1961 Cub Diesel Re-Power
 

Well guys, I got a new toy today! 6hp Diesel from Carroll Stream. Looks pretty good under the hood (or, wedged under...), and there is lots of space to play with if I feel like adding anything later. This is going to be a working tractor, so I don't want to mess up my pretty decent K-161, so I'm keeping it in the case that I find another O that has a smoker. I even got around to starting a mounting plate! I will be re-locating the tank and muffler at a later time, and just running is sans-hood until that point. It seems like it should work very well in this tractor, as basically everything has been lining up well! :biggrin2: Wish me luck!

Looks like you will need to make a "midnight run" on the local restaurant used cooking oil pit so you can get the grass cut!! :bigeyes:

i was thinking about doing just this to one of my originals let me know how it turns out! i just didnt see spendin the coin on that engine without knowing for sure if it was going to work

Maybe cooking oil in the future, but this one will be run on regular "off-road". We have a 500 gal. tank that we use for the larger equip., and I hate using gas-cans. I don't have a deck either... Actually have one lined up to buy, but the weather has been too crappy to go get it! :bash2: A WF would be neat, but I think a "Popper" engine in a "Popper Age" tractor is more my style.

If you go with the 10hp, you will need to get a new cup made for the flywheel. Its base is longer and narrower than the Kohler, but I'm making a simple mount. I can't wait to get it going! :biggrin2:

i'm in like with that ! most diesels have aprox. 2x hp to torque .... should be a good motor for it. Probably fill it with fuel once every 3 months !
Hope it has comprssion release or you will have diesel elbow aka tennis elbow !

Yup. That is the big red lever on the injector! I could pull start it, but thank God it has elec. start! :biggrin2:

this is my go to town / hwy car .... TDI Golf .... i've removes all the pollution control and remapped the ecu .... I average 45 mpg and 50's on the hwy ... little monster will scoot to!

I believe I am the first to convert a 1961 Cub to diesel. Here she is, running and driving! It is surprisingly easy to pull-start using the original cup, and runs like a champ! I just need to hook up the throttle, and get the electrical system built. I may just end up cutting up my hood, as it is pretty rusted out in the front. Such a smooth engine... at idle, it makes the front end do a little dance! I'll have to get a video of it tomorrow.

I love the smell of diesel in the morning !

COOL! Hope you post more on the repower. Just my 2 cents but if the fuel tank location is the big issue you may want to relocate it an put an electric pump on it. :beerchug:

I'll either have to fab another mount, or just make a cut-out in the hood, which at this point is a viable option. The same would have to happen for the muffler.

The engine has 2 fuel pumps on it already so that isn't the issue. I just don't know where a good location is to put it, so I think I may just cut out this nasty hood until I really decide I want to make it look nice.

What about making a bracket to fit the tank between the grille and engine. Them make a exhaust to clear the hood. Maybe a stack since it is a diesel after all

I want to keep that space open, just in case I want to add hydraulics or something later. I was thinking of putting it on the side of the dash, tucked underneath the battery box...

:beer2:that would work to, being a diesel a huge tank isnt really needed. im just not a big fan of cutting on this old metal dented up and rusty or not!

You could put a fuel tank under the seat. :bigthink:

That's an idea... An old plastic tank from a Sears Suburban might work... But I think I'll be adding fenders later... I don't know...

I spread fertilizer with my QL 1000 for over an hour on Friday, I burned about a quart of gasoline.:bigeyes:

My QL 1000 only has a 1 gallon tank, that is good, because it uses so little gas, if the tank were much bigger, the gas might get stale before I used it!!

I have ran this engine for about 3 hours already, and the level hasn't changed. Oh yeah. :beerchug:

This is a tank off a Honda 13HP vert shaft engine. I had it mounted to the side of the tower for a while but have since moved it to the space between the battery and engine. One other option is to put the tank in the battery space and then go with a smaller dry cell battery like this one http://www.stealth316.com/2-dynabatt.htm#g16ep

These batterys have plenty of cranking power, used to have one in my race car with a 383 Chevy.

I'll have to look around a bit. I don't want to cut up this machine much, except those parts I will have to replace anyways.

That loud rattling is the front grill-insert. I put a bolt through it afterwards to get it to stop.

Thanks guys! I should be getting a deck and snow-plow for it sometime soon, so I'm really excited to get it running some equipment, though I have been putting a couple hours on it just putting-around.
