April showers bring May.....................O's?

Bought an O today (thank you OCC member truckntran). Came with a k181 recoil and 6-12's that were extras. Also has a creeper. The Tecumseh will be coming out and I am looking for a k161 to go in. Also picked up a 4 digit recently, had some crazy fenders (normal for me, same thing was done to my 73). Rear end had tons of sludge in it. Washed it out with diesel fuel after I carved off the fenders, filled with cheap oil because I'm going to do bushings and axle seals soon due to leaks. Fixed a shorted to case start coil and she now starts and runs really wellAlso have some other needed parts on order and others in the works from Mr. P. Here's some pics.

Thanks guys. And yes, it's a may 61 i think. End of the 4 digits since it's a 9k serial. Haven't got the serial yet on the creepy one. It's still in NY. Front hitch will meet its fate from the fire wrench like the fenders did, just haven't made it there yet. I will say that it's made well just not meant to stay there.

ACecil 05-22-2014 11:37 PM

Congrats on your O's!

zippy1 05-22-2014 11:57 PM

Congrats on the O's:beerchug:
Man, if those two could talk, I'd bet they have a story that would make the hair on your neck stand on end.:bigthink:

Agreed. Btw, almost positive the guy I bought it from said it's main purpose was to be used as a Christmas decoration/yard art. Glad I saved it. :bash2:

Great save. "Christmas decoration/yard art" some peoples kids! There is proof why some people shouldn't breed:bigthink:

look like boat trailer fenders.
Betchya the front hitch was for moving boat trailers too.

You might want to unbolt and save that front hitch.

Yeah he said that fenders were homemade/tsc fenders although I'm wondering/have been told that they may be O fenders that were modified but I'm not sure as this is my first one. And my buddy that picked it up for me said he had a small boat and jet ski trailer and lived on a lake so I don't doubt it. It's welded on the front though, pretty heavy stuff.

J-Mech 05-23-2014 10:18 AM

Good score on the O's! That rear end looks like crap.

With what you said about boats and stuff, looks like they might have used the O to "put in" with. That rear end looks like it's been under water. :bigthink:

Yeah buddy I'm thinking so too. It cleaned up as well as it could although it's difficult to get the sludge out of the reduction housing. I took off the shifter and poured a bunch of diesel in it and washed out the rear but the reduction housing has no where to do it. I'm hopeful that me running a mixture of diesel and hydraulic oil will churn it up and thin it out enough to pass through the drain holes into the main body of the rear end when I change it again.

Mike I think I'd just pull it out and take the front cover off. With that much water you know the bearings are junk. :crap:

Nice finds on the Originals! That coil on the one is very neat looking...never seen one like that before!

Yeah it's a giant Delco coil with a built in heat sink deal. The coil wire actually screw into the top of it, kinda neat but I'm changing it

C5rider 05-23-2014 09:39 PM

VERY nice Mike.

Ya finally got your Original (x2) :beer2:

If I can help, let me know!

Absolutely, I consider you to be the "O"-be Wan of Originals. I think we have quite the presence at Flywheelers with cubs, hoping I can at least get the 800 done by November but the O's are going to jump in front of the line after that for restos. I can definitely see why you like them so much, very unique

zippy1 05-24-2014 12:21 AM

Most likely the axle tubes are full of crap also, and it's not coming out unless you take the tubes off to clean them. But if your restoring it I would imagine your putting in new gaskets anyway.:beerchug:

Yeah I just wanted to make sure things work mechanically before the restores so no surprises afterwards. I currently have the 800 trans almost all the way back together after being gutted so it's fresh on my mind. Probably going to do O next.

Alvy 05-27-2014 10:18 PM

Got some work done on the O tonight, axle seals are toast and lots more sludge in the tubes and brake area. I'm a little afraid to see the end housings where the bushings go after I get it apart, LOTS of play in them, we shall see.

YUK!

Alvy 03-07-2015 02:45 PM

Can someone clarify this for me? I am placing an order for a few few special things and need item #3 shown but there are 2 different column part numbers and 2 different bearings. I'm assuming I have the 400904 column? This is for my O I'm restoring, thanks

darkminion_17 03-07-2015 05:10 PM

Mr Alvy,
You will get the black plastic bushing that all the steering columns use.You will have to remove #4 to use it.Don't forget to order #4 also.

But which number Mr. Yoda? There are (2) number 3's listed and they are differnt part numbers. And I have to remove number 4 to use number 3 but I also have to order #4?

darkminion_17 03-07-2015 05:36 PM

The two number 3's and 4 are the same when you order it,the black plastic one supersedes the old part #.The cub cadet parts lookup is your Yoda.

I've been working quite a bit on the Original as time allows. I've made some pretty decent progress as time has allowed. I realized it's been almost a year and the title of my thread is ironic a year later. Anyway, I chose to get the entire tractor blasted and covered everything with ductape I didn't want sand in. I've been asking questions behind the scenes to paint goo hoos like Tim and have been fine tuning how I do these as this is my fourth take apart, fix, and paint. (I'm not going to say restore because I'm just not there yet!).

Got some assembly done, it's coming a long. I used the usual school bus yellow from tsc with hardener and reducer in my new Cheapy HF hvlp gun but it seems to do well. I also for the first time got the Napa martin senior white paint but I think they mixed it wrong as it's more almond to me than it should be for this serial range. I'm bummed out about it but oh well at least it will be uniform. I gave them the paint code and everything from our site and they said it crossed and I could have my choice of two different levels, I chose the industrial finish or whatever they called it, came pre thinned and everything, just had to add hardener. Learned something too, martin senior is a division of sherwin Williams, did not know that.

I would take it apart and check it anyway, there is no gasket on the end cap.
I like painting outside also, plenty of light.

Alvy 04-03-2015 10:19 PM

Yeah that's probably a good idea I forgot about that actually for both ends. Surprisingly there wasn't any sand that got in the engine or transmission, it made easy work when I got it apart to just focus on the paint removal where the blaster couldn't get. I'm a fan of doing it this way and might do the next one the same who knows.
