k241 back fire

Hey guys. I just got my k241 into my pulling tractor. And I adjusted the carb and it idles fine. Once I get to half throttle it back fire and kills everything. The only thing done to it is .040 off the head. What could be my problem??

J-Mech 07-11-2013 02:36 PM

Sticking intake valve, intake valve not sealing, timing incorrect, timing may need advanced because of higher compression, running too lean......... your going to have to do some diagnosis. Way too broad of a question. Backfire through the intake is usually too lean. Backfire through the exhaust is too rich. MORE INFO PLEASE!

could be an ignition issue to. do you have the stock coil on it? there's a + & - on the coil. - side should go to the points and the condenser should be on the - also.

Plowboy1086 07-11-2013 02:55 PM

the its got the stock coil. and it back fires out of the stack

Plowboy1086 07-11-2013 03:01 PM

i dont know if this will help. but the high speed needle 2 turns out and the idle mixture needle is 2 1/2 turns out

austin8214 07-11-2013 03:02 PM

Check your carb settings. Go through the manual and set the carb up as it describes.

Plowboy1086 07-11-2013 03:07 PM

thats what it told me to set it to. i dont know it idle fine. just when i give it some throttle it dies and kills my electric. my flick switch wont even glow

austin8214 07-11-2013 03:11 PM

Check your grounds and other electrical connections.

These are just "preliminary" settings ..... you have to tune it to suit your engine. It's not a "set it and leave it" setting... If it's backfiring out the stack TURN THE FUEL DOWN and see if it helps.

Plowboy1086 07-11-2013 03:35 PM

ok will do thanks

Plowboy1086 07-11-2013 03:57 PM

how many teeth timing advance we talking about?

Did the carb adjusting not help?

I took that to mean his lighted two position ignition switch would not glow. Which is why I would recommend going over all the electrical connections with a fine tooth comb. My guess is when the engine RPM increases he is losing a ground due to the vibration. But I could be wrong.

That sounds likely, and reasonable.

Plowboy1086 07-11-2013 06:14 PM

Austin8214 you could be right. Last night we wired up my kill switch and yanked it out a few times. My guess is last night we didn't snap it in. Snap it in and got my electric back

J-Mech 07-11-2013 06:18 PM

:Forgot: :biggrin2:

Plowboy1086 07-11-2013 06:21 PM

Thanks for all the help guys haha

J-Mech 07-11-2013 06:29 PM

You should still dial your carb in......

austin8214 07-11-2013 07:35 PM

:IH Trusted Hand:Agreed make sure you fine tune your carb and set your RPM.

Plowboy1086 07-11-2013 08:26 PM

Will do. Thanks for the help guys

austin8214 07-11-2013 09:07 PM

Anytime ... glad it was something simple.

Plowboy1086 07-12-2013 12:21 AM

Jwin what did k241s come from factory with the governor set to. 4000??

J-Mech 07-12-2013 12:31 AM

3600 RPM High idle, no load.

Plowboy1086 07-12-2013 12:59 AM

Ok ill need to adjust that screw too. Thanks

Plowboy1086 07-12-2013 11:25 AM

Maybe you all can help me again.I can't get my motor to go to full rpm without stage staging it. If not it has a huge delay

J-Mech 07-12-2013 11:28 AM

You mean if you "cob" it wide open it dies? Misses? Chokes? ..... :bigthink:

I still don't think you have the carb adjusted right. Are you sure the timing is correct?

austin8214 07-12-2013 01:19 PM

Yep..you have timing and fuel issues. What is your points gap set at? Also your going to want to check the club rules to see what RPM they allow. Your not going to want to set max at 3,600 if 4k is allowed. However DO NOT turn more than 4k if you still have the stock flywheel on it.

Plowboy1086 07-12-2013 01:37 PM

yeah i know. i adjusted the carb some more an its working now. and i can run 4000 in my class. the points gap is what ever stock is. i have no idea

Plowboy1086 07-12-2013 01:39 PM

wish my buddy corey would listen to me. hes pushin 4900 on his cast iron flywheel

I hope he has a blow shield around it, if not ask him how he would like to go through life missing his feet. All for what $60.00?

Plowboy1086 07-12-2013 01:46 PM

yeah he wont listen. and no he aint got one. its just a stock k301 thats been honed he dont care though.

austin8214 07-12-2013 02:17 PM

Stay clear of his tractor when its running. That is total disrespect for everyone around. He may not care if it blows up and takes his foot off but what about the others around. What if it hits some small child? Your friend needs his butt kicked. Sorry that is just wrong. /Rant

You are going to want to check your points gap. I run mine on my pullers at about .022 you may even consider buying a new set of points.

Plowboy1086 07-12-2013 02:43 PM

I wanna get the 32oz chevy points. What do you think about them??

J-Mech 07-12-2013 03:07 PM

Even if he was my buddy, I'd kick his butt..... and tell the people in charge of the pull what he's doing. I'm sure it's not against the rules, but its unsafe!! :Choke:

austin8214 07-12-2013 03:47 PM

Chevy points are not worth it on a governed motor. Just go to your local Kohler engine dealer and pick up a set.

Plowboy1086 07-12-2013 03:54 PM

If i can get the points for free from my uncle should i take them? the chevy points that is. And yeah ive thought about it. ive caught him in some lies haha.

austin8214 07-12-2013 04:28 PM

Unless you have the bracket that allows you to use them you'd be wasting your time with the chevy points.

Plowboy1086 07-12-2013 04:52 PM

oh ok. im getting picked up in about an hour to go to my moms. i might hook chains to a gravely haha see if i got anything on him. then in two weeks is the pull some guys cried about it so they moved it to the 27th

Plowboy1086 07-17-2013 01:15 AM

Ok. So no pull this year. But I was wondering. My motor has k241 sheetmetal but has k301 molded into the block. Do I have a 12hp instead of a 10hp?

J-Mech 07-17-2013 12:49 PM

Doubt it, but some of the 10HP's have that on them.... I have one that does.
