Cleaning Shop

You ever just look at your shop and go "God, how did it get like this?". Then decide to clean it up, but the task seems so overwhelming that you don't get much done? Or am I the only person? I'd post pics but it is embarrassing. :RedFace2::RedFace2:

Know the feeling buddy.
I never let mine go that far:beerchug:

I'm good for trying to pack 10# of you know what into a 5# box which is my garage!:biggrin2:

Sam Mac 12-20-2013 06:09 AM

Yep, I know that feeling.:bash2:

cubcadet 12-20-2013 06:39 AM

I know that feeling, I'm out of room because of you know what.

& I thought it was just me?

My work-bench ALWAYS needs to be cleared. A endless project!

NIK,

The only floorspace left in my shop is pathways.

cadzag72 12-20-2013 10:42 AM

My shop mess was out of control with my 125 resto. I used to be able to fit both cubs and my lo-boy in, right now I can only fit 1!

ACecil 12-20-2013 11:06 AM

I hear ya, Jonathan. My shop needs some cleaning also.

X2.

Keeping the shop cleaned up seems to be harder than the actual work that is done there.

FWIW, this is my "I hate when that happens" thing.

Mine was getting that bad... bad thing is I have a 5000 sqft shop!

Good to know I'm not the only one! Biggest issue is, it isn't profitable for me to spend days cleaning. But, it has become necessary. Maybe I will post some "after" pics. Don't expect any soon...... this is gonna take a while. :biggrin2:

hdsdcouple 12-20-2013 03:21 PM

lol I need a shop

PaulS 12-20-2013 05:56 PM

My 4wd truck sits in the driveway and a bunch of useless junk is in the garage. Just don't make sense.

LOL Paul. My garage at home is that way. Nice car and the truck sit out, cubs and attachments (along with "her stuff" and kids outside toys) is in the garage.

Nope, can't say as though my workshop is messy. I put things back when I'm done with them and am good at organization. I'm not trying to blow my own horn here; I work logistics for a living so it's almost a habit.

gmbadgley 12-20-2013 07:43 PM

I know all to well. When we moved into this place last summer I had to move the garage about 25' to get the home in. So I had No floor (dirt & mud from the rain), no power, and everything just literately got piled in there on Pallets.

I have made enough headway to get an old school Portland/crushed stone floor in. Electrical & lights are in and I built some shelves & a couple of benches heavy enough that I could park the 1450 on if I had to.

Funny thing, I STILL don't have any room!!! :bash2:

I pick up tools and equipment. That really isn't the problem. It's the pile of scrap steel next to the trash can, it's a couple snowblowers, a couple of blades, about 3 cubs, the air compressor and motor scattered about that I bought and was going to fix and flip but then didn't get finished. It's the motor parts lying in a pile that I'm in the middle of rebuilding. The tractor that has been in here for years in pieces that a customer and I both lost interest in, and now is just here. A truck stripped down, sanded bondo'd and almost ready to paint that just isn't done yet. All the equipment that had to be moved to get that truck in the shop area it is in, and is now shoved to the side and in the way. Parts and pieces that were saved for "future use" and just need put on a shelf, but the shelf is full.... Sooooo the shelf needs sorted out. Throw the stuff that has been there for years out, and make room for new.

It's that kind of thing. 5000 sq ft of work space and only maybe 1800 free. Gets old. Need to finish up some stuff that has been in here way too long and get it out. Need to ask some customers if they forgot about that thing they were supposed to pick up, or didn't want to finish "just yet". That kind of mess. :Work:

OK so the answer is SIMPLE, you need at least a 10,000 sq/ft shop!!!! :biggrin2:

Jumper 12-21-2013 10:02 AM

:crap:My wife no longer calls it a shop, just a enclosed junk yard. Every once in a while she gets out the pictures of when we first built it and asks, "Do you remember this ?" I just remind her of my right to remain silent.:Help:

bocephus1991 12-21-2013 11:07 AM

Your not alone Jonathan, I cleaned mine garage a couple weeks ago put things away swept up real good and it looks like a disaster area again now. Having limited space is good that it not as big of an are to clean at least. Having two tractors a large moveable work bench and a 4 wheeler in there does make it kinda tight sometimes. Along with all the tools. Think we all know exactly what your talking about! Good luck with your cleaning!:beerchug:

I'm going to put these two comments together. I actually do need a bigger shop.... or at least bigger doors. Can't get a lot of stuff inside that I work on. It's too bad really. There were two big shops in my town. The one I have and one other. The buildings must have been built by the same company, because the construction is almost identical. Anyway, I tried to buy the other one. It is all open construction on the inside and had a bigger door. The guy said he'd sell it to me in a few years and until then, I could rent the smaller building he had next to it. So I did. Well, it became obvious he had no intention to sell it to me, so I pursued this one. My building has been added on to, so it really is two separate shops with a door between. But the floors aren't the same height, so there is a poor ramp between. Plus, no big doors. The other building would have suited my needs much better. Wish I had it. I don't mean to sound crude, but the guy is old, and never sells anything he has. Kinda a hoarder. He has only one daughter and she kinda takes after him. I was hoping when he dies I could buy it, but I don't even know if his daughter will sell. Sucks. The building just sits there full of his junk.

My wife says "as long as I can park inside I don't care what's in it" (the garage) then gets annoyed when it smells like 1) gas 2) exhaust 3) oil 4) paint. :bash2:
