'61 Original Restoration
I started tearing down my Original today. I got it completely dismantled and down in the basement so I can work on the parts. I tore into the engine today and started working on the sheet metal and got it degreased. My decals also came today from Maple Hunter Decals. :beerchug:

Cory
I think you have a keeper. I see STD on the top of the piston so at least you know you have room for a freshen if it needs it. This is the guy that used to do my race car engine in Watertown CT (Carlquist competition engines 1-860-274-0742) I know he also does small engines if you need a good machine shop.:beerchug: Mac |
Looks like your off to a great start.Keep those updates coming.

I didn't get too much done today, but I did manage to get some pieces down to bare metal including the dash tower. I spent like an hour scraping the paint off with a metal scraper on the tower, It came off pretty easily considering.... the other items I used a wire wheel.

I scraped down and wire wheeled the frame today. http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps7d143626.jpg http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps9e4d574a.jpg And Made a new wiring harness! It just needs new connectors http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps2ad0785f.jpg |
No worries
In another 50 years, that shaft could wear to the point of needing attention!
:bigthink: John |
John, I totally agree with you, but I am trying to restore it to the best of my ability, the brake/clutch pedal has alot of slop in it when it is in place, just looking to minimize that. :beerchug:
|
You could always build up the shaft with a few beads of weld and belt sand it or draw file it down to size.
|
That is exactly what someone suggested to me! :beerchug: I will give it a try
|
Great progress you're making:beerchug:
Question regarding your wire wheel. What are you using? I've had poor luck finding a "good" wire wheel for my bench grinder, they just don't last very long. I turn them every so often so they don't flatten down, and they also work better with less force once flipped, but they don't seem to go far before the wires start flying out. When I was young, over at our company's shop, they seemed to last much longer, but I suppose like everything today, nothing is built as good as it used to be. Sorry for jumping your thread, but any thoughts? Thanks |
Cory,
Nice progress! Where did you get the braided nylon for your wiring harness? John |
Great job, Cory!

Well I have been using a wire wheel on the bench grinder that my grandfather bought back in the 80's, It still has about an inch of wire left after 30+ years of use, but I decided to get another one. I work at a hardware store, so I just picked up the cheapest 6" wire wheel they had and ran with it, and it seems to be holding up really well. No wires flying off and after probably 2-3 hours of continual use, I still have 6". The brand is Weiler Vortec, Crimped Wire Wheel, Coarse. Quote:
I ordered the nylon from McMasterCarr, http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-ca...eeving/=kok4z7, They have a lot of everything and they ship next day. I ordered the nylon sleeving on Monday night and it arrived Tuesday early afternoon. Thanks everyone for the praise. :beerchug: Here are some pics from tonight progress.... http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...psf8b2ec5c.jpg http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...psf2405b58.jpg http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...psf81874ef.jpg http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...psb6a38fb2.jpg http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps31a1c758.jpg |

Well, I know that a lot of you wanted me to run this thing using the internal coil/magneto... but from the looks of it, it is shot. The casing around it is cracked. I have not tried it, but I doubt it will work.
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...psf39ac5a4.jpg On a plus side, I got my Emblem, Ornament and Oil Bath today! http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps5f93a981.jpg http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...psf62a985e.jpg http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps85af04d7.jpg EDIT: The coil/magneto inside the engine works just fine, plenty of spark. Now I am going to need a wiring diagram for having a electric start with a magneto coil. I am thinking I can just leave off the green wire from the V/R. |
