Bolivier's 1650 refresh thread

I see all of you guys threads on here and I've really been wanting to revamp one of my tractors. This isn't going to be a resto, just a refresher if you will. There will be some painting, but mostly I want a good working tractor that doesn't look to bad either.

Here is what I'm starting with. Some of you may have seen this in my "Yellow fever has struck again" thread.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps55c30e4d.jpg

No muffler. I'm not too concerned about the tins around the muffler, but I will most definitely be getting a new muffler.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...psf2a73e3f.jpg

None of the lights work. One headlight is dangling by the wire. Terminal is broken on that light. All lights will be functional when finished.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...psda46fbc1.jpg

Gas tank is just sitting there. It looks like somebody was working on it, and never finished putting it back together......or they just used it as is.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps5ee5142b.jpg

Just a shot of the front of it. My other 1650 has a circle cut out in the mesh grill for the exhaust to exit. This one does not. I thought all quietlines exhaust exited through the hole in the grill??

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps30a9d531.jpg

Steering is loose. Dash tin is completely faded out. Wires sticking out of the fuse holder.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps3d5da9e5.jpg

A little body work needed. There is also a small hole in the hood. Looks like maybe for a switch at one time. Have to weld that up too.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...psf687a54e.jpg

I'm not sure how involved it am going to get with this project. I'm just going to tear into and go from there. I want to fix all mechanical issues first. I just ordered some side panels off ebay that look WAY better than the tractor. So I will for sure be painting the hood, dash, and nose to look as good as the side panels. Then I'm going to HAVE TO order some new decals. Probably end up painting the frame and fender pan. We'll see.

Here are the new panels.

Talk at ya later.

Well I started tearing it down tonight. Here's how it went.

Fender pan off

Trunnion

Who needs a fan!! Notice the fram filter.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps2888e7fa.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...psdf3cc171.jpg

More coming off.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps96d143d8.jpg

Literally the only things keeping the gas tank from falling off was the fuel line and the hood. Cool muffler eh??

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps78ec25a0.jpg

Removed the piece that was behind the non existent muffler. It was broken.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps0bd61983.jpg

Going to get another gas tank. This is duct tape that is covered with what appears to be epoxy or sorts.

How it sits now.

Can someone tell me when this tractor was made? Where is that data so I can look up my other tractors? Thanks.

Maxwelhse 05-24-2014 12:28 AM

My 1650 doesn't have the grill hole either. I kinda like it better without it, personally.

I had no idea the guy that cobbled up my 1650 had a matched pair and sold them both! :) I'll be following along too as a mental preparation for getting back to working on mine! Soooo much to do!

I also want to know how your cat enjoys bike rides! :)

If I'm reading it right, august of 79'. You take the numbers after the u and look them up here. The serial number in the box was the first made that month.

Yup, that trunnion is roached.
Some of the QL's had a hole and others didn't, never really understood that.
Amazing what you find when you start tearing into these tractors:bash2::bigthink:

ACecil 05-24-2014 09:57 AM

Good job on the tear down. Please keep the updates coming.

Cub Cadet 123 05-24-2014 10:22 AM

The labor of love....You are going to take a tractor that has been well used and turn it into a dependable tractor that can be used well! Keep up the great work buddy!

Looks like this will be a great thread to follow,

Will you be changing the motor mounts, doing the engine cradle modification and adjusting the steering, if necessary?

Pulling the motor out today. I will be putting new iso mounts if needed. Definitely doing cradle mod. The steering is loose and will be addressed.

Haven't pulled the engine out yet, but did make progress. The wiring harness is out. The lighting and pto part of the harness are cobbled up. Easy fix. Got the dash and tower off.

The shroud with the weather strip is a little damage. Nothing I can't fix.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps1d114602.jpg

Made sure to take a picture of the linkages. And the cool ground wire.

Wiring harness out, and dash off.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...psd17cc301.jpg

Damage on the bottom of the tower that looks to have been repaired before. I will fix this with my mig.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...pse8d8efbf.jpg

At the point now where I need to decide if i'm going to split the tractor or not. The rear is leaking, so I'm going to pressure wash it so I can get a good look at where it is coming from. More to come...

ACecil 05-26-2014 08:40 PM

Thanks for the pics and update.

MinnesotaCadet 05-26-2014 09:28 PM

I just parted out a 1250. If you need any parts send me a PM and I might have it. :beerchug:

bolivier 06-01-2014 11:10 PM

No big updates today. Stayed in some floating cabins over the weekend, but I did have some packages when I came back.

Muffler thanks to Alvy

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...psdc08edf8.jpg

And a pair of really nice side panels off ebay

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps31cc7a58.jpg

That's all for now.
Brent

ACecil 06-01-2014 11:39 PM

Glad you got your parts!

sawdustdad 06-02-2014 10:38 AM

You are well along the way to a nice tractor! Love those new side panels. The rear end doesn't look too bad. I've see a LOT worse!

Cubcrazy 06-02-2014 12:35 PM

It's nice seeing the parts truck come!:beer2:

Sugarmaker 06-02-2014 02:29 PM

There is a lot of work on these but you will have a nice dependable tractor when done.
Thanks for the great pictures of your progress!
Regards,
Chris

Made some progress today. Got the motor out and pressure washed it.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...psc9e7ea2f.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...pse4882a31.jpg

Look how much the frame is worn from the motor rails sitting on the frame.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps3ed47f23.jpg

No wonder the motor was leaning to the right.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps8fec60b6.jpg

Cool huh?

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps61fa14a4.jpg

Looks like this has been broken and welded back together. This is connected to the hydraulic cylinder.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps044b939f.jpg

Frame is cracked on both sides, and has been welded on the bottom. I'm thinking of plating it on the inside of the frame rail as long as the motor rails don't interfere.
