Cub 100 Carburetor
1 Attachment(s)
My 100 is acting up and I suspect it may be the carburetor. I've already had it running this year and turned about 75% of the garden last week. While it was running though, I had to leave the choke on the entire time otherwise it would die.
The last time I used it, it kept running worse and worse until it wouldn't run at all and hasn't cranked since. I cleaned the points and put in a new spark plug and neither seemed to help. After reading some on this forum, I checked the throttle shaft and there seems to be some play in it. Question: Should I buy a kit(s) and rebuild this carburetor or buy one of the aftermarket carbs online? If I rebuild this one, where is the best place to source parts, and what exactly will I need? Is there anything else I might need to look at on the tractor as well? Here is a picture of the top of the carburetor. The linkage looks a little different than some of the other pictures I've seen. I also noticed that the linkage is broken at the throttle shaft and just seems to be sitting there, not really fastened. Attachment 48108 Let me know what you think. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so please type slow. Don |
Sounds like it is just plugged up. Take it apart and clean it. Buy the kit, put it in. That isn't really rebuilding it, but it should help. If you can lift that ball and socket joint up off the linkage, then it is broke. New ones are available from cub cadet.

The ball and socket is not the part that's broken. It's the part that sits on the throttle shaft. Would that be a part of a throttle shaft kit?

If you do not have access to a mill I would find a newer #26 carb. |
It kinda sounds like the fuel supply is clogged somewhere.
If you take the line off at the carb and there is good flow then it is most likely clogged from the seat back to the elbow that screws into the side of the carb. You'll need to take the carb off and clean the fuel passage out. Best to rebuild it, but you may get by with just cleaning it out well. If you do not rebuild the carb, take the high speed screw out (screw it in all the way (finger tighten only) counting the turns, so you can put it back in close to where it was) and clean the tiny holes in it out, the needle is actually a tube so clean out the tube part too. This would also be a good time to clean out the tank and replace the filter or clean the bowl. If the part (throttle lever 385 496 R1) that slides down over the throttle shaft is actually broken, I'm not sure what to tell you. I have never had to replace a throttle shaft and have never looked for a throttle lever, it may now be made onto the throttle shaft. Hopefully someone else will know. If that part (throttle lever) is not broken then you can tighten it up with the pinch screw on the side. You can order a kit (it will have everything you need) from one of our fine sponsors at the top of the page, or get it from your local NAPA dealer. Be sure your timing is set correctly, check the tech section for the ideal way to set the timing. Good luck. |

I took the carburetor apart tonight and as you all said, it was very crusty on the inside. There was a lot of trash in there.
Attachment 48179 Attachment 48180 One of these screws looks a little curious. Attachment 48181 Is that normal? Attachment 48182 And here is the broken throttle linkage. Attachment 48183 The carburetor is a Carter Model N. I'm looking for kits for it now. The throttle shaft is a little loose, so I will probably go ahead and install a bushing, too. Don |
I gotta agree with Merk now, Get yourself a newer 26 then sell that one for parts on ebay and get at least half your money back.

This tractor will be always be a worker. I'm not concerned about keeping it original. So, in your opinion, would an aftermarket carb be an option?
Like this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kohler-K241-...item35cf1ef1c8 Or this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kohler-K241-...item2ecf23235d Or would a used one be better like this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kohler-10-12...item35d2bfac2a None of the throttle linkages look like mine, but they look like they might work. |

I ordered the carb and a gasket. The choke linkage appears to be on backwards as was mentioned in another post, but I'll figure something out when it gets here.
