1600?

did they ever make a 1600? i have a 1650 that i would like to take the CI rear out of for my 782d. i also have a 122 with a creeper thats half parted out would like to have a manual trans 1650 because the tiller pushes the hydro. with a manual trans and the clutch would the iso motor mounts need to change? isnt a 1200 a QL with manual trans how did the engines mount in them? im sure someone has done this before

IH never made a 1600 model.

Both the 1000 and 1200 were gear drive QL's. They used a "flex plate" on the back of the engine to allow for the isomounts. But in my experience the flex plate tends to fail and is very expensive to replace. If I were doing it, I would put in solid mounts for the engine and use the regular Cub Cadet transmission parts.

I say find ya a 1000 or 1200 with a bad engine and drop that 16 horse into it. I was going to do the same thing with my 1000 but I got the 10 horse running and it runs to good to pull

If you end up putting a manual trans in your 1650 just remember that you will lose the hydraulic lift which is nice to have lifting the tiller.

I have got to say, that using a hydro to till with is not at all relaxing. It seems that you are constantly moving the lever to match ground conditions and what the tiller is doing. Frankly I want my garden time to be fun and relaxing and not just something else that is yet "another aggravation".

Please know that I try not to be one of the guys that is constantly "going on" about what nice equipment they have, blah, blah... BUT

This is about the easiest to use, and fun to till with set-up that I've ever seen or used. It really has put the fun back in tilling.

Some day, I hope to have a freshly rebuilt 14hp engine in it, but for now, it's like tilling garden riding on a Cadillac.

Good luck with your high hp, gear drive, tilling machine project.

I think a 1600 is a great idea. I have a 1000 sitting here in need of restoration. I wanted to build a 168 last year, but could only find a 14 hp, so I wound up with a 148. The 1600 should be easier since there are many more 1650s around than 169s for donor engines. With the different PTOs they aren't interchangeable.

You've actually given me a great idea, now. I hadn't thought of going that route, but I think a 1600 would be way cool. If it's used as a mower or a snow plow, the hydraulic lift isn't so important...but....

I've thought about taking a boat trim tab pump and using that to drive a hydraulic lift. It's small, compact, has it's own reservoir, and is 12v. Just need to find a spot to mount it, adapt the hoses, and wire up a switch.

I'll be following your project!

I have to ask, why do you need 16 horsepower to pull a tiller when 10 hp works well?

I put a 14 hp engine in my 108 years ago. When I was young. Not a good move. Years later, I put the 10 back in it and it ran much smoother and much less vibration.

Because you can never have too much power. :biggrin2::biggrin2: NEVER!

Oh yea mo par. Under const as of now, 168 puller, cause that's what i have on hand. Mike:beerchug:

sawdustdad 02-13-2014 09:45 AM

I'm in the "mo par" camp, too. Heck, it's all for fun, anyway. It makes just as much sense as owning 10 cub cadets makes.

When it comes to power "Some is good, more is better, too much is just right" or as the late Mark Donahue once said "If you can spin the tires at the end of the longest straight you have just enough" :biggrin2:
