682 IH diesel conversion
So I will be getting a 682 soon that has a blown engine and I just got a golf course mower with a kabota 3cly diesel. I was wondering if there were any major differences between the 782d and the 682 as far as the frame hood and side shields are concerned. Any other info on such a conversion would be appreciated. I will post pics as i get them.

Exact same frame and hoods though the bolt holes in the frame may be different.
|
Yeah, they are pretty much the same. What size kubota do you have? Can't wait to see some pics:beerchug:

I could not find the tag on it but for the price it didn't matter. After gutting out the engine hydraulics and other usable parts I should be able to make the money back by sending the frame and whatnot to scrap. The engine is already in there backwards with the drivline hooked to the front pulley and a fan on the back above the flywheel.

I have a drawing of the drive shaft adapter that bolts to the pulley if you need it. Numbers for the engine should be on the injector pump.
|
Ty for the number location. I may use the driveshaft that's on the engine because it has Ujoints at each end. The only thing that is concerning me at this point is how the engine mounts to the frame.

This is a pic from the Cub parts site for a 1572,the parts should be the same for a 782D. Note that it only shows one of the engine mounts but there is a left and right mount listed in the parts call out.
|
There are 4 main parts to the engine mount. Each side is made up of two pieces of steel, dampened by two rubber bushings per side.

I got the downer mower today. It is a Jacobson turfcart. It has a D950 kubota engine in it that purrs like a kitten.

that 682 isn't going to know what do do with that D950 in there... i cant wait to see this!
|
I didn't realize the 82 series cubs had the d600 not the D950. Does anyone know how much bigger this engine is over the 600 or if the mounts are even in the same location.
|
I am quite interested in this as well. I have a D782 kubota that I am planning on shoehorning into a 782 roller. If you can make that engine fit than I should have no problem. I do know that the D782 is a couple inches longer than the D600.

Well I just got done pulling the engine out of the turf cart. It looks alot bigger out of the engine compartment I do hope it fits in the the cub. Also it has a nice hyro pump setup on the flywheel. Loader tractor maybe :bigthink::bigthink:

Going up this morning to get the 682. Its my trailers first trip hopefully it goes off without a hitch. Its about a 2 hour drive one way. I will be sure to post some pics when I get back.

Well here it is the 682 IH. This tractor sat in his shop for 6 years with the engine torn down. I had a kt engine in it that was only moving and firing on one side. I did get the old engine and all the parts for it. The side shields and grill are also there. Now I get to find out it it will fit or not:bigthink: There will be another thread on the 125.
|
Congrats on your cubs!
|
Congrats on the scores! Looks like the trailer did just fine.:beerchug:

Well I just set the engine in the tractor and it should fit. Right now it is just sitting on the cross member and the jack. I will have to find a new place to mount the alternator it was sticking out to far it its original location. There is about 2 inchs between the engine and the hood at the closest spot so there should be enough space for the engine mounts. I need to know the distance from the flat of the flywheel to the axle cross member or some other reference point. I need to know this so I can get the engine in the proper location so the PTO will work.

The diesel looks good in the 682!
|
the 782d has the fuel tank under the seat to make room for the radiator
|
I know about the fuel tank I have not gotten around to finding one yet. One thing at a time. I have big plans for this guy I just want to get the engine in first. Then for the hydro lift I have been watching the post on the 3 spool hydro valve. But in order to do hydro lift I will have to get a ported pump. So the list of needed things goes on.

Sorry for the lack of posts on this project. I have however progressed some. I got a PTO for the diesel with the adapter plate. However it would not fit in the flywheel. My bother was able to get in on a lathe at his work and cut it out wider. I then drilled the five mounting holes and taped them. Here it is all mounted up.

Nice job!:beerchug:

Good job! Thanks for the update and pics.
|
I have an idea. Instead of scrapping the old engine, send it to me. That would be awesome.:biggrin2:

So I ran into an issue of the alt position. Being as this engine is some much larger than that of a 782D there is no room for the alt on the front of the engine. I moved the alt to the back of the engine and mounted it on the adapter plate. I plan on driving it off the inner pulley on the PTO drive that would normally drive the fan. I plan on having an electric cooling fan so it would not be used. As always a few pics.

Thanks for updating us and the pics!

Looks like you're making great progress. Keep the pics coming. I love smokers and think you're gonna have a cool 682 diesel. :beerchug:
|
Whats next ? A turbo, or propane fuel enrichment? Nothing like more cubes, hp, or torque where the real work gets done!:bigthink:

If i turn the PTO around There will not be enough room for the radiator. If Im not mistaken the radiator in the 1782 is by the dash. I will be putting the radiator at the front of the tractor.
