1450 Governor

Hey all.
I picked up up a 1450 last year in pretty good shape but in need of some TLC.
I haven't really done anything other than a little tuneup and run it.

Anyway, my I was cutting with it the other day when it started revving up too high. The only way I was able to maintain a reasonable RPM was to use 1/4 throttle.

Any thoughts?

thanks

:Welcome2:

Sounds like the gov needs to be reset, or it's broken.

Here's a link to the service manual

And the link to the owners manual

well, nothing seems loose, and I have not made any adjustments, so
I am going to assume something is broken at this point.
A governor is one of the things I have never gone into, guess that will change pretty soon.

I've got the same problem on my 1450. I honestly haven't had time to deal with it and have controlled the RPMs with the throttle over the last several uses. You will find a serious loss of power when going up hills or using the PTO with this method and obviously the governor needs to be repaired and I suspect the flyweights are shot. Unfortunately the manual only explains how to adjust it but not how to repair it (I assume it involves removing the head, but I'm not a real mechanic!).

I have never had problems with flyweights,

but, I am a big guy!!

:biggrin2:

Couldn't resist!! I guess I need a :Slap:

Unfortunately, the governor is one of the first parts put into the engine during assembly.

yeah, I hadn't investigated it much further but figured that would be the case. Oh well, it is burning a little oil so I might as well go through it while I am at it, and replace the iso biscuits, and weld the cradle while it is out.

Is there any potential for the governor to catastrophically self destruct if I run it carefully?

There is a chance to come apart or have a broken part get in a place where it shouldn't be.:TwoCents:

If the governor suddenly stopped working, it's very likely there's already pieces floating around in there, so I would not run it anymore until you fix it.

found the problem.
the paddle broke off of the governor shaft
never would have thought that would happen, but shows anything is possible.

Glad you got it fixed!

vargafarm 03-31-2013 08:25 PM

not fixed yet
just tore it down this week and took the block to the machine shop
cylinder is already .015 + over stock, so .030 here we come.
crank is round, but already .010 under.

Will see how it shakes out this week, hunting down the parts.

ACecil 03-31-2013 11:08 PM

Sorry about that. Good luck with your engine.

Now is the time to take a look at the governor and see how it works. You'll have it fixed up good now.

Nothing like knowing you have a fresh rebuild under the hood of a already good looking cub! Glad to hear that your getting it done right rather than just slapping a set of rings in it. Fix it right and it'll last you well into the next decade.

Your local cub dealer or any authorized Kohler dealer can get it for you.
