Gt 2544
Hi ya'll. I'm the proud owner of a 2005 GT 2544 tractor. The intent was to replace my 1970 Jacobsen GT 16 Hydro. The Jake is still alive, but has been put out to pasture since the deck rotted away. Anyways, I had the Cub in the garage to go over planned services I'll do. I replaced two burnt out\broken headlamp bulbs, greased all zerks in the suspension and deck spindles, lubed the sticky throttle cable and blew a lot of caked on lawn crud out from under the machine. I have a brief question. Unlike my Jacobsen, when I push the go-fast pedal then release it, the tractor wants to keep moving forward as if the cruise control were on, which I'm pretty sure is not the case. This happens in forward and reverse. It's weird as well as dangerous if you expect the tractor to come to a halt after releasing the pedal. My Jake will stop so suddenly when you release the pedal it'll snap your neck forward. So, what gives with this Cub? What could be wrong with the hydrostatic drive or linkage?
I reviewed the owners manual and it said nothing about that run-away affect. Any thoughts would be appreciated. :beerchug: |
If you have the manual , read about the brake adjustment and the neutral adjustment on the Hydro , I am sure if you check those 2 things and adjust accordingly the 2544 will perform the way you want it to.

I've got a 2544 also, and there is an adjustment on the linkage under the floorboard. I can't remember exactly but if you want to do a search on threads that I've started I believe I have one concerning the issue.
You can also adjust the height of the reverse pedal a little bit that way you have a little more "oomph" in reverse. |
I read about the 'creeping' effect if the adjustment is out of whack, but my neutral seems fine. When I tap the brake the machine will stop and stay put but I have to apply the brake to get it to stop. It's almost like the cruise control is stuck on which it isn't. This occurs in forward and reverse. weird, huh? I rode her around for 10 mins to warm the hydro fluid and that didn't help much. The pedal(s) are very slow to return to neutral too. There seems to be considerable resistance on the linkage when operated by hand with the engine off. It's not binding, just 'sticky'? for lack of a better term. Mike

Mine stops dead in reverse but rolls a little forward when the accelerator is released
Check and see if the spring for tension on the accelerator is there or working , the moment you take your foot off it should return to the home position immediately from either forward or reverse Went and found my parts manual it it shows a couple of springs that are part of the control pedals , one appears to be a torsion spring on the forward throttle , the other is a spiral on the reverse. Have not worried to much about it Go to cub Cadets website and you can download the parts manual and that should be a big help to you Regards Oz |
Thanks Oz, I have the parts manual. I'll check it out to see if a spring is missing or whatever. I was under it tonight lubing the front axle and noticed a mini damper (looks like a lift gate piston from a car). It is attached to the drive\reverse linkage. I'm wondering if the damper is weak or what.
I'm not going to buy one and toss it on to see if it helps 'cause it's over $50 freakin' dollars. I can't afford to toss parts at this tractor. Mike |

'Re-gassed'? as in getting the mini damper re charged or something? I'm not sure I know what you meant, Oz. Oh BTW, since your 'down under'....is your Cub a R\H drive?....*lol :biggrin2:
Update: I checked my parts manual and didn't see the 'torsion' spring for drive that you were referring to. If it's not too much trouble OZ, could you list the p\n so I can locate it? Thanks in advance, Mike |
Definitely right hand drive , I mount and dismount just like on a horse always from the right side (lol)
Part No 732-0756A now please bear in mind I am looking at a gt2550 parts manual , there should be a commonality between some parts but cannot guarantee There are a number of businesses in Australia that do the regassing either drop off or they come to you , not expensive but a lot cheaper than new , especially from a dealer My old HDS2155 had that piston but this manual does not show it for the GT2550 plus this is a 2004 edition Where is CT would my guess of Connecticut be right?
