Pulley puller

4 Attachment(s)
I made this funny PTO basket puller today out of an old drive shaft, some longer basket pulley set screws and a sledge hammer head. It worked fine. Alternated the puller from one screw to the other. I put the Allen head of the screws into the holes in case it broke off so I can get it out later. I may change the set screws to non hardened ones though.

Don't forget your safety glasses!!!

Please comment if you please.

Way to use your noggin Lew!:beer2:

darkminion_17 03-07-2014 07:11 PM

I used the puller not my head!
BTW this was soaking for 2 days in PB so it kinda helped.

Nice "master of invention" idea Lew :beer2:

I like KROIL better than PB or LW.

Did you leave the PTO arm in place? I could make a piece for the driveshaft to slip over the threaded collar so the basket pulley would be driven straight off.

I used a different approach to get my pulley off.

I made a puller and drilled the pulley for 5/16-18NC ( "F" drill ) The spacing also works for removing the flywheel.

By using two longer bolts with 1/2" sockets, it makes a great PTO bearing puller :biggrin2:

Good idea lew, I could have used that idea 2 weeks ago, would have saved me a basket pulley!

Anything that Gits Er Done is a good thing, way to go Buddy! :beerchug:

I would have used the fire wrench and probably cooked the engine. :biggrin2:

Yes it was Nick.

Jeff,

I would like to see if you can make a collar to fit over the part of the pulley that has the set screws, then drill 2 holes in it that would line up the the ones on the pulley, put a threaded end on the collar to fit on a real slide hammer.sorta something like that...
There are different sizes of bushings on the pto baskets though,so you would have to get at least the two sizes I have seen.

zippy1 03-07-2014 08:38 PM

Good thinking Lew:beerchug:
So.... now if we want to make one, do we just get the drive shafts from Nick?:biggrin2:

What thread is your slide hammer? Have any pulley baskets to measure? I really don't want to disassemble my 125's :biggrin2:

I'll check with my fellow motorhead friend Dave

He built an exact copy of the dirt track car he raced in the 80s at Flemington,NJ. I know he'll have a slide hammer

Can you get pulley dimensions?

darkminion_17 03-07-2014 09:03 PM

I can get them tomorrow.
There is now a Walmart and some other stores there now. I used to pass that track all the time looking for cub cadets.

Measurements sound good, not so good is replacing a racetrack with a Walmart and other stores

Yep racetracks are an endangered species as far as I'm concerned. Any of you remember Bridgehampton? It's now a fricken golf course. After enough people built homes around it and then complained about the noise. Well moron you built next to a race track and now you want the noise stopped. :beatdeadhorse:

Yosemite Sam 03-08-2014 05:09 PM

LOL, Reminds me... Every couple of years, there is a whole big thing on the news about the people who live around Lambert Field in St. Louis complaining about the noise... My answer is "Well why in the @#$% did you buy a &*% house there, DUMB A$$???"

In the Fall, a couple that recently purchased a house close to Grandview Speedway http://www.grandviewspeedway.com/ went to a Township meeting and complained about the noise.

According to the newspaper report, the township said "tough luck". They also informed the people that the Speedway was there before the township had any rules and besides, they were grandfathered in. Grandview Speedway has been there racing every Saturday night for over 50 years. The township supervisor told them to talk to their realtor :biggrin2:

Once common sense ruled :beerchug:

darkminion_17 03-08-2014 07:39 PM

I bet they showed the house when there were no races that day.:biggrin2::biggrin2:

I don't want to stray far from the topic here.....but...

I'd love to have exhaust like that on my truck. If only it were legal....

In regards to living in stupid places- those that live in New Orleans- who's the bigger idiot- the idiot that first said "hey let's build a house below sea level and wonder why it gets flooded" or the idiot that said "I'll follow you there" ?

That looks great. Jeff are you going to weld a plate on the end with a nut in it? I was thinking to shorten it and do that so you could either use the lew slide hammer on it or if someone doesn't have a slide hammer they can thread a tapered end bolt in it like what's on a puller to push against the crank and if the pressure doesn't make it pop off a couple wacks on the bolt should make them go too. Just a thought.

It's going to get a 5/16" x 1" bar welded to the open end that's drilled 3/8-16 for a bolt to push against the crank.
