Spare Super rear rebuild
5 Attachment(s)
Picked up a rear from a Super from Leadslingingdaddy a couple weeks ago and finally got around to working on it. Pulled the gear case apart, cleaned it up. Drilled two oil return holes on each side (see red arrows) so that the oil and condensation that gets trapped in the axle tubes can return to the main case when you drain the oil. After I finish the gear case I’ll tear the pump apart, inspect and reseal it.

Looks great Sam! Keep the pics coming! |
How did you know/figure out to drill the casing for the axle tubes to drain? Very good info!
|
Everyone that I've taken apart is always full of nasty stuff up to the level of the carrier bearings. I had one that sat for a long time and it had about 2 cups of water in each side. Easy job on the aluminum case. Not sure with a cast iron.

Got the gear case all done today. Even painted it just for Randy. Drilled and taped the case for a vent also. I'll get some pics of it tomorrow. Next is the pump. Plan on opening it up tomorrow.

Sounds good, Sam! Pics or it didn't happen. :biggrin2:

Pics as promised of the Super rear and pump re-seal. I had an awesome day. Went down to the shop, put on some good tunes and took the pump I bought from Leadslingingdaddy for a Super apart. Drilled and tapped the input shaft so it can now be used with the rag joint or the CV style drive line. Replaced all the seals and put her back together. The best part is I have no parts left over. Just waiting for the expansion plug and I can finish it up. Made a fixture to hold the pump out of wood. It’s a little different than what they call for in the service manual. This is not a difficult job to do if you take your time and READ the MANUAL.

I just can't wait till I get to do one of those. I'll give you a call when the time comes. :beerchug: |
Do you have the machinery to drill and tap the shaft or did you have it done by a machine shop? I had to pay $35 to get mine drilled and tapped. Just curious. I may send my other one to you :)

I drilled it while the pump was together in my drill press. The fixture that I made to work on the pump held it nice and steady. Then I just tapped it by hand. Did all this before it took the pump apart to overhaul it. The shaft is case hardened so you have to go easy drilling it at first and you need a good drill bit and cutting oil. |

Just saw this post Sam.
Excellent work and descriptions on what you have done. If I ever find a spare rear, will do the same as you described. Quote:

Made a little test stand to hold the rear, an adapter so I could run it with a cordless drill and a return line for the hydraulics out of some 3/8” brake line and a pair of flare nuts. Good thing Advance Auto was open today for the brake line. Had to do the cut and flare deal for the return line. Put oil in her and took the drill to it. Houston we have lift off. Runs like a new one. Now if any of you guys need a fresh rear and pump for a Super I have one on the shelf ready to go. Only thing I’m not positive about are the relief valves because I couldn’t run it long enough for it to develop a leak. The poor little cordless battery died after a couple minutes. :beerchug:
