Key wont stay in ignition
 

Is it common for an ignition switch to become worn on the inside so that the key will not stay? From looking at pictures on different vendors websites I am pretty sure I have the right key however it will not stay in the ignition and I am tired of having to dig it out of my pocket every time I want to turn the engine off. I have 72 model 86 with a three wire ignition and the little ignak two lobed key. I took the switch out and inspected it thinking maybe a key had been broken off inside it but could not see anything wrong with it. I like to keep things original but have a hard time spending the money for a new switch just for this reason. Just wondering if anyone else has came across this issue.

Mine does the same thing....Hope someone has a better answer than me. I got 550 cord tied to mine.

I have the opposite problem, I can't get my key out of my 127.

The 149, that I used to have, the key would fall out all the time so i just tied a string to it and hooked it to the hydro lift lever.

I imagine it's prolly a common thing given the age and (ab)use some of these machines have gone through in the past

That's what I figured but I thought I would throw it out there just to see. I don't want to put any holes in the dash or I would put a toggle and a push button and do away with the key all together.

I had a 149 that the key fell out of. I looked through the junk drawer, and found one that was slightly thicker. Worked perfect.

I do not think the "teeth" on the key do anything!! :HeadScratch:

A different key ain't a bad idea. Good thinking!!

I'm pretty sure you're right about the teeth.

They don't. You can start them with a screwdriver.

Or go all the way and buy a new switch. :biggrin2:

Methinks you key is not right.indack keys were used on the quietline models and up.Yours should look like a a a key!

That's what I was thinking..... I remember our old 71 used an IH key... For an IH ignition. All IH tractors used the same key. However, the replacement one that I found looks like it's just a indack key. Lew, is this correct?

Same problem here, got a 1050 doing it. I've "lost" it before and borrowed the 1330 key which worked with no problem.

What I've started doing is taking the key out of the ignition and putting the key ring through the lift lever button and hanging it there when I'm not using it.

I have 4 different type of keys the A,G,and indak keys,one version of the a key G is shaped like an Indak key.

Duct tape,:biggrin2: when everything else fails.

Lew, the one on the very right side is a true IH key. It will start ANYTHING IH made.

For all who are interested. You can purchase that ignition that will use that key from IH. Order an ignition switch for a 1086 IH tractor. This ignition has the off/on/start positions. It will have 5 spades on the back. For most tractors, you will only need 3. Part #107682C1. Here is a link from OEM tractor parts for the switch with keys for $32. I don't know how much IH wants. If you only need an on/off switch, it is part #403562R2. It is for a 1066 IH tractor. It has 2 terminals on back and will use the original true IH key. Here is the link for it at OEM tractor parts, $21.50

I put that 1086 key switch in my 1250 because I hated having an IH with a cheapo key.

If the original poster has a key like the third one from the left in darkminion 17's post, then that is the wrong key.

I'd recommend the original poster to this thread apply some PBlaster to the keyhole. If there are any springs or tumblers like a real switch, maybe they will free-up and the thing might just hold his key. Just a thought.

My key looks like the third from the left on darkminions picture. I wondered if the problem was the key itself. Should it be the second from the left?
