Cub Cadet Original Restoration
1 Attachment(s)
I've had this tractor since March of 2013. I traded a Wheel Horse C-101 for it. The PO turned out to be a kid my age and now we've become good friends, funny how you meet people from Craigslist isn't it?!
Well anyways, it got put onto the back burner it had to wait on another restoration to be completed before I started oh hèr. So finally, yesterday I pulled the piston and honed the cylinder walls. I will soon be taking the engine to a machine shop to get the cylinder walls and cranc mic'ed and have the valves ground and lapped. This is going to be a long build so stay tuned for updates. |
I look forward to seeing your progress!:beerchug:

Sweet!!!!
Gotta dig those Originals!
They're simple, they work well, even for a 7 or 8 horse engine and by golly, they're just kinda cute! (in a Chihuahua-totin', work-horse kinda way) Keep us informed how it all goes. |

Here's the 109 I restored that held me up for so long. I think it was well worth the wait!:beerchug:

I was able to pick up this nice little No. 1 trailer for $20.00. I paid the guy in all 1's and he said "thanks I'm going to Vegas soon".:ROTF1:

It may be a little rusty but it is a true survivor. There are no modifications done to it except for the "modified" crunch on the front of the hood.

Can't wait to see the updates on your O.
|
I have a K341 for a customer at the machine shop, when I pick that engine up I will drop the K161 for the Original off. Boy I can't wait!
|
Nice restore on the 109!
The O looks to be in good original shape and you got a heck of a deal on that #1!:beerchug: |

I was driving along one day and I saw that little cart leaned up against someone's garage, so I swung in the driveway and offered him $20 for it. The 109 was even better, I got it for free with brand new genuine Kohler parts for the rebuild.:biggrin2:

Sweet deals on some great IH cubs and IH trailer!! I ate up $20 the other day at a restaurant, but I'd much rather have the trailer and a PBJ!!! Congratulations on the finds.

Hey! This thread is about Originals! Let's not divert the entire forum with talk about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! :ROTF1::ROTF1::ROTF1:
Great to see another "O" getting the preferential treatment it deserves. Great little tractors! Keep us informed. The thinning PB and J population needs you! |

When the piston was removed 2 score marks were visible. So, I pulled out my cylinder hone and honed the cylinder after 4 try's one score was eliminated and the other was minimized. Unless the cylinder is egged out or out of accepted tolerances I think I should be able to stay with standard size parts. But I won't know until I can get to the machine shop. The valves will definately need gound and lapped because there is 51 years of carbon in there.

Wow I really needed to get going on this.
Anyways, Local machine shop closed and I was lucky enough to locate a private machinist who was able to help me out on this deal. Engine was bored to .020 over, polished crank, valve job completed (needed a new exhaust valve), head planed, and the crank polished. I sourced all NOS Kohler parts for the rebuild. All in all I have about $300 in parts and $100 in all machine work. |

Back Again

Hello everyone,
I had a Tuesday off recently so I took some time to start reassembly on the K161. I started with getting everything with the valves sorted out, being these are non adjustable valves it takes a bit to get them set properly. After that I started working on reassembling the governor and inserting the cam and getting all of that shimmed up properly. Moving on to the crank I elected to use the 2 NOS crank bearings I had just for good measure seeing that I was using all new parts everywhere else I figured I shouldn't skimp with one detail. This is where I stop, I realized I have the "large bore" ring set rather than the original "small bore" set that I should have. Now its just waiting on ePay.:bash2: I am fortunate enough to have quite a few original service manuals for these tractors and happen to have one specifically for the Original Cub Cadet motor. I have been referencing it quite frequently for specs as I embark on this long awaited project. |
Most Excellent!

Finally Done

Just realized I never updated this...
Well after some tinkering and fine tuning I got the motor to purr just like it should with no leaks anywhere, even the head gasket. So on we went to disassembly and body work. Welded the hood brace and seat and fixed the nose where the hood ornament mounts. I even managed to straighten the grille screen, which was a tedious task. Then there was a lot of priming and samding before I laid a couple coats of CaseIH Iron Guard for the finished look you see now. It has been a very long but very rewarding journey! |
Your O looks great!
