Progress on my 108 rehab
6 Attachment(s)
Making a lot of progress on my 108. Rebuilt steering, drive shaft clutch, PTO clutch, engine (new piston/rings/seals/valves), repainted much of the tractor (rattle cans). Replaced left front wheel spindle and wheel (wouldn't hold a bearing any longer). Replaced seat, decals, (kept original dash tin, though worn, it looks better than a decal would). Still waiting on back ordered (and now lost in the US Mail?) shroud grass screen so I can finish final assembly of the engine (drive cup/drive plate) and install. Have replaced bearings, springs, etc where ever they are used but have not messed with the rear axle or transmission. Brakes were replaced about 10 years ago, and I did buy a NOS mower deck about 7 years ago, so that's in great shape.
Embarrassed that I got a little over spray on the rear tire, but that won't last long. The yellow and white colors don't look right in these pictures, but they are the IH cadet spray paint. Looks fine in person. This is the 108 that I bought used in 1978 or 1979 and has been in service ever since. I also have a 42 inch front blade and a tilt trailer (not shown here of course). Will post a final pic when it's all back together and running. Wanted to thank folks on this site for posting instructions--especially the static timing instructions. Used that yesterday. |
That is a very nice paint job. Were you able to get hardener in your rattle cans for the paint?

Slow down, your making me look bad on my 128 rehab :biggrin2:. All kidding aside, it's looking great. Thanks for the update.

Very nice job, you should be happy with the results.:beerchug:

Finished assembly, added gas, and it started right up in about 2 revolutions. It hasn't started like that in many, many years. I'm going tomorrow to look at a running 149, reportedly with a snow blower and mower deck. We'll see if it comes home with me.

Excellent job on your 108! It looks great!

Thanks for all the kind comments on my 108. It does look great, and it runs so well now. This was my first tractor, purchased shortly after we got married (35 years ago!) and it's cut grass at three different houses since then. So there is definitely an emotional attachment to this little tractor. It has served us so well for so long, asking only for basic maintenance in return. A trusted friend, for sure.
You can't see in the pictures, but I put tail lights on it (wired with the headlights) and a rear "back up" light (switched separately). It had the original reflectors on the fenders before. I didn't spring for the proper cadet lights ($50) but used a pair of the Grote double lamp fixtures. Looks pretty good. The steering is tight again (used to wander back and forth cutting grass, required constant correction), It starts quickly, and runs at "idle" speed as well. It never was able to idle before. A few more adjustments are due. I need to adjust the brakes to take up a little slack. I put the mule drive on it, but am trying to decide whether to put the mower back on or go get the snow blade out of the stable and put that on for another picture. I ran it for a little while today, and will re-torque the head bolts after it cools down. It's been a fun project! Again, thanks for all the support. Now, check out my "new" 149 on the thread "149 Score!." |

Pulled the 108 back into the shop to trick it out. I spent the weekend (and most of today, President's Day) adding a creeper, a 3-point hitch and a spring assist. Don't have any use right now for the 3 point hitch, or the creeper (that's just for fun) but the spring assist is nice to help lift the mower deck. It's about done now, ready to be moved back down to the river house for grass cutting duty this summer.

Looks good!:beerchug:

Super Nice! Great Job!
I love the 108's and 128's. Those and the 100's are my favorites.Wait,I like 102,122,and 71 with fenders too! Maybe I like them all? |
Terrific job, you should be proud.
|
Great job! :beerchug:

Did you have to cut the drive shaft, or did the creeper come with it when you bought it?
By the way, the bracket for the spring assist attaches to the outside of the frame...just to let you know... |
I cut the drive shaft with a cut off wheel on an angle grinder. That way I didn't need to remove it. I have a spare full length driveshaft if I ever want to go back.
Thanks for the tip on the bracket location. Easy enough to move, but not sure what difference it makes? |
I think it has something to do with the application of the coplitiation in relation with the curvature of the earth.
|
That sounds plausible to me.
|
nice job on the creeper were the pins hard to get out where did u get all these options and did u change the wiring for the headlights:biggrin2:
|
I didn't have any problem knocking out the driveshaft pins at the transmission coupler--they've only been in there a couple months since I had it apart for the overhaul. Been gathering parts from all over, CL, ebay, etc.

thats what i was thinking
