Hey guys, how's everyone out there in CC land? I really don't think this is a dumb question, I just feel dumb asking it. I have a 149 & I can't find where to check/fill the hydro oil. I've looked on the tractor & in the book but no luck. I assume the drain plug for the hydro would be somewhere on the bottom but I haven't looked for that either.

I know the hydro calls for HyTran oil but I haven't had any luck finding it. What are the equivalents to HyTran as in brand name? Also what filter is best to use for the hydro? I'd appreciate any help, I haven't used the tractor since I bought it, now I'm trying to get it in shape to do a little work.

Thank you Roland, I didn't realize they were setup like a big tractor, that makes it simple.....

HyTran is available at any CaseIH agricultural dealer. Cub Cadet dealers sell it too, as hydrostatic oil, but it is very expensive in quarts. I would have to check to be sure, but I think New Holland dealers have it as well, under a different name.

There are other oils that claim to meet the Hytran spec, but one thing is certain: HyTran works. If this was my tractor, I would use dirty Hytran, rather than new of somebody else's oil.

Be sure to use a quality hydraulic filter spec'ed for your tractor with Hytran.

WildBill once told me to take along a clean 1 gallon jug. The CaseIH dealer might be selling bulk, and you would get it at a lower cost that way.

I bought a 5-gallon bucket, which is perfect for my two Cubs. I believe they also sell 1-gallon jugs and maybe a 2.5 gal. The 5-gallon bucket was $78, but as mentioned above, buying 7 quarts from a Cub Cadet dealer will be even more per quart.

I did cut corners on my 882 and use the Hytran substitute from Tractor Supply a few years ago, but it's due for a change and the real stuff is going back in this time. I'll probably do a video on what the TSC brand looks like after use.

I can verify that, at least locally, our New Holland dealer sells actual Hy-Tran under the name, Hy-Tran. That makes sense because New Holland bought Case IH many years ago.

I guess my poor old 125 just doesn't know enough to lay down and die. Been running Napa brand hydraulic oil as well as TSC's brand for almost 30yrs and the old girl still kicks butt and takes names. And trust me it has been a hard 30 yrs. I do not baby the old girl. Engine gave up on me long before the tranny ever will.

As someone who used to work for a major equipment dealer.....not red..... Buying in bulk might not mean you are getting name brand. The tanks we had in our dealership were labeled John deere oil but what went in them was cheap bulk oil not the real stuff. So if you want name brand your best bet is buying in cases 1 or 2.5 gal jugs.

That sounds like another JD trick....:BangPC: I worked at a "red" dealer, and I assure you..... it was what it says it was.... at least where I worked...

I don't think it's a green trick just a cheap owner that didn't care in my case, but it taught me not to trust bulk oil.:BB&YS:

How important is the cooling fan for the hydro? Mine doesn't have a fan on it, don't know if the PO took it off or what.

If you are going to use it hard you need it. If you are only going to do easy jobs with it for short periods of time you may be able to get by with out it as long as the fins on the pump are nice and clean to give it some cooling but I would get a fan on it if it was my tractor.

I'd put a fan on it ASAP before I did anything with it if it were mine.

I'd also put a fan on, I'd hate to burn the pump up.
