Lets talk oil

I got my new tires for my 104 and it said lets change the oil in motor and tranny after cleaning the sludge in the tranny I need to know what oil you guys use in your motor and tranny. The book said SAE30 but what brand you guys use. I'm getting the oil tomorrow.

You're going to get a LOT of the same answer on what fluid to run in your tranny, and that same answer is going to be hy-tran. And before you research for hours, the biggest thing that separates hy-tran from other tranny fluids is it's ability to trap and encapsulate moisture, that's probably what that sludge you cleaned out was. Only downside is hy-tran is pretty expensive.

As far as engine oil, SAE 30 is what you're going to want (as long as it's not below freezing). I use low-ash CC SAE 30 oil from my dealer because it's readily and easily available, runs me about $13 per oil change (that's for 2 quarts). If that's not available, just find some SAE 30 from a reputable brand, a lot of people recommend Shell Rotella SAE 30 and I may switch to that during my next oil change cycle because it's cheaper price wise, I can get it at Wally World by the gallon, and the quality is there.

Hope this helps, and good luck. Oh, btw, my charge is pics of your machine :biggrin2::beerchug:

You can use Hy-Tran or 30wt oil. I'd use Hy-Tran though.

Is hy-trans the same as hydro oil?

ok, I might get some flak on this but I run 15w-40 in all my equipment and tractors, never had a single issue what so ever, its also amsoil which helps dissipate heat which these kohler make a lot of. I have it in my 682,123,122, and soon to be in my 1450 when I decide to, plus in the bigger tractors and equipment. as far as hydros and gear drives yes hy tran is the best choice

For the past several years I have been using Cub Cadet Low Ash 30WT and Kohler 30WT without any problems in my K301.

This year picked up a 782 with a KT17 II which has Shell Rotella 15W40 in it. Ran fine and did not burn any oil. I recently changed the oil, added a oil filter and put in Amsoil SAE 10w-30/30WT 4 cycle oil. This oil is marketed to be a synthetic straight 30WT oil that has the viscosity of a 10w30 oil when cold.

Between the hot summer temps and my hilly yard I wanted to protect the KT17 as best I could. So far so good.
