New to this Board, not to CC. Any other California Cubs out there?
I grew up in Illinois on a CC 108 that my dad bought brand new in 1974. We had a neighbor that I used to do yard work for that had a 122 and 1000 that they bought brand new in 1965 and 1977. Around 200 she gave me the 1000 that I stored at my dad’s house. He used it as a backup for the 108.
Fast forward 13 years and I found myself living in Santa Cruz, CA. We sold our house of 11 years in town and moved up in the mountains above Santa Cruz to a house on 2 acres in Felton, CA last August. I had my 1000 and 44” mower deck shipped out along with some other things my parents stored for me. Sitting on the 1000 brought back so many memories. I am in the process of repairing the damage my ham-fisted younger brother did when my dad loaned him the tractor. Last weekend I picked up a basket case 1450 that came with a 44” deck, a #2 tiller complete with gearbox and belts and a non-IH box scraper. It also had the 3 pt. and IH wheel weights. The tractor runs but it is very rough. It is mostly compete – the hard to find parts are there. The side covers are in excellent shape. I got the entire package for $350. The tiller is in excellent shape for its age so I feel I did alright on this deal. You don't see many Cub Cadets out here so I was glad to get it. I had to drive 2 1/2 hours one way for this deal. I am gathering parts to repair the 1450 and get it ready for tilling. I plan to use the 1000 to mow the lawn. I want to tear the 1450 down and restore it. It sat outside for who knows how long and it looks like it. The 1000 is in better shape but could use a paint refresh too. I would like to restore them one at a time so I have one available for work. I was pretty active with CC tractors about 10 years ago and at the time there was only one board that I knew of. I found that board, this board and one other. There seems to be more information available now than ever before. I want to keep my equipment running long enough for my 1 and 5 year old boys to experience growing up on a CC like I did. I figured I would post this as in introduction. I tend to contribute when I join an organization and I have been lurking here for a week now. I learned so much reading this board an other sub boards. Thanks for everything! I'll snap some pictures of my CC equipment this weekend and post them. Thanks again! Bob Elliott Felton, CA |
Welcome to OCC! Looking forward to your pics this weekend. :beerchug:

Welcome ! Beautiful area you are in. Cost of living is high though. I am on the other side of the country but I lived out there while in the Air Force..
1450s are nice machines.. Here are the 2 that I have. The second one I restored. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psb60b90df.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps9e12bd76.jpg |
Welcome to OCC! Glad to have you!
Looking forward to pics! |

Welcome to the best Cub forum. :beerchug: |
Your second tractor with the plow is what I want mine to look like. I want to put ag tires on it for traction in the dirt. Right now it is nothing to look at and shakes like crazy because of the home made rag joints that have the driveshaft out of alignment. I am looking for a creeper for my 1000 along with other parts so I have one I can work with.
What brand tires did you use and where did you get them? I do live in a beautiful area and the weather is perfect. It is very expensive. There are some very good things about living here. If you can buy a house it will appreciate faster than about anywhere in the country. I grew up in Illinois and I don't miss snow. We were up in Lake Tahoe the beginning of December and it snowed while we were there. That's the first time I saw snow on the ground in 5 years. There is no humidity and no mosquitoes in the summer here. I won't rain from the end of April until November. Normally we get heavy rain in the winter but not this year. It is dry and warm. Two weeks ago it was in the 80°s and this week it is the 60°s and people are complaining about the weather. The reservoirs are empty and we are going to pay for it next summer. I moved to a forested area in the mountains and I am very worried about wild fires this year. I'll snap some pictures of my latest acquisitions this weekend. I am looking forward to taking some pictures of Cub Cadets under redwood trees in my backyard. Bob Quote:

:Welcome2: It is always great to have another member here Bob and it sounds like your interest in cubs is deeply rooted in your childhood! As, others have said, you will get some excellent advice on this forum from very knowledgeable people who share your same enthusiasm about these classic tractors and equipment. Everyone is interested in seeing your cubs, but with all of this arctic temperatures around me and several inches of snow, I'd just like to see some pictures of your side of the country!:biggrin2:

Pictures of the cubs under Redwood trees would be awesome!:beerchug:

Welcome to OCC! I didn't grow up with a 108, but have had one for 35 years, and it's still my favorite.
There are lots of sources for parts--many support this forum, so check the sponsors. Also, see the for sale and wanted forums. Ebay is another place to look for parts, and many cub dealers can order parts. Looking forward to the Redwood framed cub pics! |

Bob,
Wecome to OCC, glad to have you! These pics you are posting are not showing up...... :bigthink: |

This doesn't look good. I think this rim is done. When I removed the left wheel the bearing fell out. I think that means I need a new rim, correct? http://www.cubcadetcollectors.com/fo...e.php?id=10854 The engine was easy to remove because the 2 forward bolts weren't't there. Lower ISOs shot! http://www.cubcadetcollectors.com/fo...e.php?id=10855 Left brake linings http://www.cubcadetcollectors.com/fo...e.php?id=10856 Brake linings 1/16" thick. Replace? |
Can't see them ether.

This link will take you to a video I made showing the steering gearbox slop. The joint between the tube and box flexes. The whole thing is moving. I think I need a new column. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTDcuC80GCY This link will take you to a video I made of teh front axle joint. The front axle has play when you rock it forward and backward. Do I need to shim the axle connection to the bracket? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D69vY949D-0 This link will take you to a video of me rocking the spindle on the front axle. There is excessive play when you rock the spindle up and down. Is there a way to fix this? |
I made a list of what I need to get this tractor running right:
• Mule drive adjustment lever that attaches to the right pulley • Lower grill screen • Headlight panel complete with screen, bulbs, grommets, emblem and mounting screws • Muffler • Front hood casting that the hinge bolts to Front rim (4) wheel bearings Axle play??? Spindle play??? ISO mounts • Fuel tank (I may only need the valve and grommet – I have to measure it) • Air filter complete with engine half including three mounting screws, cover including rubber seal and rubber hose that goes to the blower housing Steering column • Brake safety switch arm • Front and rear rag joints Cooling fan Self-aligning ball bushing on hydro end of driveshaft • Choke cable (looking for one with a black handle that isn’t faded) • Throttle cable (looking for one with a black handle that isn’t faded) • Hydro lever compete with black end (not faded, decent chrome) • Hydro speed stop • Fiberglass dash and tin • Hydraulic lift lever complete with linkage to valve (looking for one with good chrome and plastic) • Key switch • Headlight switch • Tractor wiring harness • Seat • Battery hold-down, complete (2 if you have them) • Tail lights, complete • Brake pads, both sides All 4 tires (non hold air,all dry-rotted and cracked) This doesn't include going through the engine. All my wife wants to know is how much it will cost. |
I had some time after doing some yard work to remove the lift valve. It didn't want to move at first but I got it loosened up. The IPL shows 2 o-rings in the bore but it looks like there are many o-rings in there. Does anyone know if there is a write up on how to rebuild these valves?

Ok guys, that's what I have. Please comment!

Is it ok to post a link to another board?
|
I don't think you can, no. It won't allow you to. Better to upload them, or link them to a photobucket account or something similar.
|
I'll try Photobucket. Stand by
|
I redid the first post from PhotoBucket. Can you see the photos?
|
The first one has some, some not. Kinda odd.
Try doing it to the second post.... |
I will mess with this in the morning.

For me it comes out of my play/hobby fund, which is all I can justify and indeed its great play time! Given your list, you might try to find a parts/donor tractor. All those little things add up (course if you are like me, you will find a donor tractor and then want to fix it also, and not 'don' anything....) |

1450 Update
I got into the 1450 last weekend and this weekend. Here's what I did:
I stripped it down to a rolling chassis. Then I borrowed a pressure washer and cleaned off the crud. After that I split the tractor so I can start replacing parts. Here's the photos: Before: http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps0589d703.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps6d30b460.jpg After: http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psac6bb3e1.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pse107a6be.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps83c7b69e.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps9c2a0c42.jpg Split Tractor: http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps1af27885.jpg I've never split a tractor before. It wasn't that bad. Looks like I need to fix that trunion: http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psb0b3633e.jpg The sector shaft that the trunion is attached to has play side to side. Parts tree shows there is supposed to be a washer behind the trunion bracket. Can I remove the sector shaft without disassembling the pump to get it back in? http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psade5de79.jpg There is a washer missing in this joint that is causing side-to-side play. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps50f2e340.jpg |
Do you think the ISOs were shot?
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps06566a98.jpg Any help with this tractor is appreciated. This is my first hydro and I want to put it back together right. Here's a couple of questons: 1. Is sector shaft side-to-side play acceptable? 2. Can I remove the sector shaft and put it back in without disassembling the pump? Will the swash plate fall if I remove it? 3. Is play between the cam plate and truinon plate acceptable? Thanks in advance, Bob |
Bob,
Wow you have taken on a large project. A this point it seems like a lot of items. I can comment on the trunnion, Yes it will work better if repaired. If you take it apart the corners can be welded and filed smooth to remove the grooves caused by the springs. There is also a quick fix too that just adds two new steel strips ove the grooves. Looking at your list reminds me of the 147R I did:) You might look at that post to give you an idea of the road ahead. Yes lots of parts. And I did have to buy a donor tractor to get some things. But I think your tractor is in better condition than the one I drug home. By the wat some of the early pictures still don't show up but the last ones look fine. Regards, Chris |

Welcome to OCC! What if you told her $3000 and you kept good records and it only cost you $2300 would she be pleased:) I put numbers (guestimates) next to each item on your list, Some may be higher or lower, I did not add them up. You will find twice as many items once you get into it. Lots of little things get worn. Trust me. But I am in no way trying to discourage you! These are great projects and make great tractors when complete. That's my guess after having bee through one of these projects. Still better than buying one of the throw away units at the big box store and your grand kids will be able to use it. Regards, Chris |
