Farm and Fleet Hy-tran fluid

I got a price for the Hy-tran fluid at a Cub dealer today and I'm really not wanting to spend 8 bucks a quart. Does anyone know if the Hy-tran fluid at farm and fleet works good in the cubs. It says it meets cub/case standards. Plus its 12 bucks a gallon. Thanks a lot guys I just do want to screw this thing up. Jon

Can't speak for farm and fleet, but i've used cenex fluids for the last five years with no problem. Can't justify putting 60 plus dollars worth of fluid in a 100 dollar tractor.

Do you have an IH dealer near you? Check the price from them. My nearest IH dealer is an hour away, but hytran is one of the things i will make the trip for. They have it in 2 or 2-1/2 gal. jugs. or 5 gal. buckets. Some of them have it in bulk tanks, if you have a clean container they will fill it for you. Just call and ask. :biggrin2.gif:

youngguyoldcubs,

Now you've gone a done it! You are really gonna have a hard time gettin this cat back in the bag.

Don't know what you're putting it in, but I have used the cheap stuff from the local farm store for years and never had a problem and I'll bet that a lot of the other guys have too, whether they admit to it or not.

I've been using Mobill 424 hydraulic transmission fluid in a 127 and Traveller Universal trans/hydraulic fluid from TSC in another 127 and a 149 with no problems. I'm sure there will be others on here to tell you all the problems you're gonna have if you don't use the proper fluid but I don't believe it or see any reason to pay the high price for the correct stuff.

Matt G. 11-17-2009 09:47 PM

I'm not sure any of those other fluids have the water absorption capabilities of Hytran, which is a big plus in my opinion. If you buy it from a CaseIH dealership, it's not that terribly expensive, and it's not like you're changing it all the time. But it's your tractor and you can do as you please with it...

FWIW,
Here is a service manual for a sundstrand hydro unit.-- dated 1974
As most know, it is used by other color vehicles as well as tractors mowers Etc.
pg 10 lists various oils compatable http://www.cushmantrackster.com/pay-pdfs/sundstrand.pdf.
Deere of course says there oil is better, cub says there oil is better and the war is on.
I personally have been using neither of those oils for just over 33 years in my big IH tractors and yes Green ones also, with no problems. but that is just my choice.
One might find some useful information in this old manual.

Diz Jr. 11-18-2009 08:02 AM

ol'George,
Thanks for posting that manual.
Lot of nice pictures and information in it.

FWIW:

1) Farm & Fleet, Tractor Supply, etc., do not carry Hy-Tran !! They do carry some Hydraulic fluid which meets some IH specifications but it won't have the patented moisture suspension capabilities of real Hy-Tran!!

2) This past week, I purchased 5 Gallons of bulk genuine HY-Tran from a local Case/IH dealer for slightly less that $60.00. That's about $3.00 per quart. Given that a Hydrostatic uses about 7 qts per change...

3) IMHO, If you can 't handle $21.00 per tractor (plus the filter), you need a different hobby... like maybe tiddledy-winks or basket weaving....

4) A $100.00 Tractor?? Why don't you try shopping around and price a new equivalent to that "ole Cub Cadet" garden tractor!! When you find those prices begin above the $3000.00 mark, then you'll know exactly why it pays to spend a few dollars take good care of that old "hundred dollar" tractor!!

I think I paid $5 a quart for the 2.5 gallon jug the last time I bought some at the Case IH dealer. It's cheaper the more you buy (as in the size of the jug).

Matt G. 11-18-2009 09:33 AM

Myron:

I'm glad to see the price for a 5-gallon pail hasn't gone up much since I last bought it...I think it was $58 or so three years ago.

T-Mo 11-18-2009 09:41 AM

Since I now have 7 IH Cub Cadets - I need to find a good Case/IH dealer close by. Looks like the closest to me is FLieg's Equipment in St. Genevieve which is about 35 miles from me. Not to bad, but I don't get that way very often. I have two Cub Cadet dealers closer than that, but I know the parts guy at the closest CC dealer looked perplexed when I asked him about Hytran. The other one, which is about 25 miles away, I haven't asked him yet. I do know that closest CC dealer doesn't have a very good reputation - dishonest, etc. But for parts.....

Hytran

Options:
if you have a close dealer of the color of grass, they have a hyguard oil that is equal in every way to hy trans , of course they will provide information proving it is better. but that goes back to grade school, and that my dad can kick your dads butt ETC, ETC. Ha,LOL!
but seriously, it is an option If they are a closer source., and their mowers use the same Sundstrand hydro.

It might be mentioned that Tractor supply has reduced their prices of hydraulic fluid two times in the past year, reflecting falling crude prices. it would seem to me, that a 5 gallon pail of whatever you chose, will only be going up in price as our ecomony/crude rebounds, making it a wise purchase for a future fluid change.

T-MO: The Hy-Tran brand is a registered trademark of Case/IH and cannot be used or sold by MTD/Cub Cadet. Cub Cadet sells it (the same stuff) as Hydraulic-Transmission Fluid...the containers use a red stripe label for the correct stuff...Do not use their green stripe label "Drive Fluid!! There's more interesting Hy-Tran info at www.viscosityoil.com. Check the timeline at 1961...

Ol George: Sundstrand Hydrostatic transmissions will work with any hydraulic fluid...shucks, they'll probably work if you pour some old cold coffee in them but is that what you really want to put in there... Hy-Tran (or CCC Hydrailic-Transmisison fluid) is a far superior product with patented moisture suspension characteristics which directly contributes to so many 30-40 year old old Cub Cadet Hydrostatic models still out there and operating almost like new.... and you cannot say that about any other brand, including those green things, even though some of them have managed to survive... Using the best stuff beats half a-- any old time IMHO...

Myron,
Even with me asking about the hydraulic-transmission fluid (with the red stripe) seemed to throw that dealer off. He wanted to sell me a quart of the green stripe stuff. I turned it down and told him - "Wrong stuff".

Funny,
I just knew there would be the "color fluid discussion" when I hit "post"
In the future, I'll keep that in mind when someone has a question that I could of possibly helped.

jamesm 11-18-2009 05:50 PM

My cub dealer tried to sell me the synthetic oil today at $9.99/qt, I told him it was for a 149 and he said it's what I needed, so I left. Neighbor has an Arines with sunstrand trans and dealer told him to use 30 wt. motor oil in it.

Hmm, I definitely wouldn't do that. Engine oil and hydraulic fluid are two completely different things.

MBounds 11-19-2009 08:57 AM

Wild Bill, etal: That comment is exactly correct.....At newer Cub Cadet dealers, they simply have no clue about the older IH models and at too many of the older Cub Cadet dealers, the IH knowledgeable folks have either passed on or retired and the replacements don't have a clue either.... Ya gotta be your own IH expert these days...which is why you, I and others preach having the Operator's, Parts & Service Manuals as an absolute requirement if you own an IH made Cub Cadet (or any other IH piece of equipment for that matter). Not to mention participating in this forum for Cub Cadet answers not always found in the manuals.

BTW: I've been getting my hydraulic filters from a Cub Cadet dealer. I just haven't asked the local Case/IH dealer if they carry one... Does Case/IH use the same IH (not MTD) part number for the Fleetguard filter they sell?? If not, what is the Fleetguard filter part number for the Cub Cadets... Probably less expensive there also...

Bill and Myron,

I totally agree with you on the new dealers not knowing about the IH Cub Cadets. I was talking with the dealer owner, a few years ago and he thought the 126 was a hydro. I had to set him straight...:biggrin2.gif:

I have no idea what the IH/Case number for the filters is. I get mine from Cummins, the Fleetguard # is HF6096
