The red ones?

What makes these tractors different from other cubs? They're the 782/982's, correct? Larger engines?

eastonct124 12-11-2009 08:29 AM

I'm no expert, but while I was looking them up, The 982 is the Super GT .It's longer. They are the first ones that offer the diesel engine (kabuta). The gas engines are the kohler twins...17hp for the 782, and onan twin for the 982.. They both come with hydro lift, and elec. pto.
They are big, powerful, serious machines. I was thinking of finding one to put a front loader, and backhoe on.
And the weird part is the dual rear brake pedals.....for left, and rt wheel.
I think they are both hydro only.

MBounds 12-11-2009 08:33 AM

Stitch: Basically, they are just later model brothers to all the earlier Yellow/White ones. When IH hired a new President/CEO, Archie McCardell, in 1977, he at some point decreed that all IH made tractors would be Red! So, with the QL era ending and the 82 Series in research and development, they became IH 2150 RED Lawn & Garden Tractors with production beginning in late 1979 for the 1980 Model year.

Another slight difference from previous practice, the Cadet Lawn Tractors were incorporated in the 82 Series model numbering. Also, note that the RER Lawn Mowers and Walk-Behind Mowers remained White in color (they weren't tractors...).

Yes, the 682/782 introduced the twin cylinder Kohler KT engines of 17 horsepower. One more hp that the previous 16 hp single cylinder 1650 but ooooh so much smoother. The Iso-Bar engine mounting was also gone.

Also, with the 82 Series Model 982, Cub Cadet introduced the first "Super Garden Tractor" to the world. It used larger wheels & tires, was about 8-10 inches longer, and had a 19.9 hp opposed twin Onan engine. IH never called the 982 a "Super Garden". That was only applied later by the CCC Corporation after IH sold the Outdoor Products Division to MTD.

Later, in 1982, CCC switched the differential housings to Cast Aluminum. They then introduced the IH 1282/CCC 680 (basically a red 1250 including a modified Iso-Bar engine mount). In 1984 CCC introduced the IH 782D/CCC 882 with the 3-cyl 15 hp Kubota Diesel.

I was going to respond, but decided to wait until more knowledgeable members chime in. The only thing I would add is the 582 with it's 16 hp Briggs engine (I won't mention the 482 or the 582 Special).:Cub8:

jbollis 12-11-2009 09:06 AM

They actually made a 182, 282, 382, 482, 582, 582 special, 682, 782, 782 Diesel, 982, 1282.

I may have forgot a few. But if I remember rite this is how they were.

1,2,3,482 were verticle shaft small cheapies, body style just like the red, white, blue spirit of 76 (i think it was)

the,582,582 special are the standard 82 series body style. they were all horizontal motors, but they had some funky tranny in them. I am thinking it was some kind of belt drive 4 speed.

682 should be an 82 with manual lift and hydro drive

782 ,782d should be an 82 with hydro lift and drive the d having the diesel motor

982 this is the 82 super, basicly the same but the frame is 5-6 inches longer and has bigger tires, dual hydro control and dual brakes, and an onan motor.

1282 an 82 with a 12 hp kohler and hydro lift and drive

most of these all had either the kt 17, briggs 16 opposed twin, onan 20 in the super,or the kabota diesel.

I have always been told that they were built before MTD happened and they were badged and sold at international dealers not cub cadet dealers.

I do not know if any of this is correct or not, I am sure some is and some is not but it is just what I can rember of the top of my head.

truckntran 12-11-2009 09:54 AM

So the red wasn't just in response to the expensive green paint on the competition?

If they has always been red I wonder if IH would still be making cubs? I saw a 582 in red, no motor, and almost bought it even tho I have no $$..

Given the choice, theoretically, would you have bought a red Cadet over a yellow one, all other things equal? I know I woulda.

MBounds 12-11-2009 10:14 AM

FYI:

The 580, 680, 1604, 1606, 1710, 1711, 1712, 882, 1912, 1914, 1210, 1512 are NOT red Cub Cadets!!

There is no such thing as a 986 either. 986 is found only on the ID plate and is a factory code for a 982 with a rear PTO.

Please re-read my earlier post. I covered all the red ones!!

aagitch 12-11-2009 10:49 AM

Truckntran, IH was having financial troubles while the cub cadets were being made red so no that didn't keep them from selling the line. They sold the line while they were being made red. MTD actually kept making them red for the ag dealers and yellow/white for the cub dealers. There's a couple books out there that have excellent info on the history of the cub cadet including serial number info etc... Read Myrons first post it has some excellent info. Some say for example a red 982 would sell for more than a yellow/white 982 with same exact options but it's people's preference and the person buying/selling it.

SORRY you were posting the same time I was, and finished first. And I did say I was unsure on some of them. I just cut and pasted a list, and was trying to describe some of them that I knew.I will edit my original post .

And by the way you left out the 182,282,382,and 482 in your post.

182,282, and 382 are all lawn tractors as you mention. The 482 is a garden tractor with 11 hp briggs engine and 4-speed peerless transaxle. The 582S also has the same rearend, but the 582 has the IH shaft-driven 3-speed rear.

T-Mo 12-11-2009 11:13 AM

Also, the 482 wasn't a vertical shaft engine - it was a horizontal shaft. It had a drive shaft back to a 90 degree angle box on the Peerless 4 speed transmission. BTW, that was the set up for the 582 Special, while the 582 had IH's 3 speed cast iron rear end.

The 182, 282 and 382 were vertical shaft lawn tractors, while the 482 might have been considered a lawn & garden tractor, though you will find most Cubbers will NOT categorized it as a garden tractor. Same with the 582 Special. (which may not be IH, I'm not sure on that one):bigthink:

eastonct124 12-11-2009 12:07 PM

I thought the 482, 582, 682, and 782 were all the same chassis.

eastonct124 12-11-2009 12:15 PM

I see now. The 482 had a B&S 11 hp, with a different trans than all the others.
It must have been a cheap version.
But the WB, Width, and overall length are standard WF.

IH wanted a cheaper tractor to sell to appease the Sears, MTD crowd so that's why they made the 482 and 582 Special. They actually started a few years earlier with the 1100. To keep costs down, they used a Briggs engine instead of a Kohler and instead of their own 3 speed cast iron transmission, they used a Peerless cast aluminum 4 speed transmission, the same transmission that's been used by JD and others for years. This transmission was belt driven, so IH ran a drive shaft back to a right angle gear box, and then place a belt from that box to the pulley on the transmission. I heard you can take a 482 (or a 1100 or a 582 special) and swap an IH 3 speed rear in it by getting the proper drive shaft, etc.

Yep...I've done this.

ajgross 12-11-2009 01:58 PM

Well if anyone has a 482, 582 special or a 1282, I've got a 582 that I'm looking to trade. I have 2 582's and I'm looking for a red model that I don't already have. I would also settle for a 782.

AJ

btw, I have two 582's, one 682, and one 982.

Myron B

Actually Myron, you are wrong. the 986 was a full size tractor and not a garden tractor. it had roughly 115 drawbar horsepower,3 pt., 3 sets of hyraulics, 8 foreward speeds and 4 reverse plus torque amplifer and most featured a ROPS cage instead of a ROPS cab with windows the tractor was produced in the late '70's until the 88 series of tractor came out, and I believe at the time it was when Tenneco bought out IH and was merging it with J.I. Case.

MBounds 12-11-2009 02:36 PM

Placebo: Heeelllloooo...I believe we're talking Cadets & Cub Cadets here, not full size farm tractors....Geeez... and there is still no such thing as a Cub Cadet 986 like I said!!

eastonct124 12-11-2009 03:19 PM

Sorry guys, not to put fuel on this fire...but there was a 986.
It seems to be a 984 with the front hydro outlet. It's not IH, it's CCC.
Must have come out when the Co. changed ownership.

Matt G. 12-11-2009 03:33 PM

Myron is still correct. The code on the tag reads 986, and it denotes rear PTO and front hydraulics (IIRC) but the tractor still says 982 on the hood and is still a 982...

eastonct124 12-11-2009 05:06 PM

Even though the operator's manual say: 982
984
986 Garden Tractors

bignastyGS 12-11-2009 06:30 PM

I have decided that when I get my 1200 all cleaned up and good looking,I will get me a 782 or 982. I am really taking a liking to the red ones..17 or 19 hp or even a diesel would be really cool...

That's just their way of identifying the 982 as far as options goes. But, the hood still says 982 regardless and a person would still call it a 982 whether it has all the options or none. I'd have to agree with Myron there's no 984/986 it's just a code on the data tag.

I think you would love either one. I have a red 782 and an 1811 (same body style). I'm partial to the 782 because of the color. Excellent gt's and you'd love the smoothness and sound of the twins.

eastonct124 12-11-2009 07:17 PM

I want a 982. No diesels though. As much as I know how great diesels are....I don't want to need to put another 55gal drum at my house for a different fuel.....and I know gas engines, so.....
My reasoning is for a loader....and poss. backhoe.

Matt G. 12-11-2009 09:15 PM

Bill-

I've seen IH-built 582 Specials. I think IH started that, and not MTD.

ajgross 12-12-2009 12:34 AM

According to my books, IH did if fact build 582 specials.

AJ

MBounds 12-12-2009 08:41 AM

Wild Bill: My references all show the 582S showing up in documents & brochures for 1981 and later. The 1979 & 1980 IH 82 Series documents and publications do not show a Special. Since IH terminated Louisville Cub Cadet production in April 1981 pending the sale in June '81, I conclude that you are correct and that it was CCC which introduced the 582S after the sale. With the 582S and the earlier QL model 1100 having essentialy the same chassis & driveline, it could be that the 582 Special was in the hopper at IH, but I have nothing whch supports any actual IH manufacture.

If anyone has some definitive proof otherwise I sure would like to see it posted....but be careful about those coded publication dates (usually on the back cover)!! My library collection shows those brochures morphed and squeezed the Special in only for 1981 print dates and later!!

I really enjoy how much you all know about these tractors. I've had red and yellow, CCC and IH, and can tell you a little about them, but you all know the nitty-gritty and it's great!

Now, if you want to know about Dodge trucks or corn hybrids, I can help.......

aagitch 12-12-2009 04:31 PM

I don't know how accurate this info is but on page 66 of "Cub Cadet: The First 45 Years" magazine it says IH production for the 582S ended with serial number 694101 in April 1981.

MBounds 12-12-2009 07:33 PM

Wild Bill, AGitch: Looks like my conclusion is in error. In addition to Oscar's book, I have turned up an MTD company "confidential" listing that shows the 582S (IH Kind/Code: 2050596Uxxxxxx) was indeed produced by IH at least for a short run beginning about July/Aug 1980, probably for the 1981 model year with all production ending in April 1981, with a serial number range of 665001-700,000. After the sale, the IH Kind Code for the CCC made 582S apparently changed to 2050583Uxxxxxx. This same CCC produced IH model was also the then concurrent CCC yellow/white Model 580.

I learn something new every time I dig into the Library.....

Way to go Stitch.....got one heck of a discussion going now!! My personal opinion.....the red ones rule from the stand point of the 982 looks like a "TRACTOR" It looks big, bulkly, powerful, it says in a deep voice "look at me, I am one heck of an impressive tractor". Heck, my wife even likes it! And that is very RARE that she likes the same things I do, especially when it comes to spending money! I just know that I am the only one around my area that has one, and I like that....no "keeping up with the Jones'" here....I am going to have something unique, no one else is going to have! Kinda pig headed I know, but that is the way I am. Nothing wrong with the yellow and white ones....just partial to red ones myself.

ajgross 12-22-2009 12:11 PM

I have noticed one discrepancy in Oscar Will's book about 582's. It show the machine code for a IH built 582 as 582 when in fact both of my IH built 582's have the machine code 592. This is for the regular 582 and not the 582 special though.

AJ, thanks for pointing that out. I recently just aquired an IH CC 582 and have been on this forum since researching and learning about these things. One of the first things I did was checked the serial # and it reads 592 which confused me. My whole sn is 2050592U683690. I've been on the hunt for an 82 series GT and finally found one. The PO tore it all apart and left it out in the weather here in Southern Oregon. Now I'm trying to figure out what's missing. Great to read and learn from all these posts regarding the history of these awesome machines.
