682 confusion
 

Guys,

Help me out a little here. I have a good chance of picking up this 682 for chump change. Before I get too excited take a look at these pics. The emblem on the hood sez International Harvestor, the rear end looks CCC aluminum and the serial number "731320" sez 1984 CCC.

Is this a CCC in IH clothing???

Is the 17hp Kohler, Series II stock?

CCC started building x82's in 1982. They came in both red(sold at IH dealers) and yellow and white(sold at CCC dealers). You are right about the aluminum rear end and the series 2 is stock for that tractor. They changed to the series 2 somewhere around serial number 726,000 and the aluminum rear started at serial number 720000. So it probably is a true red one, just not built by IH.

Thanks AJ. What really threw me was the IH badging. I thought IH was out of the picture by 1984 and it would have had the CCC badging. This machine ran this summer and was used to cut grass but has not run since. I was told there was nothing mechanically wrong with it, maybe just water in the gas. If I told you that I could pick it up , with the 44 inch deck in good shape, for $100.00, what do you all say?

Oh, it's in plain view in my brother's, neighbor's yard in a seaside town in the state of Maryland. Stop by and take a look at it but be sure to get there before I do.:ROTF1:

I am also looking at a CCC 1712 in Virginia for about $350. Almost the same tractor as the 682 but the 1712 has hydro lift and two hydraulic ports up front. One or both may be posted here later next month for sale. Might keep one though to cut grass.

Any Cub with a chassis serial number 700,001 or greater is CCC/MTD built.

On the Kohler, if the spec numbers are:

24,000 to 24,299 = Series I
24,300 & up = Series II

Like AJ mentioned, those guidelines are accurate.

The IH emblem was just a part that was used on the tractor. I have a 1984 784 that has IH signage all over it also.

If you can't get both i'd definitely get the 1712 but getting both would be great and they're both definitely worth the asking prices.

Now Roland... You know that your Cub Cadet says 782 on the hood!! While 782 is the Cub Cadet Model number, the 784 number you cited is the CCC factory model code indicating standard equipment but is not the model of the tractor....

Guys, did the IH built 682's also have Kohler twins? The reason I ask is because the 582's had a Briggs and Stratton twin, it seems odd that they would have gone with one supplier for the 582 and another for the 682. Also, Brian Miller's site seems to indicate that a 682 came with a 19.9 Onan. Does not sound right, does it? I think only the 982 had the Onan, right?

Weaverama: It's all in the price points... Those B&S engines were cheaper for IH/CCC to buy than the Kohlers. There is also the brand loyalty factor...some folks (believe it or not) would prefer the B&S. Only the 982 came with a 19.9 Onan.
682's came with a Kohler KT-17.

You gotta be careful with Brian Miller's website...while there is a lot of good info on there, there is also a lot of incorrect and misleading info on there.

For what its worth, and right now its at about 75 cents on the dollar, IMO they both seem like real good deals and the appropriate action should be taken! Good Luck.:beerchug:

Well it took me 7 months but I finally got back down to the eastern shore of MD and bought the 682. It came at very little cost.:beer2: Seems the PO put a brand new KT17 Series II in it about 4 years ago and then he had some electrical problems and it sat since last summer. The deck is toast and I am searching for a decent 50C. The tractor cleaned up real nice and I need to spend some time with it to figure out what the PO did to the wiring harness. Anyone know of a decent mower deck in or around Maryland let me know. Thanks.

Hmmmm...way I see it...$100.00, its a steal! You can throw a new engine in it if you had to some day. For all the good parts you get with that tractor, I think its worth $100.00 any day if it saves another tractor from rotting into the ground. I am surprised it lasted as long as it did, that no other passer by didn't scoop it up.

It was sitting in plain site of a neighborhood road. Oddly it was about 150 feet from a body of saltwater but has not suffered any serious rust; even the battery pan is intact. There is not a single wrinkle in any of the sheet metal, the engine "will run like a champ" according to the PO. I have not had time to mess with the wiring yet. I was thinking about flipping it but if I can find a decent deck it makes sense to let my boys use it to cut the neighbors' farm and keep the hours off my Green thing.

Again, I know that Aagitch is looking for a 50C, but if anyone near Maryland has one, let me know.

thats great work! i think the direction you are headed in would be a huge help to many! you could also include links to parts tree as well . anyway, i really like it!!
