a gear drive in it.

I have what is left of the 1050 and it looks like I have enough to put together another M18 Hmmmmm. Build a 1050 or go big :bigthink:

I have a 1050, but it's such a rare tractor I don't want to change it over to a twin. Might do a hot 14 with the 10's tinwork so it still looks the same, but I really don't want to put a twin in.

That is not bad for a straight one owner machine plus the extras and 4 new tires.

If I were to do a 20HP gear drive, it would have to be a Super,,,,,, :bigthink:

The only attachment that really needs lots of HP is the mower deck, 20HP needs a 60" deck,,,,

The Super is large enough to mount a 60" deck.

The high HP also needs 26" tires to help get the HP to the ground, again, a Super. :bigeyes:

I mow with a 24HP (Onan engine) gear drive,,, I use a 72" deck

I wish there was another gear between 2nd, and 3rd,,, more HP is kinda meaningless in 2nd, my 10HP QL can push the blade with the front wheels lifted in 2nd, in 3rd, you would have a hard time staying on the tractor.

A snow blower would make good use of the extra power. The two things that are hardest (in general) on a garden tractor are mowing and snow blowing. Then again, you generally don't want to blow snow on a gear drive, too much variation in speed, so I guess it's a moot point :Unknown:

I could see it for plowing...... if you could get it to the ground. For the most part, we all know that we run out of traction before power.
