CBH 12-17-2009 10:58 PM

Wow! That is definitely "tore down"!
I had a 1200 a while back. They're good tractors.

GERKS 149 12-18-2009 10:05 AM

What did you use to strip the frame down to bare metal? That looks great! I am in a similar stage tearing down my 149 and I am having a time getting the coil spring pins out of the lift bar in the frame. Any suggestions?:BangPC:

Mark

dieseldog558 12-18-2009 07:40 PM

GERKS 149.....hey thanks alot.....i used a snap on sand blaster on most of it and then i used an air operated angle grinder with some 3m buffing pads on it...on the lift arm ...i had trouble with mine too...i just kept using a punch and a 4lb hammer and finally they came out...along with some PB Blaster penetrating oil......good luck on those

drivadesl 12-22-2009 06:00 PM

Great start Diesel. What are the plans for painting that bad boy? Are you gonna go the HVLP route with a spray booth, or are you taking the rattle can approach. Either way, I'm sure its going to turn out great, but I envy you guys that have spray booth set ups.

dieseldog558 12-22-2009 06:52 PM

hey thanks alot....i am going to use the rattle cans...usually put a good coat on,wet sand it and buff it...can't tell it from being sprayed......i hope!!!.....lol

Sawman 12-22-2009 07:11 PM

Air hammer with the punch bit works good on roll pins that like to put up a fight.

Looks nice. Rattle can or not by stripping it down to the frame like you have it will come out nice.

Looks really good dieseldog looks like you are enjoying yourself I wish I had a heated garage.

dieseldog558 02-09-2010 10:57 AM

thanks mikepc, yeah it is tough with no heat in the garage,i did have gas heat in it but not anymore so i have a 125,000 btu space heater that i use from time to time..works good...again thanks

IAfarmer 02-09-2010 11:17 AM

A local guy restored a 782 with rattle can paint. You would never know, and I even asked him, as it shines better than the paint on Dad's Cuda. He said metal prep before the spray, and proper wet sanding after the spray made it all work out.

I am giong to pain the bad spots on my 86 Dodge this way until I can afford a real paint job, It was very sharp.

Nice job.

dieseldog558 02-09-2010 11:20 AM

thanks IAfarmer, yeah usually wet sanding after you rattle can really works but so far on this project i haven't had to wet sand,it is going good so far, only if i can get the rear fender to turn out ok...lol....awful big part for rattle can to look good

Looking GREAT Diesel... I was hoping to do that to my 1200 next year, but I can't breathe the vapors from paints due to working in quarries and breathing silica dust. I get terribly sick when I inhale any amount.I have to even watch when I spray paint with cans. Even using a respirator wont totally help. Maybe I should drop my 1200 off at your place for an even trade...lol

ACecil 02-16-2010 10:28 PM

Great pics, dieseldog558! You are making nice progress. :beerchug:

GERKS 149 02-17-2010 12:19 AM

That looks great!! One would never know that was a rattle can job. By the way I was able to get the spirol pins out with the proper set of roll pin punches from Sears. They came out like butter. You are much farther along than me on my 149 restore. Mine is completely apart waiting to start the stripping process. Over her I just need a little time and motivation.
Keep up the good work!!
Mark

dieseldog558 02-17-2010 07:17 AM

Thanks bignastygs,ACecil and gerks, bignasty yours looks good....but we can freshen it up for ya...lol.....gerks...glad those roll pin punches worked out for ya,thanks guys for all the compliments...hey gerks...get us some pics sometime

thenrie 02-17-2010 10:11 AM

It won't be long before I can start the paint on my 1650. What brand and colors of "rattle-can" primer and paint did you use? Did you actually strip the trans/diff and front axle, or just clean and paint? Sure looks nice!

dieseldog558 02-17-2010 10:21 AM

thenrie, the primer is rustoleum grey, the paint is from tractor supply...number on the can is 5339-25 for the yellow and 5339-15 for the white...yeah i did strip almost all the parts with a sandblast gun or a angle die grinder with those 3m brand buffing pads...thats what we use at work to clean gasket surfaces since all i do is build diesels

dieseldog558 02-17-2010 01:04 PM

do you guys got any pics of your progress....love to see

Dieseldog-I am not good with the picture thing. It always seems to be the wrong size or something. Maybe I need some explainer!!
