Worth the wait 108

So my dad called me early this morning and said he had a surprise for me. An older guy back home (upstate NY) who has a big collection asked him at breakfast if I was still into cubs and my dad said yes. Soon after he was down by his barn calling me to ask if I wanted a 1315 or a 108. I of course said the 108. Ritchie had let me see the collection once before a couple years ago which he probably has 30 or so cadets, tons of implements, a couple low boys, and a few farmalls. He even has a grafted together Original that he built years ago that has 2 K161's mounted in front of eachother with a long seamless hood over the whole stretched out tractor, pretty cool. Anyway, I'm on cloud nine now after seeing the pics my dad sent, it has a deck, wheel weights, and wait for it........creeper! This is my first wide frame and cant wait to see it when it makes its way to the sunshine state in November. I'm truly thankful for my Dad for getting this done and Ritchie as well for his generous gift. Heres some pics.

awesome......hope you enjoy it!

Wow Alvy! That is one of the nicest, green stripe 108 I have seen yet! For some reason, I don't see too many of those garden tractors. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this was the first model IH started to use the black paint starter generators on. I'll be darn, heck of a nice tractor!

If you don't mind me asking, was there something different about the green stripe versions? I also have a green stripe model and would like to know what might be special about it?

Again, great find and really nice of that guy giving it to you. Is you're dad going to trailer it down to you?

Sure there was garnold! As I have said, the 1x8/1x9 series wide frame IH Cub Cadets were the first series garden tractor to go to a painted starter generator in black. { please understand we see Alvy's 108 with no starter generator mounted }I also state my personal feelings { being a true, die hard IH Cub Cadet loyalist } about why I believe topic series garden tractor is a rare one to come across. The reader should respectably understand the writer is referring to his/her part of the country.

I also, believe the model 72, and 73 are a very rare model of IH Cub Cadet garden tractor. These were the ONLY two model tractor to use this style dash tower. Unlike the Cub Cadet { later became known as the Original } built from 1961 - 1963, and the 70/100, and along with the model 71 from the 1x2/1x3 series garden tractors that; all used the specific dash tower for a longer period of time. It is my personal feelings that models 108, 109, 72, and 73 can be considered rare.

I try not to spread a lot of b/s, and most always have something positive to comment on. I'm not in to childish debate, but adult only. :biggrin2:

Thank you for this information. I don't want to hijack this thread and talk about my cub. Even more because the thread owner is so excited about his cub and should be because it rocks! I'll have to do some more research on this and start up a thread. Again, thank you for the information :-)

cubcadet 09-27-2013 03:53 PM

wait it was free, u gotta be kidding me :biggrin2::bigeyes:

Alvy 09-27-2013 08:26 PM

Feel free to hijack away guys and thanks for the kind words. I'm learning a lot about these things every day. I'm in assembly mode of my 73 fix up and to learn about the 108 being another rarer one is pretty cool. Yeah it's missing the starter generator and air filter/cover too.

And yes my dad knows a guy who's coming to Florida in November with a trailer and I have to travel about an hour and a half to get it but that's nothing compared to the 22 hours it will take to get down here. My dad is coming to Florida too like he does every year but has already committed to bringing down one of those backwards trike looking motorcycles in a trailer. I'm super excited to see it in person and always good to learn more about a series that's new to me. It's harder to find old cubs down here in FL and if I have to import them from back home I will do it! Thanks everyone for the words and info.

Alvy 11-12-2013 11:11 PM

Well I got to pick up the 108 this past Sunday. Had to drive almost 2 hours but well worth it since it was "imported" from NY. :biggrin2: needless to say the guy who brought it down had it on a trailer at his house with some much bigger Kubota tractors and couldn't stop telling me how he thought I was crazy to go through all the hassle to get it and what a piece of junk it was (I will refrain from using the real word he used) anyway, I smiled at him and thanked him, loaded it up, and drove home. This is my first wide frame and I gotta say I'm loving it already. I rebuilt the carb which was full of rust, swapped a s/g from my 123 because its missing from this one, soaked the cylinder with mmo for a little bit, files the points to get spark, got her fired off and had to run away because there was so much debris flying out of every opening it was crazy!! it didnt look like it had run for at least ten years. and Now i gotta say after some fine tuning this one runs the best I've seen from mine, no smoke, smooth.Gathering some parts each day, already put some tie rods on, took off some weird l channel PO mod deal that was bolted to the rear diff cover, took off the mule and deck, and just seeing what's good and bad. This is my first creeper tractor and I love it, don't even have to push in the clutch to put it in gear it just goes in low from a dead stop at idle, like my jeep in 4L! Anyway I will post pics soon but the bottom line is im excited to finally get it down here and sometimes I don't even waste my time trying to explain my new hobby and addiction to some jabrones who are nay sayers, its a cub thing, they just won't understand!

MinnesotaCadet 11-12-2013 11:27 PM

Nice find! I have to start making connections like that.

ACecil 11-12-2013 11:57 PM

Glad you're loving the 108!

cubcadet 11-13-2013 07:25 AM

Glad it runs good and u like it:beerchug:

sawdustdad 11-13-2013 08:31 AM

Excellent, glad you got it running.

Yes, my dad had a friend do a favor who is a tractor dealer and he has a winter house about 2 hours from me. I think I win the award for furthest distance to get a cub although I didn't do the driving.

I don't know....Ol' George is halfway around the world, but I am not for sure where he got his cubs from......I think either France or USA.....not for sure!

So it's been a couple of years since I've had this. Got a bunch of missing oarts from members like Lew and Ironman. It's been at my neighbors for over a year as he blew up his crapsman. Well this weekend while he was mowing sparks started flying out if the side behind the engine. Turns out the blower housing screen broke off and was getting ground up. Well next thing You know, engines out and apart and I'm buying parts from Don and ebay and then saying, well, probably needs the clutch redone, probably needs the fenders off for a good cleaning, creeper, yatta yatta. Looks like this is my next refurb. Needs a lot, frame was cut in the back, two plates were welded on the steer axle channel with the giant bolt through it. Lots of cutting and welding on this one. Will try to take more pictures but I never do for some reason.

Me too pal. Luckily it's just the straight part of the frame on both sides so I will make it look purdy me self or at least try

jaynjeep 08-11-2015 12:09 AM

Looking good Mike!! Glad to see you have helpers that are learning!

I picked up a nice 128 the other day. Close cousin to your 108.

Don't you just love it when you find hack job repairs and firewrench holes??!

Im sure you will make the repairs look like new!

Good luck with it!.. keep the pics coming!
