New member looking for an old cub

I have been looking around for an old cub cadet for pushing snow and mowing, I have found a few and need help choosing the best model for my needs. I think I want hydrostatic and I prefer the narrow frame styling. I have found a 105 for $375 and a 109 for $350. They both have blades and mower decks, but the 105' s deck looks rough. Any advice?

Both are fine tractors, my personal preference would be the 109 but that's just me :biggrin2:

The 105 is a narrow frame and the 109 is a wide. They are both equal on their capabilities in my opionion but I've always liked the 105 styling a bit more. And the narrow frame I like more. I would go with the 105 if it were me

:beerchug: welcome to the forum.

Any particulars I should look for looking at these two models?

Welcome to OCC! Either of the cubs will do the tasks you need to do. :beerchug:

Either cub would be a nice one to have. I'm more a wide frame guy (not wide framed guy,:biggrin2:). Wide frames are easier to work on if you need to do any drive shaft maintenance. Pop off the tunnel cover and you're good to go. Narrow frames are a little trickier to get to those pins........

Second the maintenance comment, wide frames get the nod for ease of working on the drive train, hydro/trunion connections and swapping out the hydro release valves.

Having said that, narrow frames are still great lookin' rigs.

I'd pick the 105 cuz I like the narrow frame and the front end design vs the wide frame look of the 109. Harder to work on yes.

cub123 01-04-2013 11:38 AM

Welcome to OCC:beerchug: Both are great tractors, I agree that the wide frames are simpler to work on, but that never stopped me from owning a bunch of narrow frames.:biggrin2:

same here. I have both. love my NF's
but for me a mowing tractor has to be a WF 82 series.
use less fule. less time mowing (runs faster)

my 125 NF would take 1.5gal to mow my yard . and in the 582, the 5gal tank would last all month. also getting it done in half the time of the 125.

it just a cool factor getting it out and mowing with it , (every once and awhile)

Funny, cuz dad's 782 uses more fuel than his 125 mowing.

I second that!:beerchug:

I reckon that the 109 would be the tractor of choice just for fhe fact the mower deck is in better shape. That and the fact the drive line is easier to get at and work on.

cubby102 01-05-2013 10:08 AM

yea my 782 uses about twice what my 123 foes through. But still powers through the taller grass much easier

xbanone 01-05-2013 10:10 AM

The 105 has a IH blade on the front but has what looks to be a home made lift that hinges from the hood hinge with chain and linkage that connect the blade to the lift arm. Is this unusual?

cubby102 01-05-2013 10:14 AM

thats a good lookin 105 as far as the plow setup that's very intresting but looks to have been done so that they didn't modify the tractor itself... I would try offering a little less and see what they say

May as well post the link to to the 109

BIGMOZEKE 01-05-2013 12:35 PM

I like the bigger tractors.........you know bigger is always better....LOL

If I wasn't fortunate enough to own the two Supers, I would definitely have the 582 set up or a 1650, depending on if you want hydro or if manual is okay. I also have a 1200 that is a great tractor.

ALSO..........once you get started down this path, I serioulsy doubt that you will stick with just one. Cuz you know...deal that you can't pass up here or there, parts tractor cheap, friend knows that you like them and drops one off for you.......and on and on and on.

Have fun on your journey, it will be fun and IT IS AN ADDICTION.

4SPEED 01-05-2013 01:56 PM

I guess thats cause my 582 has Big twin 18 B&S in it, its very good on gas. that 682 with the M18 did suck the gas . so Id say you guys are right.

but there again the old ones are just cool . Like my Trans AM's , people say . how can you afford the gas in that Pont 400? its got to suck the fuel.

and I just say with a smile, YES It Does...........

105 looks ready to go

Not sure about that chain to snow blade setup, something made up but if it works that's what counts. Looks like the snow blade on the 105 only needs the lift rod bracket to make it correct. Have fun with whatever one you choose.

Sugarmaker 01-06-2013 12:19 PM

Did you buy one yet? if not. Get both tractors and all the attachments they have too. Both look better than some of the stuff I have drug home. As you get acquainted with them you can decide which one you like best.
Regards,
Chris
