Uhh should this be possible?

Ok, I hooked the 54" blade up to the 1050 today to do a little playing. Well, as evening rolls around, the transmission doesn't feel...right. Next thing I know, 1st and 3rd gear are switched! Reverse and Second still work just fine, but 1st and 3rd gear are...reversed. :bigthink: The gear level throws farther right and left than it used to, than it should, but really? 1st and 3rd switched? Any ideas, guys?

J-Mech 08-10-2013 07:00 PM

No, I don't really think that is possible. But, you do have to pull your shifter cover now. Something inside goofed up. Either the end of the shifter is worn, or you got the detents messed up. :bigthink:

I'm thinking its linkages but I've never pulled the shift cover before so I'm not sure what I'm in for. guess I'll play it by ear :biggrin2:

cubs-n-bxrs 08-10-2013 07:39 PM

Sounds like the inside of the shifter tower is broken to me.:bigthink:

Makes sense, I noticed when its in 2nd or reverse it'll move side to side all the way like its not in gear. is this a very big deal to fix? I'm hoping its something that can be remedied by just removing the shifter and replacing what's needed.

V30crewcab 08-10-2013 08:49 PM

not sure why its shifting that way, that doesn't sound possible, but my 1050 had the shifter welded back together inside when I got it. I had to heat it up and bend it since they didn't get it straight and it was rubbing on the left side.

rweaver 08-10-2013 09:31 PM

I would say its time for another shifter

rweaver, ygpm.

On a side note, I looked up a couple parts and it appears that the Shift Guide and two bell housing gaskets are no longer available! :bash2: I don't know for sure if I NEED them yet, but while I was in there I was going to replace them anyway. Anybody know where I could get my hands on them? J-Mech, heres's your challenge :biggrin2:

J-Mech 08-11-2013 09:34 AM

I'll see if I can find them, but first, I was informed, I have to cook breakfast! Lol. Honestly, gaskets are too easy to make to worry about buying if they don't offer them.

J-Mech 08-11-2013 02:29 PM

I'm sure you are taking about the gasket at the shifter. Number 12 in the diagram. I would just make one. No reason to chase that part down as easy as it would be to make it. If it was a large gasket, it would be a little tougher, but that one is easy. :beerchug:

I was talking more about the shift guide, #11 in the diagram. You're right, gaskets are easy enough to make, but that shift guide :biggrin2: I need to get it apart to be sure what all I need but I'm kinda figuring on the shift lever and shift guide so I'm wanting to track those parts down now so I don't have to when I find I'm going to need them anyway. Besides, might not be till next weekend before I can tare into it to see so I'd rather have my bases covered sooner rather than later. Anyway, I haven't been able to find a shift guide unless someone has a trash tranny they'll pull it out of. Like I said, here's your challenge of the day from me :biggrin2::beerchug:

Going to replace the drive shaft as well while I'm going to have it torn down a bit because I noticed the shaft has a bit of wobble to it and I don't like that. Going to order one from Brian Miller for like $25 plus shipping so that's an easy one.

J-Mech 08-11-2013 03:47 PM

Tear it down and see what you need first. You may not "need" anything, just repair what is there. I've had a lot of different types of shift towers apart, sometimes, the end of the shifter is just worn, and you weld it up, then it's good to go! Sometimes...... everything is just shot, then, you fix it, or find used, or new. I know you want the parts there and ready, but that really isn't a good way to do something like this. You may end up with $$$$ parts you don't need. Just tear it down and post pics, and we'll go from there! :beerchug:

The weld between the ball and the shifter is broken. Fix or replace it. Had the same issue on my 71 after I welded it back together I beefed it up with a washer that I notched and welded the whole thing together.

Doesn't seem to be too bad of a fix then but the only problem is I don't have a welder or even a friend with one. And when I've called local shops they either aren't interested in such small tasks and the ones that are have a week or more waiting list. Last time I tried to get something simple welded back together (NF Sub Frame) I was told a couple weeks buy a local small engine shop.

So what I'm going to do is get a used one and hang onto this broken one. I'll drop it off at a shop and whenever I get it back I get it back. I'll most likely keep it as a spare but if I happen to see someone who needs one I may sell it. But I think I'm getting ahead of myself, though :biggrin2:

Go to one of our sponsors at the top of the page. Order a shifter for your tractor. It will be fairly inexpensive. Or place a wanted ad for the same shifter. It will probably be cheaper than paying someone to weld it, IMHO.

This is an easy fix. Or, at least, an easy find.

Yep cost me about 50 cents to fix my shifter.

Well, I talked to Ryan and told him I'd help him with his shifter problem. So, he shipped it to me. Took it apart and repaired it. It had been broken for quite a while and the shifter cup was a little misshapen. Took a little longer than I thought it would but, it's all good now! I know how everyone likes pics, so here are the pics of the repair! Hope you enjoy and helps someone in the future!

Got the shifter.

Used an automotive door spring compressor to compress the spring and get it off. If you want this tool, they can be purchased at an auto parts store.

Attachment 41055Attachment 41056

Bead blasted all the parts. Just because they were so rusty, and it makes things easier to weld.

Attachment 41057

Took time out to make a new gasket. Ryan had said they were no longer available, and I have tons of gasket material laying around. Here's a little info, I use a hole punch for the bolt holes. (If they are small holes.) A 3-ring punch has a notched plunger and works better than a single hole punch that is flat.

Attachment 41058Attachment 41059Attachment 41060

As you can see, the cup was also cracked. Drilled the end of the crack and welded both. Ground it down, and polished it.

Attachment 41061Attachment 41062Attachment 41063

Then started the fitment of the cup back to the shaft. This is where it was a little hard. It had been broke a while and didn't fit right, and the cup had changed shape slightly. A little heat, a small ballpean hammer and it was golden again. Welded it on top, ground and polished it. Then welded the bottom.

Attachment 41064Attachment 41065

Reassembled with grease on the inner and outer cup, hung and painted it!

Attachment 41066Attachment 41067Attachment 41068

Now, we wait for Ryan to get it in the mail and show us the install!! :beerchug:

Nice job! The one I did on my 71 I added a washer to the inside and welded it all together to beef it up an eliminate the flexing.

I had heard you say that before. I hope that by not doing it, it's fine. I filled it with quite a bit of weld on the inside. Plus, it's welded both sides now. :beerchug:

All I have to say is wow  That looks incredible! I can't wait to get it back and installed, looks like it's better than new! A big thanks to J-Mech for going above and beyond on this one, I'll be sure to post plenty of pics when I get it back and installed. :beerchug:

Well gentleman, an update. I got the part back from J-Mech and the weekend allowed me time to get some work done. Here's a few pics of the installation of the newly fixed/painted shift lever. A big thanks goes out to J-Mech for his help on this and the quality of his workmanship; all I have to say is I'm very impressed. Once installed, she shifted like a new Cub, sooo smooth into every gear. From the feel of it, she's been breaking/broken for quite some time. Thank you, and enjoy! :beerchug:
