O cosmetic refresh

Got the old girl up on the lift to give her a little TLC. Don’t think I’m going to do a total restore at this point but at least a rattle can freshen, it seems to be in good condition except for the deck. Gotta dig up some pulleys, one spindle shaft and some new bearings.

Looking forward to your updates, Sam!

Looking forward to the progress! Saw an "O" deck on CL for $100..... didn't have a pic.

Hi, still at it huh, Sam. Might as well start at the beginning, with an O. Onward Mike.:beerchug:

Sam Mac 08-28-2013 09:44 PM

Got a set of pulleys for the deck and a spindle shaft. Now I need to pick up 4 bearings and put it back together.

Cub-N-It 08-28-2013 09:46 PM

Looks good Sam. I guess you can see I got another Cub this Summer. The Cub Cadet bug bit me again :)

It's been a while since I did anything on the O but today I got started with the disassembly. So far not one problem. Pics of the progress.

You know how it goes, before you know it, it turns into one of those out of control projects. I don't know yet how stupid I will get with this one. It won't be a museum quality resto job that I can assure you.

I've heard it called "mission creep". Good luck with it!

Yep the mission creep has started. Pulled the steering column out, it needs work. It's soaking in the parts washer. Pulled the clutch out, the friction material was cruddy, the disks were cruddy, explains the slipping in 3rd gear. Cleaned them up and did the 220 grit wet sand paper on a sheet of glass to get them nice. It's getting a new bearing at the end of the drive shaft, new oil seals for the axles (one is leaking) new cover gasket for the rear, new drive belt. So far that's all I've found wrong. Stood it on end and pressure washed the underside to make working on it a bit nicer.

Alvy 07-17-2014 07:09 PM

Nice work Sam. You may already know this but you can get SKF seals 10049 for cheap at your local seal place. I got some bushings real cheap too that I had to drill for the grease hole but they are working good. Good luck with the reseal.

cubcadet 07-17-2014 07:30 PM

Nice work Sam.:beer2:

olds45512 07-17-2014 07:59 PM

those fenders look to be in real good shape, good luck with the project.

Thanks for the tip on the seals Alvy

Olds the fenders are in great condition just the standard broken base where the lift rod would come through it. Mr. Miller can fix that. One broken reflector.

Good deal Sam, keep up the good work! The Original looks clean to start with. I've similar plans for the white on my 1450.

Rdrnek 07-18-2014 01:30 AM

I don't know Sam I thought it looked pretty good before.
I'm sure its going to look great when you are done though!

It was in pretty good condition to start with but it had some light rust under the battery area and I wanted to get it before it started to pit the steel. Overall I'm very happy with it's condition. It has been well taken care of.

cubcadet 07-18-2014 08:11 AM

Very nice Sam. It sure has.

sawdustdad 07-18-2014 09:02 AM

Sam, that's one of the best looking un-restored Os I've seen. Looking forward to following your repairs.

Sam Mac 07-18-2014 10:10 AM

It looks like it's been redone at least once before. Things that I expected to be worn are nice and tight. Worst part was the deck. I'm looking for a nice deck shell for it. I rebuilt the deck last fall but the shell has patches on the patches and plenty of Bondo. Figure when I find a good shell I'll just pull the spindles and other parts off it and swap them over. Once it done I'm planning on trying a dry cell battery in it, I'm tired of the damage that acid does to these things. Used to have one in my race car. Here is some info on them.

During the winter I'd put it in my hard to start 1210, it cranked it over better than any battery I've ever used.

I also like the size of these batteries. From what I can see in the pictures they seem a little smaller. It's not like I plan to put a set of golf clubs under the seat or under the hood but a little extra room here and there is always nice :)

Pulled the front axle, cleaned and adjusted the steering box and ordered parts. Starting to think I got the deal of the century on this one. It's starting to look like it hardly got used and was garage kept. I am one very Happy Camper. :beerchug:

I was gonna say, Sam. Not quite where a "restoration" meant a little water, but it doesn't look like a lot of tools would be necessary either! :beer2:

Lookin' good!

I wish some of the later Cyclops I've worked on where in 1/2 this good condition. This little guy is giving me a whole new respect for the "O".

Maybe I will bring my O to Galax when I get started on it, so I can get some of your good luck (God knows I will need it). :biggrin2:

Looks good so far, my friend!! :beerchug:

Got a little more done. New axle seals are in. Easy job. Clutch is back together. Now it's time to start painting parts and putting it back together. I'm going to use Dupli-Color rattle can school bus yellow. Gotta order a set of decals from Maple Hunter today. I'll try to get some pics later. I know the drill, pics or it didn't happen. :biggrin2:

Looking good bud!

dbuck 08-01-2014 09:53 AM

:Morning: Looking good. The very first CC I owned was an O. Cut a lot of grass with that O. Had it at a steam show using it to pull my butt buggy around and a fellow approach me about selling it. I shot him a high number, he said let me think about it and took my phone number. The very next day he calls and said I will take it. Every time I see an O either in person or on a forum, I wish I had it back. Maybe some day I will get another one. :American Flag 1:

Pics of todays progress. You'll notice that it didn't have any paint under the mounting points for the clutch so I'm convinced that this one has never been apart. Anyway primed and painted the underside and clutch. The Dupli-Color dry's FAST. I plan on getting the clutch back in it tomorrow then I can get onto the stuff that will show. First 3 pics are before painting.
