The O Gets An Aerosol Overhaul

Hey all,

I've been threatening to start on my Original for some time. The kids were off from school and the weather cooperated, so I figured it was time. We bought the tractor for my youngest son since the older son and I use my other "O" for pulling. Son #2 doesn't really want to pull, just look cool riding it around.

There's a show coming up in January and we'd love to have the tractor done in time for that event. So, we started on it today. We both had a great time and the little guy learned "Lefty, loosey, righty, tighty!" What more does he need to know! :biggrin2:

As it stands, the frame is in primer and we'll be working on the rear end tomorrow or the next day. Now, this ISN'T a nut-and-bolt restoration or rebuild, but more of a "let's make this thing presentable so he'll look cool on it!" kind of endeavor. There will be some sanding, sand-blasting, painting and of course, CLEANING. Anyways, here's the pics for today.

so far so good. I like the wheel horse fenders better.

ACecil 11-27-2013 10:43 PM

Good luck on the overhaul! Keep the updates and pics coming.

Paint=$50, Sandpaper = $15, Primer/Cleaner = $25, Time Spent With Son = Priceless!!!! That really went far on the first day and looks like the little guy is having a great time. Keep up the great work. :IH Trusted Hand:

Also, really like the treads on that O!!

Very good progress for the first day:beerchug:
Glad to see your boy helping out.

cubcadet 11-28-2013 06:34 AM

Looks good :beer2:

Alvy 11-28-2013 06:48 AM

Looks great Andy, you guys are making quick work of this one. Everything come apart ok? What paint are you going to use?

C5rider 11-28-2013 07:24 AM

The only spot where there was some real rust was on the dash tower, and since I had that off already before and replaced the rusty bolts with new ones, everything came apart really well. Even the steering wheel popped right off, no puller needed! :beer2:

I'm not sure what paint we'll use on it yet. I've not had very good luck with the "new stuff" that Tractor Supply has in stock, but I'm not sure what else might be found locally.

The TS stuff is pretty sturdy, and shines nice when dry, but we had some issues with sags and some funny happenings while it was still wet.

Hoping to have this one ready for the January Flywheelers!

vartz04 11-28-2013 10:28 AM

I had very good luck with the Valspar Rattle cans on my 104

C5rider 11-28-2013 06:49 PM

No pics :bash2:

But I got my steering column rebuilt and primed. Along with all of the steering rods.

I got most of the heavy sanding done on the fenders but I have to do a little bodywork before primer. I've also got some sand blasting to do on the grille before I can prime that.

Sanded a little on the rear but that'll take about a day's focus to really get it ready for paint. Little by little!

4SPEED 11-28-2013 10:35 PM

im doing my 1650 in all TSC paint , and rattle cans. I want to see the longjevity of the paint. I paint show cars so I know the diffrence in the quality.

4-Speed,

Then maybe this might help and here is the best way that I can say about what I've found with the "New" paints at TSC.

If you've ever painted the old synthetic enamel, think of this stuff as the complete opposite. Maybe its because they're going to some new low-VOC forumula or something, but the stuff just didn't seem to have the consistency that I was accustomed to.

Once it dried, I've found it to be durable. Just getting it ON the part and keeping it there seemed a little delicate to me. Please share your experience with it when you get the opportunity!

OldAndInTheWay 11-29-2013 08:54 AM

I'm gonna do my O with rattle cans but I will be doing it in a real painting facility (friends) and will do the primer with a gun and final clear coat also with a gun. I hope they can help me get the best results using cans.

They do really high end painting of classic cars there. They are laughing at having my cub done there. I told them it is really classing up their place.

4SPEED 11-29-2013 11:50 AM

yes , the only thing I see bad about it is all the light coats you have to use. it'll sag and run if your not watching. looks like crap untill it flashes and flows out good like an egg shell coat or like auto 2k sealer.
Id really like to see how it lasts in the sun. most all cans dont have a UV product in them and fades quick.
I to, am thinking about clearing over the sheet metal bits. urithane clear is 10 times harder then oil paint with hardener. rattle cans can use hardener. or it harden in the can .

C5rider 11-29-2013 06:40 PM

I did a little painting today on the grille and a few "hard to reach" areas. I'm using some of the Majic stuff that TSC has on the shelves for the dusting areas. Then I have more of the Valspar stuff that they used to have at TSC, which will get the lion's share of the top coats.

i painted the grille insert with Majic IH white. It does flow out good but I will suggest that you shake, shake, shake, shake and shake some more on every can you spray. I'm not sure how long all of my paints were sitting around, but that "may" have been some of the issue when I painted my wheels. It seemed like the stuff didn't cover hardly at all. This time, two coats covered pretty well but that first coat has to be pretty thin or it'll run like a cockroach sprayed with turpentine! Looked good when I closed up shop, but then again, it was getting dark so... :biggrin2:

If everything goes well tomorrow, I'm hoping to have all the yellow painted. One thing I did notice was that this stuff dries SLOOOOOOW! Thankfully, we live in FL. It should dry pretty well by June 4th!

Hope to have pics tomorrow!

C5rider 11-30-2013 03:03 PM

Got some stuff done today!

Most everything that should be yellow-- is yellow!

I still have to do some work on the fenders and I still have to paint the hood, but everything else is a nice, new shade of yellow. I'll get the hood and fenders and engine finished sometime this week.

Of course, here's the pix.

How about all the bolts to put it back together? I put my bolts back where they came from and bead blasted them with the part. I will have them there when I paint also.

C5rider 11-30-2013 03:29 PM

I've toiled over whether or not to re-use the bolts. Most likely, I'll run down to the hardware store and get what I need since many of them were pretty rusty where you'd see them. Plus, I'd already replaced some of them a while back.

My brother about freaked when I suggested putting in store bought bolts, something about IH markings and all. :biggrin2:

Like I said, most of them were so badly rusted that the IH isnt' even a consideration. Plus, I've never been a "numbers and paint codes" kinda guy. Why start NOW! :biggrin2:

OldAndInTheWay 11-30-2013 03:40 PM

Mine are all in good shape. That is why I am going to reuse them. I have access for all bolts for free if I need to replace any. Even Stainless. :biggrin2:

But I don't think I will bling it up too much. Maybe a new chrome acorn nut for the steering wheel. OH, I am getting a new steering wheel. There is a product that will fill the cracks and I could repaint the old one but I think I will make a clock out of it..

:beerchug:

4SPEED 11-30-2013 03:44 PM

:beerchug:There's just something about freshly painted parts. Lookin good!!!!!!

Alvy 12-01-2013 07:58 PM

That's super nice Andy. Did you do any body work at all or is that just primer and paint? And I know what you're talking about with the majjic paint. Mine sagged quite a bit on my rims and other areas with the white and yellow. I'm thinking it's a combination of too much layed down at once on my part and the old Florida humidity during the summer. Yours looks amazing though, great job buddy!

C5rider 12-01-2013 10:31 PM

thanks guys!

Here's a couple of today's progress.

Alvy, I haven't done too much body work but that's about to change with the hood and fenders. There's a few holes in the fenders and the hood is a little wavy up toward the front.

I have to paint the clutch and driveshaft and do a quick touch up of the engine before placing it on the frame. I may get a few chances this week to work on that stuff, we'll see how life flows out.

Here's the pix!

Hardware adds up quick from most hardware stores, but I also like to go with new stuff over the really rusted up stuff. Especially on threaded holes where a broken off bolt would ruin your day.

Tractor Supply Co. sells their hardware by weight, and I always come out ahead buying from them.

Paint looks GREAT.

Nice work on the Original, good pictures too! It has been my experience when painting the rear rims, to have paint sag of slightly run. Now if the weather was warm up here like it is down there, I'd be right along with my tractor project as well!

LOL! Yes, we are blessed. We're right in that glorious moment of time of NO MOSQUITOES!

Hope to keep the momentum this week, but we'll see how life doles out the minutes.

thanks!

Got a few daytime shots of the work so far. Foot rests are on, various other bolts and tidbits. Now I need to attack the seat bracket and the hood!

You are moving right along with this project. I can't believe how bright that paint is!

OldAndInTheWay 12-02-2013 04:11 PM

I'm torn between putting ags on the back of mine or using the original ones that is on mine now. They are not in too bad shape. Seeing yours makes it harder! :bigthink:

MiniMo 12-02-2013 08:05 PM

That's turning out pretty nice. So that's majic or Valspar?
