I bought one of these this spring.
https://m.northerntool.com/northernt...o?itemId=27670 I was gunna go with a miller but was a ble to get the thermal arc for cost through my school. I love it. I use it one mig 99% of the time but somet8mes ill flip it over to stick and burn some 6013s or 7018s. Its a great welder for a beginer or homeowner. Some day id like to step up to a bigger miller with more amps |
All I have is a Lincoln AC225 "Tombstone" stick welder. Make do but wish for more. From what I have read it seams having the DC option would be good.
Would love to have a wire welder. If anyone wants to get me one for Christmas that would be just fine with me:biggrin2: Just let me know and I will send you my address:beerchug: On a serious note, would the DC option really help that much with welding thinner material? |

On a side note, welding is something I've always wanted to learn. I can make "chicken droppings" but I look at these guys who are true fabricators and welders and I'm just in total awe. |

the best way to learn to weld, is go and get yourself a welder. either a Mig, stick or Tig and just run bead after bead after bead. try changing positions, left hand, right hand, left to right, right to left, long arc, short arc, speed up or slow down, drag the rod, make horseshoe motions or circles. youll be surprised by how fast you can pick up a technique that works for you, that will make a weld bead look like a pros. for a beginner a wire fed welder (MIG) is the best to learn on. then go to Stick, then Tig. |
century 110 MIG welder. someday when money aint so tight..... i will upgrade! the one i have now works for most welding that i do. if i need to weld thicker steel i will grind 45's (make it look like a chisel tip) on the ends of the steel to be welded and build it up flush.

Lincoln 225 weldanpower. 1960's vintage with Wisconsin motor Cub6:.

Welders
Lincon 110 volt Mig and just oicked up a Hobart Stickmate AC/DC at Tractor Supply to weld my FEL project Haven't used a stick in years but am getting better penetration with the hotter machine
|
Researched and bought this HTP 110v welder. Welds way beyond what would be expected for a 110 welder. It hasn't let me down in about 10 years.

My old Solar gave up the ship a couple years ago.
Replaced it with a Miller 211 . GREAT little welder! . |

I bought a 90amp welder from harbor freight ( $99.00) & practiced on some junk angle iron, black pipe, & it's paid for itself in the 3 jobs that I had. It's no super duper welder but did the job. I don't ever foresee big welding jobs in my future so it'll do. Bottom line............... If I can learn to do some simple welding & flow a respectable bead----then ANYONE can. I even did a simple welding job for a friend of mine on his cars tow hitch. I was more thrilled than he was. NIK, |
there's a guy that goes to church with me who is a welder/fab for a living. He's done quite a few things for me. He's the kind that goes out and looks at implements and comes back in a couple days and it looks better than the factory one. Maybe one day... haha.
|
got an old deuce n a quarter Lincoln stick. use mostly 6011 or 6013 rods. im not a welder by trade, but i get by.
|
Miller 211 Autoset with the 115/230 switchable plug & the aluminum spool gun. Works awesome for whatever I need. Still learning how to use the spool gun correctly.

Nice rig, Mike. Love the cart. I've got the older version of that Miller that I bought about 10 years ago and love it. When it comes to wire feed machines, I've always preferred Millers.
Back when I welded for a living, I worked at a place that did a lot of fabrication for sewer and water treatment plants which was almost all aluminum work. Those spool guns work nice when everything is going well, but it didn't take much to bird nest that aluminum wire. Maybe they've made some improvements in the last 20 years. Bob |
I've had a Craftsman 240A stick welder for, like 35 years. It's fine, but I don't use it enough to get good at it. Just bought the Harbor Freight 90A wire feed welder discussed here. It's easier to use, but, certainly has limited capacity. I need to take a welding class at the local community college. It's a skill that I would like to improve, but, as always, it takes practice and my primary hobby of woodworking/furniture making, doesn't call for a lot of welding...

litlmikeyl,
What's that COE project hiding in the background. Would make a very cool cub hauler. Love to see some picts of that in one of the off topic threads. |
I went with a Lincoln electric HD feed welder. Model K2188-1
It'll do just about anything around the shop without breaking the bank to do it, and plugs right into house hold current. |
Lincoln m-135. has done everything from 20 gauge sheet on to 3/4'' plate i used to build my 20 ton log splitter. may take 6 passes on 3/4'' but it works. i love the little guy.

I have a Lincoln 180C mig. Great welder!
|
I have a lincoln 225 arc that fell off the back of a truck . it is the older copper coils type and works great . a harbor frt. 151 mig ,I use the most
a 120amp HRB FRT. I bought years ago and use with fluxed wire for moble jobs I also have the $200 TIG inverter unit from HF which I never mastered yet but does weld light steel . without a foot feed or spark start it is tricky to get going -probably need to be 12 to 20 yrs old and chinese- anyone else have it ? :biggrin2: |

It's probably a scratch start. Try scratching the tungsten quickly toward the start of your weld. When you are done welding, flick the arc out quickly. The end of your weld will crater but that's the nature of scratch start |
Yes but kinda hard to do ,I want to improve the ground 1st as that has greatly helped the other HF welders. I bought it mainly to weld 4130 thin tube. It sticks to steel or it is to far away to arc now
|
Also check the way you are grinding your tungsten. You want the grind marks to be vertical so the arc flows down smooth. Grinding marks horizontally will make the arc jumpy and all over the place. I learned that a while back after 3 hours trying to get the welder i have to work. A good ground definitely improves the welding too.
