May buy a 149

Hello to all. Found this forum a few days ago and have been reading some of the good info that you all share. Have a chance to buy a rough 149 for $100.00. The bad : tractor will not move. It broke down while Owner was mowing. Owner says motor runs fine. I turned the drive shaft by hand and it seems to not be connecting to the motor. I can see the shaft turning toward the motor, it goes into a metal round piece and it does not turn. Something serious possibly? Also has no battery. He took it out and put it in his other mower. Looks like orig. muffler and rusted pretty bad. Can you still buy parts for a tractor this old? I am retired and am wanting it to tink with and if I get it operating, will use to mow my yard. Mowing deck is in fair shape. Any and all advise and opinions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you've already found the trouble with a broken spiral pin that goes in the drive shaft and links the drive cup from the motor to the shaft. All kinds of folks have parts for these things and for that price you best go get it before someone else does! The parts to fix could be as cheap as 5 bucks and 30 to 60 min depending on your abilities. Good luck and we want pics once you get it

Bob :Welcome2: I agree, it sounds like a broken spiral pin, easy fix. We would love to see some pictures of the 149,that's a great first cub.

For $100 buy it. If you can fix it cheap all good if not part it out and make a few bucks. :biggrin2:

What they said sounds right to me also - but they would know better than I. My real contribution here is: :Welcome2:

You might as well figure $100 for this one and $200 for the other 2 your going to buy for parts.:beerchug:

Diz Jr. 08-13-2012 10:25 PM

For that price, Buy it.
That's what i paid for my 149 several years ago.
There were a lot of little things to fix from the previous owners neglect, but it has been a great dependable tractor.

:Welcome2: Looking forward to the pics of your 149.

The pin that goes into the drive cup isn't a spiral pin. It's a hardened solid pin. But it sounds like that's your problem. It's a pretty easy fix

This is correct. it is a dow pin and not a spirol pin. There is a good chance that the coupler is worn causing the pin to break but for $100 you can splurge and buy a new coupler too.

The 149 is my Favorite

Mr. Bob,

The 149 is my favorite Cub. Everyone has their model preference for various reasons - regardless, they are all tough little tractors. You can't go wrong for $100. Let me put it this way - if you dont want it, I'd buy it; site unseen.

I found a basket case 149 that sat for years - these things are never to far gone to fix and restore. I completly went through mine for about $2,500.

This video is a quick look at my 149 restoration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwBpD...=ULeDR844tcRLE

The 14hp Kohler is a tough engine - easy to work on. You'll find all the manuals right here on this site. Check out the sponsors for parts. Write me - I have plenty of sources. This video is my engine start after a $250 overhaul:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hiun0...hannel&list=UL

After restoration I put mine to work - and they do alot more than just mow!
check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9ocCWT70wk

You'll find we're all pretty proud of our cubs here on this site. Their awesome little machines. The only caution I would give someone new is this: Its hard to stop at just one! Welcome

BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT!! 100 dollars is a great deal, and by the sounds of the symptoms of it's failure to move, it'll be a relatively cheap fix.

Thanks for the warm welcome and to the many replies. Going back this evening if my friend and his truck are available. Will be hard to load as the mower deck is on the ground and no hydraulics to lift it. May be able to take the deck off if I can figure out how it hooks. Tractor has not had good maintenance. I checked the oil and it was coal black. Also a hydraulic line is unhooked going in to the pump. Guess where some one was checking for fluid. Thanks again for all the replies and have a great day.

Looked at your videos. Looks like you do excellent work restoring tractors. I could never do as well. Too Old and too few resources and knowledge. If I do get the tractor, don't know how to post pictures but maybe some one could tell me how. I am sure I will have a lot of questions after I start working on it. Have a great day.

you know that's right sorry bob for the wrong info... my 149 does have the solid pin and my 1200 has spiral pins, hate to derail but anyone know the reason for that?

Also bob you will find that the deck is pretty easy to disconnect it's just 2 u shaped handles on each side just in front of the rear tires that pull out and twist to keep them out and the deck will then come down then just roll it forward off of the front hangers! All left to do is disconnect the belt and MUSCLE it out :)

don't forget the camera and hope you get lucky and it's still there!!

I paid $260 for my 149 that would run, but wouldn't drive. I replaced the hydro fluid and filter and it was fine. I also replaced that drive pin after it broke. Most work on these old machines is pretty easy.

johncub7172 08-14-2012 05:34 PM

Wheelweights can put up a short life on the pins too, if it once had them. Well,... Mr.Bob, if the motor runs and the S/G is good, you realy cant go wrong for a 100 bucks.

With a die hard group of IH Cub Cadet loyalists here at OCC, you will have just about all the help you need to get the 149 back up and running. You already know they just dont "mak'em like they use to" .

Welcome to OCC!:biggrin2:

Went to pay the man for the tractor and he backed out of the deal. Said that he was retiring next summer and wanted to keep it to have something to work on. What a bummer. Will have to keep looking. I really wanted that tractor.

What a Bummer. I'm sorry you didn't get it. Keep looking and you will find another one.

ACecil 08-14-2012 11:08 PM

Sorry to hear that. The right cub will come your way.

He may have found our keen little site and read this thread and realized how easy it would be to fix. I am partial to the 126 but then it's my first cub, I have to say the 107 I have iis a great machine as well but I prefer the 3 speed over the hydro. It just seems to have more giddy up to me. Just my :TwoCents: Being you are in WV you may want to look into Ohio or Pa both states tend to have cubs up for sale all the time, perhaps not to far of a drive, and they will fit in a small uhaul trailer, a little rough getting them in because of tight quarters. Good luck and :Welcome2:
