Was this a factory option or aftermarket? I found two older threads but I really never saw the answer.

As far as I know......solely Aftermarket.

PaulS 12-18-2013 09:46 AM

I have not seen this as an option in any old literature/brochures but then again I have not seen a great number of them.

mmzullo 12-18-2013 10:06 AM

It was listed as an accessory in 1966 according to the accessory catalog. $86.50

Learned something today. Of all the literature I have, I don't have a 1966 Parts & Accessories catalog...

Wish I could buy a set now (including new tires) for $90!

Any day you learn something is a good day. I learn something every time I log onto the forum. Who would think that a garden tractor could be so endlessly fascinating and yet appear to be so simple.:bigthink:

They were a little cheaper in the 1963 parts and accessory book $86.50

Agree! :biggrin2:

The duals give the cubs an awesome look! They look like a big tractor with them.

J-Mech 12-18-2013 11:57 AM

In the parts books, under the title "rear wheels" is shows the dual hubs through the 1X6/7 series. After that I no longer see them. :beerchug:

Interestingly though.... they are in the book for the 127, but not for the 147. They would obviously work.

darkminion_17 12-18-2013 01:09 PM

The 1973 price list has them for $126.00 going up!!
But the 1974 price list does not have them listed. Musta been a liability thing...

Or IH ran the sales numbers and decided the market was not big enough.
Then two tires started to get a lot wider around that time.
Seems like IH really designed a lot of space between the tires to me.
Maybe so the same adapters could be used with the widest rims available?

drglinski 12-18-2013 01:44 PM

They aren't that practical with a blade on, unless it's for moving dirt. Moving snow you'd run over the stuff that's left behind with the blade as the blade needs to be wider than the wheels. I think duals look pretty neat.

I thought they made two widths of spacers. But, in the parts book it doesn't appear so. You don't want duals too close together, or dirt/snow packs into them and won't come out. That's a lot of the reason for the space. Personally I think the people making them now make them too close. Apparently they have never ran a farm tractor. :beerchug:

Lew do you still have them or maybe post dimensions possibly, Allen can't be the only one that has that much fun

That's actually very expensive....in today's prices, that would be over $600! I bought a set of spacer rings that fit in the groove channel of rim and spaces the tires about 3" apart for about $35.00. It's not quite as good as the IH wheel spacers, but a lot easier on the budget and they seal the space between the tires so no mud, snow, or dirt gets in between them.

Just as a note, extrememotorworks sells dual wheel spacers. :beerchug:

I guess Roland and I don't get to town much. My literature is limited to the sales brochures and owners manuals and a couple of repair manuals. I have to agree though that dualies in the snow is a little counter productive as they would run in snow that you want to move. I see this as less of a problem with a blower than a blade but still a problem. Despite the cool factor I will add weight/chains to get traction.

darkminion_17 12-19-2013 10:42 AM

A 54" blade should take care of that

With 6 12's and no fenders, you can reverse the inner set and you could bolt them together or run the spacers and still be narrow enough where the compaction problem is no longer an issue with a 42" blade. It makes for a smoother ride and I've never slipped in the snow with them.
