What else would you check with Hydro fluid out?
Hi guys new member here. Just picked up a 1974 149 couple weeks ago for couple hundred bucks. Had an older IH Cub many years ago, regret selling it. Anyways, back to the 149 and a question. The tractor is in reasonable good condition. Koehler fires right up and seems to run well. Hydraulic lift operates properly, not sure yet on the condition of the PTO, as the tractor came with a 44" deck, but was not on. After moving the tractor into the shop, and suffering from a slight case of whiplash, the next day I noticed the puddle on the floor under the tractor.
After doing some research, I first checked the check valves on top of the pump. They are the manuals and seem to be fine- no leak here! The pump is pretty clean, and free of dirt and crud. Checked the lines into pump- nothing. Nothing under the rear gasket, or from the filter. Can't seem to isolate exactly where this leak is! I'm going to replace the rear axle seals. Is there anything else you guys would recommend checking before putting the new fluid in? Really like to fix this thing now before moving on. It's not a really bad leak, but still annoying! Thanks! |
Places where it can leak would be the cork gasket between the pump and gear case, the trunnion shaft seals, the input and output shaft seals, the axle seals, suction tube connections, filter, internal brake plunger if it has one, and the rear cover gasket.

Welcome 84 buckeye to OCC:beer2:

Thanks guys. Looks like I'm going to have to get more 'educated' with this pump than I originally intended. Might as well replace the cork gasket, do the repair on the tunnion and check out all the seals too. Has disk brakes on the back.
That would leave just the suction tube connections and the bullet holes, hopefully those are in the service manual. |

:Welcome2:
Sounds like your headed in the right direction.:beerchug: BTW I hate oil leaks. |
Welcome as you can see most of us here keep things on a lighter note. In addition to seal replacement be sure to change the tranny filter too with the proper replacement filter. Do not use a regular oil filter. If it were mine I would be sure to clean any gunk (technical Term) out which you knew of course. I highly recommend HyTran as a replacement fluid. Yes it is more expensive than the clones out there but does the best job on encapsulating moisture to keep water out of your system.

Welcome to OCC! Good luck with your 149!

Thanks for the link Sam. I like to get as much 'information' as possible before I start tearing into something. Will definately check that out!
Funny you mention Chicago. I thought all the IH Cub Cadets were built in Louisville, Kentucky? Mine has Chicago, Illionois on the rear seriel number tag. Yes, I already bought 2.5 gallons of Hytran, $44,. rear gasket $8, and the cub filter was $18. Stuff sure is expensive, but I figure it's worth it. Ok to use carb or brake cleaner inside getting it all nice and clean? Thanks again guys for all your help. Couldn't pass on this tractor. Really wanted a 169, but just can't find them around anymore it seems. And the price was so right with this 149. Someday I have every intention of doing a complete tear down/restore. |
I'm pretty sure all cub cadets were built in Louisville. Corporate HQ was in Chicago so that's why it says Chicago.
