My Second O

Well I got a tip from one of the other members on here that he saw an CCO go up for sale last night right down the road from both of us. I called the guy this morning and went and looked at it and picked it up tonight. It is a little rough. It has been sitting in the woods for the last 25 years, It has the original 7HP engine in it and I can turn it by hand. This one wont get a proper restore, it will probably be a worker if I can get it running, but I will clean it up a little. It came with an extra hood and the cast iron grill and insert but not installed and a chrome emblem and oil bath cleaner. It is a 1961, SN 10167

Here are some pics from the CL listing...

Cory,

Congrats on the "new" O!!

It may be in pretty good shape!

Let us know as you rebuild it!

darkminion_17 01-31-2013 07:29 PM

Nice find
you did say it was ruff.
I saw that also on cl,I figgered you would get it.

jbrewer 01-31-2013 07:53 PM

I agree ....looks not too bad at all.

I'm amazed how these things can run and run well after years of neglect. That'll make a fine machine to use!

ihcc104 01-31-2013 07:57 PM

Hopefully it will run! :beerchug:

darkminion_17 01-31-2013 08:07 PM

You will prolly get it running, but getting it to move after twenty five years under its own power is another story.
You were able to move it shows there is no water frozen in the tranny .

True, but the steering is locked up, wont turn, not sure if it is just the linkages or if it is the steering box. :bigthink:

Muzzy 01-31-2013 08:13 PM

I just saw that today on craigslist. I thought it was a decent price.

I got it for less than he was asking, it was in fairly good shape, no rust through holes, I need to do some more digging into the dash, but it looks salvageable.

IACubCadet 01-31-2013 08:21 PM

Nice find Cory! Those are sweet looking rear tires! Collared spindles, so its definitely a 61. Steering won't be a huge issue. Not too far behind my 61 as far as serial #'s go.

Thanks, Maybe it was on the Assembly line with yours then! :beerchug:

Looks like a good one to start with, congrats.

Sam Mac 01-31-2013 08:44 PM

Knowing you it will be running tomorrow. And it will be restored next week. :biggrin2:

Well, I may have it running tomorrow, but I have not finished the last one. I have been waiting on a guy to help me weld up some holes and he hasn't been very wanting to do it. I may have to break down and buy a welder... will 110V work okay? any idea on a size that will handle what I need it to do with the cubs and welding holes up and fixing cracked and stuff?

Sam Mac 01-31-2013 09:19 PM

Cory

Take a look at this thread
http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=21420

Just my 2 cents but I'd look on C-List for a good used 175 or so 220 volt welder that is set up for gas (no slag to chip) you can do the small job with the big welder but you can't do the big job with the small welder. If you can't get your guy to do it call McGee welding on Falls ave in Waterbury, ask for Lance or Victor and tell them I sent you. Lance likes Twisted Tea :beerchug:

The only issue with a 220, is running another line from the breaker box with a new 220 breaker. Not sure how much room is left in the breaker box. I will definitely look into that thread, thanks for the info. If I cant get him to do it I may have to give that welding place a call. I have no idea what to expect for pricing as far as welding and fixing holes go. Thanks again

cubfixer 01-31-2013 09:34 PM

If you have an electric clothes dryer, problem solved. I plug everything that needs 220 into my dryer plug, plus I backfeed the house from the genset through it when the power goes off.

We do have a clothes driver but its upstairs in the bathroom and I work in the basement. I will see what I can do. Would Posting an ad in the wanted section for a welder be against the rules?

Donovan M. 01-31-2013 09:42 PM

I think it’s rather unlikely that you will find a forum member in your area that wants to sell a welder. I’d look on C-list in the tools section.

I wouldn't think so, but I am sure someone will tell you if it is! :biggrin2:

I saw 2 or 3 today on CL within 60 miles.

red56turbo 01-31-2013 11:57 PM

Nice find on the O. Nice to save another one from the "woods". You can tell she's been sitting for a while. Tires are sunk some. Otherwise, looks to be a great candidate for a worker or trailer queen. Congrats!

Anyone seen an oil bath like that? With a wing nut on the bottom and not a wire bail?

darkminion_17 02-01-2013 08:23 PM

Cory
I guess he lost the wire bail.

A few things...
how clean is the tank and the carb?
Try to oil up the bore before you try to get it running, it sat for a long time...
Looks like you have some work to get it running.
Keep us posted

The tank is clean as a whistle and the carb was not bad either. The top throttle linkage on the carb is very loose though, Ill have to see if someone has a junk one with a good throttle arm.

How would u suggest oiling up the bore? literally putting oil in it?

darkminion_17 02-01-2013 09:19 PM

Not too much a few squirts should do it...

cubfixer 02-01-2013 09:19 PM

I'd take the plug out and spray some PBlaster around the bore as you turn the engine over by hand. Can't hurt!

Most of the time I have found that the spindle get stuck in axle making it not steer. I would try that first.

Yes sir, I think you are correct, the steering wheel turns, I just need to try freeing up the spindles. :beerchug:

Be care as the collared spindles are not easy to find.

I will try my best. I need to go online and find a diagram as this is my first run-in with a collared setup. Obviously they weren't a good idea or they would have kept them and not replaced it with the other system.
