mower deck .... info

hello all,

I've got a restored 1450 ..... i'm researching mower decks....want to find a more modern mulhcer deck 42" or better that I can fab to my good 1450. I've looked at a 1517 42" deck that may work but the pulley location is much farther back .... has anybody had success converting a newer better cutting mulching deck to the "better" old style tractor. or am I gonna be the "ginnea pig " ?

someone has gotta tried this already .... lets hear from you ....

mucho tks,

bryan :bigthink: :beerchug:

The decks that came with these tractors work great. Why do you think a newer deck would be better? Put a set of mulching blades on a 44C deck and Bob's your uncle.

I love the gator blades myself. Just ordered a set for the the 1864 yesterday.:beer2: Sam posted about some blades he uses in the general section last fall. Let me see if I can find the post.:bigthink:

I agree my 48" cuts better than any new mower I've used.

OK ... you guys have talked me into it ... might try some of those blades , Just rebuilt this last year....has little time on it. Last thing I need to add are the two end pulleys and an idler pulley assembly (mine had broken spring and is rusted solid) Got them on the way tho ... maybe this weekend I'll give it a whirl and stir some pollen down here in SC ....

I think you'll be delighted with that deck. I have a 44C and a 50A on my 1450 and 1650 and they both cut very well.

BTW, I like the paint job on your deck. When I restored my decks, I toyed with the idea of yellow/white (though opposite of what you did) but chickened out and went all white. You know, that "keep it stock" mentality. But now I regret not going "two tone" as you've done. Looks great!

those front wheel kits make a HUGE difference in the cut quality! i too am a fan of gator mulching blades but ive never tried to find for my 44a deck. have them on my 50c and will never go back.

Methos 04-11-2013 09:58 AM

The deck looks great! Let us know which way you go with your blades.

Gator mulcher's

I'm going to install the gator mulcher blades ... they look like they have alot of sharp blade surface .... and all thos extra cutters on the aft end also look pretty heavy duty.

Also if one of you guys could update me on proper blade mount installation ... is one of those heavy washers on both top and bottom of blade followed by the large nut ... or should you also have a lock washer under the nut. How was it done from the factory ? ... i've never seen a parts diagram for it.

tks, B.

sawdustdad 04-11-2013 07:14 PM

I normally use one washer under and one on top of the blade, followed by the nut. I use an impact wrench with a 1-1/8 inch socket to take them off and put them back on.

I'm not sure if this is the correct way to do it, but that's what I do.

She looks like she's ready for mowing duty!

Grampie 04-12-2013 03:13 PM

scgtguy, Nice pictures! I really like the way you have your rear hitch with the tow ball ahead of the hitch hole. Nice!

sawdustdad 04-13-2013 02:38 PM

Nice! Is that a reflector on the seat back? What do you have on the fenders just above the foot rests? Something to prevent heel marks?

scgtguy 04-13-2013 06:32 PM

1450

yes .... I painted the triangle on the back of the seat same paint I used on rest of tractor, then I put a refective strip top and bottom. The protective pads on the fenders are nothing more than stairway non skid .... does keep them from my heels banging them up.

I just finnished mowing with it scince I rebuilt the mower deck ... you guys were absolutly right ! mowes really nice ....great even cut .... walks right thru most anything ... adding those extra front wheels and gator blades were the ticket.

Most happy down here in SC .... the whole project rebuilding the tractor and blade box was great .... mowes better than I remember as a kid ... what a horse it is !

Next items as funds allow are a rear hitch with a cultivator and rear blade.

happy camper !!!

thanks again to this forum ... lotsa great info from alot of folks.
