Running out of odd ball stuff to do so I think I'm gonna try and put an M12 that I have from my 1210 in a 71. I know I'll have to cut the frame for the bigger flywheel but wondered if it will fit otherwise? Also I think I'm going to need a set of fenders and seat support of something like a 122 if any of you guys have some laying around shoot me a PM. Hope to be able to do a gas tank of some sort under the seat. Sandblasted the frame for it yesterday. Attached a couple pics of what I’m working with.

Good luck, Sam. We'll be looking forward to your progress.

Looks like it will be an easy re-power. Set the frame up on the saw horses and put some 3/8" threaded rod in the motor bolt holes and it lines up with the bolt pateren for the old 7HP that the tractor was built with. Gotta notch the frame like a 147, no big deal. Ve Got Der Miller So Ve Gonna Be Makin Der Sparks By Golly :biggrin2:

A couple pics of the, well I don't know what it will be yet. Maybe a little plow tractor. One of those parts from this and parts from that deals.:bigthink:

Great pics, Sam. I'm looking forward to this!

This is what happens when I have too much time on my hands. One thing I need to work out is a gas tank and seat support. Also may do a rear lift on it. Just one of those stupid projects. Clutch is junk. Got a set of disk brakes that I may put on it for turning brakes sort of like the Supers have. So far every bolt came out with no problems except one and the cut off wheel took that off in about 30 seconds. Working on the exhaust elbow now. It's soaking in PB. If I can't get it out it may have an exhaust that comes out through the grill. Kinda want to do a 4" chrome stack on it. :beerchug: |
Looking good! I cant wait to see the final product. A Magnum motor in a narrow frame, should be bad**s!!! :beerchug:
|
Shouldn't this be under the Customized Cub Cadets category?
AJ Mod edited to remove useless banter. |
The Mag is no big deal, just no points to deal with. Just a glorified K301. Just gotta cut the frame to make it fit, sort of like a 147. It’s just going to be a toy.:biggrin2:

I don't see that it belongs in the Mod section but if that's what the powers to be want to do go for it. Mac |
I have seen some fantastic welding done on some super cubs. I mean the pullers, along the lines of the 147 and more! Just wanted to drop in and say that's going to be a nice re-power! Love the NF RF Cubs!:biggrin2:

Just my 2 cents other than the fact that the NF's look cool they are a Royal PITA to work on. Guess I better get off my butt and get to work on it. The Sawzall is calling. :biggrin2: |

Got the frame cut today, engine fit to the frame and the braces about ready to weld in place. Making the braces out of ¼” so I doubt it will bend. I am also going to reinforce the bottom. Replaced all the tie rod ends with some that I salvaged from a 2000 series. Got the exhaust nipple free on the M12, gotta love Power Blaster. Soaked it for a couple days and it came free with no issues. Project is going better than expected so far. :beerchug:

Sam, you could make it like this one. I set up beside this guy at the Hickory Tractor show this summer. He used a 14hp twin Briggs (I think) and had it rigged up with a gas pedal. It ran great and would fly.
Whatever you do I'm sure it will be cool. I'll be watching the progress. |

I know I could put just about anything in it but this is one of those take all the spare parts I have and make something out of it projects. Take one 71 roller and one M12 and Houston we have lift off LOL:biggrin2: This is what I had to work with. You have heard of low budget, well this is no budget. :beerchug: |

And yea, I know all to well about "no budget":biggrin2: I'll make a bet with you, how about a 6 pack, that when you get the motor mounted and start looking at it a light bulb in you head will turn on and the budget will begin:beerchug: |

Got the frame welded up today and put the engine, trans, front axle and drive shaft in just to see how everything fits and lines up. Looks like everything is good. Gotta get a new drive shaft the old one is out of round and the clutch needs new springs and a TO bearing. Looks like the Junk yard Dog will live to ride again. :biggrin2:
|
Looking good!:beerchug:

It's coming together nicely, Sam.
|
Nice work, looks great!!
|
That's way cool Sam.
|
Still have 4 more gussets to weld in and then I have to figure out how to do the turning brakes for it. It has the internal brake but I have a set of axles with the disk brakes and a set of calipers for it. Also thinking about building a rear lift for it. Stay tuned.

Looks good Sam!

Great project Sam! :beerchug:

Looks great Sam!

Did you have any issues setting the motor in and lining it up with the clutch? It looks like the bearing plate is close to the existing part of the frame. On my 147 with a geared transaxle the cutout is wicked tight so trying to line up the three pin driver with the clutch is a pain. Not a big deal if you don't have to pull the engine that often though.
|
The bolt pattern on the M12 is the same as what was in it but the M12 has the deep sump so I had to do a little cutting to make it fit. Only issue is that the engine has to go in straight down so it won't slide forward to get the clutch in. The clutch has to go in first then the engine and then the trans has to be slid forward.

Finished the welding on the frame. Cleaned the rear end and pulled the axles. It's getting a set of disk brake axles. Ordered a complete clutch from Mid West Super Cub and a set of seals for the axles from the local Cub dealer. So far so good.

Looking good Sam!
|
well its quite a work by now! I gotta roll with the 72 sometime.
|
Pulled the steering box apart today. Just needed a good cleaning and refill with new grease. Lucked out on that anyway. No pics, figure you guys know what a steering box looks like. :biggrin2:
|
LOL Sam! Thanks for keeping us posted.
|
:beerchug: heckof a job so far. Im thinking of doing the same to a NF I have. build a wild looking show cruser, but need 2 frames to do what Im thinking about.
|
4speed can't wait to see the NF with the Chevy small block in it. :biggrin2:
