1450 lift lever?

2 Attachment(s)
While using the 1450 today the lift lever seams to have come unhooked. It just flops back and forth. I'm assuming it just came loose from the control valve. What's the easiest way to get access and what should I be looking for? Does any one have a diagram of the linkage? Thanks, cjet69

Open the hood, remove the side panels and take a look. My guess is #9 or #5 came apart. The valve is clamped to the steering column. You'll probably also need to take the battery out to get at it.

You might have to remove the plate between the engine/fuel tank and the dash to really get a good look I believe. Just 4 bolts.

In my opinion easiest way to get a clean shot at it is to remove the fuel tank. Very easy to do

You guys are right on the money. I removed the dash plate and found the shaft #6 is turning in the lever #4. Is there a set screw in the back of the lever #4? Looks like the shaft has a hole drilled for one. I may have to pull the tank to get in there.

Pull the tank, it's 1000x easier that way. Good luck! :beerchug:

I removed the fuel tank for access and found the pin had sheared off the lever. Will a roll pin work in place of the solid pin?

IHinIN 12-03-2013 06:29 PM

It takes what is called a spirol pin which is like a roll pin but much stronger. A regular roll pin might work for a while but if you can find a spirol pin you won't have to worry about it for a long time.

Where would I get one?

Mcmaster has them, they are not expensive and well worth the wait time. I order stainless because I hate dealing with the rusty spirol pins.

search coiled spring pins "spirol" is a name brand and will not turn up any search results

I get the extra strength 420 stainless, I have been using them in drive shafts with no problems.

I Pulled the other pin in the lift lever shaft. It appears to be a #1 taper pin which I am trying to source locally. The most likely place to have it is closed til Monday. :bash2:

Stuck the extra pin in and everything works good. Just need to button it up and hope for some snow to try it out.

Plow Lift Lever - shaft broke on mine tonight.

Just as I finished plowing our 125-yard lane, my plow lift lever stopped working and flopped down.

I used CJet's photos to figure out how to get to it (eternal thanks for the great photos), but found that my stainless steel roll pin was fine - it was the shaft that snapped! - right at the hole that fits the roll pin.

BTW - Mine had a hollow, stainless steel roll pin - not a solid shearable pin like CJet found in his.

I've got bar stock, a drill press and a rod bender, so I'll fabricate a new handle & rod tomorrow, then see if I can get it back together again in time for the next snowfall...

Did your shaft have a second hole with a pin in it? I was wondering why mine has the other hole and pin.

ALANRUNFELDT 12-17-2013 12:52 AM

Second hole in lift lever

CJet -

Yes, mine had a second hole - about 1/2" further in (to the left as you sit on the tractor.) - just like in your photo. But it was empty - just a hole; no pin in it.

I made my new lever today (expecting snow tonight) and I'm struggling now to put it back in. Damned pin doesn't want to slide through. I can see daylight through the pin, so I know it's lined up, and it went in okay on the workbench, but now the doggone thing just doesn't want to slip back in easily.

Clumsy area to work in, too. I did remove the gas tank and the panel, so I do have access, but darn, it's hard to work in there. Sure wish IH/Cub had thought about us repairing these old beasts when they built them...

Taking a break now; my back is getting stiff. In a minute, it will be back to the task. I can almost taste success, but until that pin gets back in and all the way through, it's still a struggle. My pin, btw is quite long - over 1 1/2".

OK. 'nuff chat. Back to work now.

Found the access hole...

Doggone! As I was taking a break, I glanced at the tower from the seat side... right where I need clear access, there is indeed a 2 1/2" access hole drilled through the front of the tower - to the left of the key switch. Never noticed that before (duh). Would have made it a heck of a lot easier to access that roll pin in the shaft - both to remove as well as to insert.

Oh well, live and learn. Perhaps IH/Cub wasn't all that inconsiderate after all! ;)

cjet69 12-17-2013 02:26 PM

Glad to here its going back together. Hope we get some snow this year so I can try out this blade.
