getting ready for snow throwing

8 Attachment(s)
I realized that the 12" of snow that fell today I would need to bring it up a notch and put the QA42 on the 123 this morning,Now this was only a mowing tractor,so it needed the full package on it,thrower, extra weights, chains, lift arm and a oil change.

Took a few pictures of the process, seems like the wife didn't want to shoot any video, too cold so no action shots but the blower worked well with no belt slippage.

The snow didn't have a chance....

IACubCadet 02-05-2014 08:20 PM

Nice 123 Lew...similar story with my 129...it needed the whole makeover before I attached the QA-36B...

Sam Mac 02-05-2014 08:24 PM

Nice setup but the reason you waited till today to get it ready would be?:bigthink:

Must be a Joisey thing. :biggrin2:

darkminion_17 02-05-2014 08:27 PM

Yeah the wife's like"when are you going to do something today"nag nag... :biggrin2::biggrin2: But she didn't want to do any shoveling today in the snow,so I went to the shack and did the deal.

Looks good Lew :beerchug:

Nothing like a hydro for snow removal, you can always get the perfect speed.

I'm loving the hydraulic lift on the 125 I got from you. Makes lifting the QA42 easy. The WF PTO I put on yesterday works great too. Locks up great and drags the motor down burying the QA42 in the wet snow :biggrin2:

darkminion_17 02-05-2014 08:42 PM

Good to hear, this has a spring assist on it but it is still a bear to lift it.

I was going to put the thrower on the 782 but I realized I needed the larger pulley with the QA36A and the snow was piling up.

Gotta get that going as it has been sitting for 4 years in the same spot .17 horse's will make that snow fly to the next door neighbors driveway :biggrin2::biggrin2:

My former 122 had both the IH spring assist plus the Brinly spring assist, that worked better but hydraulic is the way to go.

12 HP works pretty good, I image 17 HP would be even better

I had this same thought this fall, but never got it done!

Good looking set up Lew. You guys are sure getting your share of the white stuff up there. i need to check with my brother in Albany and see what he's getting. BTW That seat is super nice, still looking for one for my 123.

Jeff in Pa 02-05-2014 09:39 PM

Lew
Looking at your pictures again, I saw you didn't use the quick attach brackets I gave you. Makes attaching the snow thrower/blade/mule drive a single bolt and lock washer on each side. Much, much easier. No fumbling with a bolt, lock washer and nut.

I spent an hour on my 123 today pushing snow/ ice

hydro's rock for that

sawdustdad 02-05-2014 10:44 PM

I don't think Lew's much behind the curve on the snowthrower. I just put mine on the 149 last week for the first time. But it's all rain down here.

ACecil 02-05-2014 11:04 PM

Nice snow removal setup, Lew!

johncub7172 02-06-2014 01:34 AM

That's a great outfit,...a narrow frame IH Cub Cadet 123 with QA36 thrower ! I have the Brinly spring assist on the 71, with the lift rod in the low hole of the lift bracket, and what a improvement over not having anything! Don't get much blade height from the ground, but I don't need that.

Darn good set up Lew!

Cubcrazy 02-06-2014 07:16 AM

Looking good Lew and nice seat!:beerchug:

cubcadet 02-06-2014 07:43 AM

Looks good Lew, I remember that 123 there when I was up.:biggrin2::beerchug:

Running out of room to push it.Another storm coming on monday.

Thanks for the compliments gentlemen,
and Nick...:biggrin2:

J-Mech 02-06-2014 12:50 PM

Sharp 123 Lew! Nice seat too!!
I was wondering why you didn't go with the 782?..... but I see you answered that.
Can't believe you waited till now for a blower. I don't like piles of snow. :biggrin2:
Why the 123? Don't have one with hydraulic lift somewhere? :bigthink:
I made my GF help this last time with snow removal...... she doesn't "nag" about it now. She says, "It's cold out and this sucks!" Reality is the ultimate tool! :biggrin2::beer2:

Jonathan,
we really haven't had a lot of snow up here till the last two storms came, now I needed the thrower to clean up the foot we got yesterday and there is more on the way.
At least the spring assist is on the 123,plus I know it will start, drive, and the pto was rebuilt. The 125 was too hard to move out so the 123 was chosen.Just put in a battery and gas and started right up.

Dremel 02-21-2014 09:27 AM

I have a QA42 and a QA36 that sit on pallets. I've never used them in favor of just a blade, weights and chains. I tried hooking up the 42 and it lasted about 2 seconds before the chain went flying off the sprocket in to the snow and it sounded like it was waiting to kill me. I probably didn't have things adjusted correctly.

Like you we've gotten many feet of snow in the last 2 months. I usually go for the JD 2 stage walk behind blower then go around and clean up with the 149/blade.

Thanks for the inspiration to perhaps give the QA's another try.

Flatbedford 02-22-2014 08:29 PM

I was at work through most of the first big snow this season. I came home to about 9" of wet snow. My 149 with the blade was pretty much useless. The snow was so heavy that with the blade angled, the tractor went sideways and with the blade straight I could only push about 10' until the pile weighed more than the tractor and all forward progress stopped. My other 149 with the QA42A did fine as long as I took smaller bites and didn't go too fast. It would have been miserable if I wasn't on a hydro with hydro lift. These singe stage throwers are much better than most people say they are. You just have to learn how to use 'em.

PaulS 02-22-2014 09:56 PM

I have to agree on those old snow throwers. I used one for many years. I had a 54" haban on my big 2084 and that snow pushed me around even with the super. I took that off and put my 451 two stage on and had no more trouble unless the snow was blown before or was coming over the top then the belt started to squeal and I backed up fast.

Thanks Guys,

The last time I used this I heard a chirping sound coming from the motor so today I checked to see if the head gasket was blown. It was and it must have just happened as there was no oil residue on the fins or on the head.

Cleaned up the carbon, and flattened the head, checked the bore and it still has the cross hatch marks from it still being a newer replacement motor and all.

Gave a run for 15 minutes and will re-torque the bolts tomorrow.

Bring on some snow!!!

cubcadet 03-04-2014 07:28 PM

Very nice work lew as always. New head bolts and all. That is a clean valve.:beerchug:

Good job, Lew!

J-Mech 03-05-2014 02:06 AM

Ahhhhhh, another one fixed! :beerchug:

Flatbedford 03-10-2014 07:57 PM

Lew,
In one of your pictures you are tightening the set screw of the drive shaft. The one on the gearbox end of mine won't stay tight. Is this common? Should I ise a thread locker? Maybe the a new set screw? any suggestions?

darkminion_17 03-10-2014 08:03 PM

They seem to get loose after a while don't they?
Try a new set screw and go from there.
