582 command swap

Well I'm finally getting around to swapping a Command into my 582. I picked up this decent 582 a while back the 16hp Briggs still ran good, but I have really wanted to do a Command swap into one of these for a while. I plan on using this tractor for tilling, mowing, and plowing so I will still need to use the stock size front PTO and will need to run a creeper gear on it. I am currently in the mock up stages but have found that the front PTO off of an 1811 will fit the command engine (the engine I am using is out of a 2185 the mock up engine that is in the tractor is out of an 1864 pretty much the same engine but different exhaust).

The first thing I wanted to tackle on this project was the wiring. Since the briggs uses an ignition system similar to the command (no points) the wiring was the easiest part so far I used the wiring diagrams from both tractors and it was really pretty simple. I did have to cut the harness on the 582 open to move some wires that ran to the solenoid and battery at the back to the starter solenoid at the engine now. I will get some pictures posted as soon as I get everything soldered together.

The next project was the engine spacing. Since I need to run a front PTO the PTO needs to be mounted in the same location as the old so you will have to make some sort of clutch driver spacer I used two command clutch spacers/hubs and a clutch driver, all parts were from Lakota racing but I did have to have 3/16" machined off of one of the spacers to get everything where it needs to be. On the engine plate I just moved the rear bolt holes 3/4" forward of the two rear slots. If you have any questions let me know

I had a little time this weekend to get the rear axle out, get it cleaned up and got the creeper mounted on it. I am also replacing the aluminum rear axle tubes with a set of cast iron ones.

Thanks guys I still have a couple of things to work out on this, one is the throttle and choke cables (im going to need some longer ones) and the other is the exhaust I could run the stock 1864 muffler but would really like to build a custom 2 into 1 header and exhaust stack exiting out of the right side but I dont want it to be too loud so I was thinking maybe a harley drag pipe baffle of some sort. More pictures and info to come. Wally

I have a 582 that I am considering installing a M18 to use just as a plow and trailer hauling machine. Will be interested to see your progress and your challenges with this changeover. Joe |

Joe, Swapping a mag into a 582 would be super easy I had a kt17 (pretty much the same basic engine) in my other 582 that I ended up parting out I just used a clutch driver and ball bushing plate off of an 1806 the stock drive shaft and everything else worked perfect it was a bolt in install no modifications. I used the wiring harness out of the 682 that I pulled the kt17 from. The only thing you will have to modify on yours is the wiring you will also have to use the .469 spacers between the engine and mounting plate you can still get these new from cub.
Sam, I think I am going to leave this one stock for now but I have another ch18 I would like to get some extra power out of and swap into my 2072 maybe later this winter. |
I also did the command 18 swap in my 682 and added full hydraulics. Those command motors run real nice and have a real sweet sound to them with dual exhaust set up.

Thanks for the info Wally. Did not know about the spacers and I will have to scrounge up some kind of wiring harness as there isn't one in the 582 now. I actually have the shaft coupler piece you mentioned off of a 1806 so that will work perfectly. Working on the grandson's 1200 puller for now so the 582 project will have to wait a bit.

Hey Matt that exhaust is pretty loud I might have to go with the stock style muffler for now. No new updates as of now I have been working on trying to get my house washed and painted. My luck would take the only week off of work this summer to get this done where there is rain in the forcast almost every day.:bash2:

I finally had a chance to get some more done on this project this week. as of right now ive had it running and driving but pulled the muffler off to modify and paint it. I dont have any pictures of it all together but I do have some more detailed picks of the motor plate and the clutch driver spacers. The spacer thats closest to the flywheel I had 3/16" cut off one side so it would pilot into the back side of the other spacer so every thing centers up. On the motor plate all I had to do was move the rear bolt holes 3/4" forward of the rear slots and then drilled to new front ones.

When I put the command in Dannys 482 with a 124 rear, all I had to do was put the drive couplier in from MWSC and get a longer clutch arm.

No I dont use the super or the other 82's to mow with. I will run pumps off them.

Well after some mowing with this thing I realized these command engines run hotter than the mags do. I couldnt even touch the hood it was so hot so that got me thinking about a better flowing exhaust system to expell the heat a little better. This is what I came up with 1.125" head pipes 3.5" exhaust tubing and a single 1.5" outlet I also welded some baffles inside of the exhaust tubing to help quiet it down. Everything worked out rather well its quite a bit louder than stock style muffler but not deafening it also flows much better I can now touch the hood without burning my hand. I still have a little work to do on my heat shield. Wally

You still need a shroud to enclose the muffler and direct all of the cooling air over the muffler and out the front grille. The Commands run no hotter than the magnums or KTs.

Did you do anything between the fire wall and air inlet for the blower housing? If not you should otherwise you will be recirculating hot air. On the 1882 I repowered with a CH22 I cut the flange out of the fire wall for a 2000 series and riveted it to the factory fire wall and then used some of the bellows from the 2000 series to seal it up. It has worked well.

The back fire wall does have a flange that fits pretty close to the back side of the blower housing with in an 1/8 th of an inch but the bottom is pretty open one thing I have noticed is on this engine is it doesnt seem to move as much air out of the front of the tractor as the mag engines I have run. This engine runs great and has great power I havent heard any spark knock or detonation while running under a load. I dont think its over heating it just seems to run hotter than the mag engines Im used to. I used to have an 1811 that I ran for part of the summer without the exhaust shields because it was missing them when I got it and it didnt seem to get as hot as this one does. but i did notice the hood was cooler once I did get them installed. I will get my muffler shield finished but it does seem to be much better since the new exhaust I made.

You need to get that air moving over the muffler for sure.
