Wide Frame "148" restore
3 Attachment(s)
Ok guys here it goes. This is my first rebuild on any of my tractors as I like them original as much as possible. With that being said I did some horse trading to LiamD for a 128 w/no motor for a complete 124. I wanted a gear drive to put a k321 in for plowing and field work. Hence the name "148". The tractor had lots of problems from the PO. before LiamD.This is the first pic I got before the trac. was completely torn apart.

Taking it down to the frame is a great way to fix all the PO mods.:beerchug: Looking forward to your progress and updates!

Here are some pics after the sandblasting
Attachment 29029 Sorry I didn't get any of the hood. Although EVERYTHING was sandblasted outside or in the blasting cab. |
Looks like a cool project! I always wondered why they never made a gear drive 14 HP. I'm going to be following this thread, thinking a 146 would be cool:bigthink:

The fenders and the hood had alot of rust pitting and I spent alot of time finish sanding them to get rid of it.

Next I tackled the dashboard. This is what I started with. It came out pretty good considering it took 3 attempts to get it right.

Here is one of the problems it had. The input shaft was badly worn, so it had to be replaced before I put the creeper on. Next was getting the little stuff painted.Attachment 29039

Looks great! That input pulley is pretty bad.

Why is your hood-BLACK?
Did you use a rust reformer? Or is your primer black?:bigthink: Nik, |
Looks white to me, it's just the lighting (or lack thereof) in his shop.
|
its white just cant see it.

you can fix them by putting a Bronze "pin" in the hole, and weld the worn spot |
Nikster, the hood and grill shell are painted case IH white, it's just the light. Tractordude, I went ahead and relaced it with a good used one. Talk about a seal that is hard to find and when you do it is so expensive.

Next came the fender pan and rearend to be painted. Boy did it take alot of paint. Quart and a half of mixed paint and this. If only I could keep those d#@& bugs out of the paint.Attachment 29069

Nice work! You sure do work fast! How was it working with the fiberglass? Pain in the backside? I've heard it's not the easiest medium to work with. Can't wait to see the finished product. Keep the pics a comin'. :beerchug:

red56turbo, all I can say is don't buy the cheap stuff from wally world. I was in a hurry and it did not set up. What a mess:bash2:. I have had experience in fiberglass, but that was a long time ago. It took me 3 trys to get it right. Wax paper, sheet cardboard and maybe some sheet metal as a form and just go for it. Just get the good resin and you'll be set. Acetone and 80 grit the dash and you will be good.

Next came the creeper and clutch for rebuild. The clutch was rebuilt to stock specs with all new springs, trued pressure plates and all new tension pins. The creeper was a different story. The PO had welded the shift rod to the fork and it was difficult to "Wittle" away the weld just enough to get it out but not destroy it. All seals, planet gears and O-rings were replaced. I never realized that going from a narrow frame to a wide frame that I would have so much trouble with handle.

Now that the drivetrain is all repainted it was time to put it back together. This is where it all started.
Attachment 29114 Next came the engine after it was painted. Will need to rebuild later when funds allow. Attachment 29115 The rearend is installed. Attachment 29117 |
Very nice work! :beerchug: Bet that thing will be a beast when it's finished.

Well the tractor is done. Bought the stickers from Maple Hunter and the lady there was a big help with questions. I am waiting on a sleeve hitch and I am going to make this an electic lift with a linear actuator, just like they did from the factory. I am laid up right now for foot surgery, so I can't even get to enjoy the "NEW" tractor.:Sad:The tractor runs great, but engine is still original and will need a rebuild in near future.(smokes on start up, but clears up when warm)
Attachment 29295 I was even able to get the stickers to say "148". Had to get the 128 stickers and insert the 4 out of a 149 set. Came out great.:beerchug: Attachment 29298 Attachment 29301 |
